When the ABS light stays on in a 2020-2023 Hyundai Palisade, the anti-lock control module has found a fault and switched ABS off, but your normal hydraulic brakes still work. On most Palisades the cause is a wheel speed sensor, its wiring or connector, or the tone ring it reads, and a scan tool with live wheel-speed data will point to the corner at fault. If the red brake light comes on together with the ABS light, treat it as more serious and have the vehicle checked right away.

What the ABS Light Means on a Palisade

Hyundai's owner's manual for the Palisade (LX2) says the ABS warning light comes on for about 3 seconds when you switch the ignition to ON, then goes out. That is the system checking itself. If it stays on, or comes on while driving, the module has logged a malfunction. The manual is clear that the hydraulic braking system still works when ABS is down; what you lose is the anti-lock function that lets you steer while braking hard on a slippery road.

The ABS light rarely travels alone. The same module runs Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), so you will often see these lights in combination:

Lights on What it usually means How urgent
ABS only ABS disabled, normal brakes working. Usually a sensor or wiring fault. Drive gently, diagnose soon.
ABS plus ESC (and sometimes EPB) The shared module has shut down stability control as well. The manual notes the EPB light can come on with the ESC light without an actual parking brake fault. Diagnose soon; no stability control on slick roads.
ABS plus red Parking Brake and Brake Fluid light Hyundai says the ABS and regular brake system may not work normally. EBD, which balances front-to-rear pressure, may be affected, or fluid may be low. Avoid high speed and hard braking; get it inspected as soon as possible.

A blinking ESC light is different: the manual says it flashes while ESC is actively working, which is normal on a slippery road.

Most Common Causes

1. Wheel speed sensor or its wiring

Each wheel has a sensor that reads a toothed or magnetic tone ring as the hub turns. Delphi lists broken wiring or sensor windings from vibration, internal short circuits, and contamination or damage to the ring as the usual failure modes, and notes the ABS light is normally the first sign. Brake and Front End's diagnostic guide adds that most wheel speed sensor faults turn out to be broken wires or corroded connectors rather than a dead sensor. On a three-row SUV that sees salt, the harness running along the knuckle and the connector at the inner fender are the first places to look.

2. Tone ring or wheel bearing problems

The sensor has to sit a small, precise distance from the ring. A cracked or rusted ring, metallic debris stuck to a magnetic encoder, or a wheel bearing with play that lets the ring wobble will all give the module an erratic signal. Delphi specifically calls out increased bearing clearance as a cause. If one corner also hums or growls at speed, suspect the hub bearing before the sensor.

3. Brake work that disturbed a sensor

An ABS light that appears right after a pad or rotor job is common on any vehicle. A sensor lead pulled tight when the caliper was hung, a connector knocked loose, or a sensor tip chipped while the knuckle was being cleaned is enough. Check that corner first.

4. Low brake fluid

The manual says the red Parking Brake and Brake Fluid light comes on when the reservoir level is low. Fluid drops as pads wear, so a low level can simply mean worn pads, but it can also mean a leak. Hyundai's instruction is to stop somewhere safe, check the level with the engine off, add the fluid type specified in your owner's manual, and not drive the vehicle if there is a leak or the light will not go out.

5. Mismatched tires or low battery voltage

The module compares all four wheel speeds, so a spare or a replacement tire of a different size can make one wheel look like it is slipping. Weak battery voltage during cranking can also set stored codes across several modules at once. Neither needs brake parts, which is why reading the codes comes before buying anything.

Palisade Recalls Worth Checking

NHTSA's recall data does not show an ABS module or wheel speed sensor recall for the 2020-2023 Palisade, but two brake recalls matter if warning lights or brake feel are part of your complaint:

  • 21V840000 (certain 2021 Palisades, Hyundai recall 212): contaminated brake fluid can swell the master cylinder's inner-cup seals and reduce braking performance. Dealers replace the master cylinder and flush the fluid free of charge.
  • 23V415000 (certain 2023 Palisades, Hyundai recall 245): the brake booster diaphragm can become misaligned and cause an internal vacuum leak, leading to a loss of power assist. Dealers inspect and replace the booster as necessary, free of charge.

Run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before paying for brake hydraulic work. A hard pedal from the booster issue will not normally turn on the ABS light by itself, but it is the kind of problem that gets mixed up with an ABS complaint.

How to Diagnose It

  1. Read the codes. A basic engine code reader will not see ABS codes; you need a scan tool that reads the ABS/ESC module. The code will usually name a specific wheel and whether the signal is missing, erratic or out of range.
  2. Compare live wheel speeds. Brake and Front End recommends driving in a straight line at roughly 12 to 25 mph while watching all four wheel speeds. The wheel that drops out or jumps around is your problem corner.
  3. Check the bearing. With the wheel off the ground, rock it top to bottom. Play or roughness points to the hub, which carries or drives the ring the sensor reads.
  4. Inspect the sensor, ring and wiring. Look for chafed insulation, a cracked connector, corrosion at the pins, and debris on the sensor tip. Delphi suggests cleaning contaminated surfaces before condemning the part.
  5. Test before replacing. A multimeter or scope check on the circuit confirms whether the sensor, the wiring or the module is at fault.
  6. Clear codes and road test. The light should stay off through a drive that brings all four wheels up to speed.

The Fix and What to Replace Together

Most Palisade ABS lights end with one of three repairs: a wheel speed sensor, a repaired or replaced harness section, or a hub assembly. A sensor is usually a single bolt and a connector, though a rusted sensor may need penetrating oil and patience to come out without breaking. A hub job is a bigger task and is worth a torque wrench and the factory service manual's specs.

Because you will already have the wheel off, check the brakes at that corner. If pads are close to the wear limit, replace them as an axle set; our 2020-2023 Palisade and Telluride front ceramic brake pads are a direct fit. Scored or worn rotors should be replaced in pairs as well, from our brake rotors, and fresh clips and pins from our brake hardware kits keep new pads from dragging. If the fluid is dark or the level was low because of a leak, fix the leak and flush the system. You can browse everything else in all brake parts.

After any brake work, route the sensor lead exactly as it came from the factory, clipped into its brackets, so suspension travel cannot stretch it.

How Hard Is This Job?

Reading codes and inspecting the wiring is within reach of most owners with a capable scan tool. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is a moderate driveway job. A hub bearing is harder and needs proper torque values. Anything involving the ABS module itself, a master cylinder or a booster, or both the ABS and red brake lights at once, belongs with a shop or dealer, and any open recall is done free at a Hyundai dealer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive a Palisade with the ABS light on?

Hyundai says normal hydraulic braking still works when ABS is down, so you can usually drive it carefully to get it repaired. Leave more following distance and brake gently on wet or icy roads. If the red brake light is also on, avoid high speed and hard braking and have it inspected as soon as possible.

Why did the ABS and ESC lights come on at the same time?

ABS and stability control share wheel speed data and the same control module. When the module loses a wheel speed signal it shuts both down, so both lights come on. The EPB light may join them without any parking brake fault.

Can new brake pads or rotors turn on the ABS light?

The parts themselves do not, but the job can. A sensor wire stretched or pinched while the caliper was off, or a connector left unplugged, is a very common cause of an ABS light right after a brake job.

Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?

If the fault is still present, the light will come back on the next drive once the module runs its self-check. Find and fix the cause, then clear the codes with a scan tool.

Is there an ABS recall on the 2020-2023 Palisade?

NHTSA lists no ABS module or wheel speed sensor recall for these years. There are brake recalls for certain 2021 models (brake fluid and master cylinder) and certain 2023 models (brake booster), so check your VIN.
