How to replace brake rotors on a Nissan Armada, step by step

  1. Break the lug nuts loose on the ground. Full-size lugs are tight; you want the tire's grip helping you.
  2. Lift the vehicle and set it on jack stands at a rated lift point, with the remaining wheels chocked. On a vehicle this heavy the stands are not a formality.
  3. Remove the wheel and lay it flat under the frame rail as an additional safety catch.
  4. Unbolt the caliper and hang it from a sturdy hook. An Armada caliper is heavy enough to damage a brake hose quickly if it is left dangling - support it properly.
  5. Retract the piston with a C-clamp or piston tool so the caliper will fit over the new pads and rotor.
  6. Unbolt the caliper bracket from the knuckle. Expect to need the breaker bar here. Keep a hand on the bracket as the second bolt clears.

  11. Refit the wheel and torque the lugs in a star pattern, lower the vehicle, and re-check the pattern.
  12. Pump the pedal until firm before the vehicle moves an inch.

Getting a rust-seized rotor off an Armada hub

Once the retaining screw is out, only corrosion is holding the rotor on - but on a heavy SUV that has seen salt, that bond is serious. Soak the joint where the rotor hat meets the hub with penetrating oil and give it real time to wick in. Then work around the hat with a dead-blow mallet, rotating the rotor a few degrees between strikes so the shock spreads around the joint instead of concentrating in one arc. Keep every blow off the friction surfaces.

If the rotor has the two threaded jacking holes most designs include, use them instead. Thread in bolts and turn them evenly, a fraction of a turn at a time, and the rotor presses itself straight off the hub. The Armada uses large, heavy rotors - be ready for the weight, because when the rust lets go the rotor comes free instantly and lands on whatever is under it.

Hub prep decides whether you do this job again

Rust or debris trapped under the rotor hat holds the rotor slightly out of square with the hub. The resulting runout wipes the pads unevenly across each rotation, builds uneven friction deposits, and turns into thickness variation. That is what almost every pulsating brake pedal actually is - not a warped rotor. Take the hub to bare, shiny metal, then apply a light film of anti-seize to the hub face only, well clear of the braking surface, so the next rotor comes off without a fight.

Bed the new brakes in

A new rotor and pad set has to be heat-cycled deliberately so friction material transfers evenly across the whole rotor face. Follow the bedding procedure published by your pad manufacturer, usually a series of firm stops from moderate speed with cooling time between them, and avoid holding the pedal at a stoplight while everything is still hot. On a vehicle that tows, do the bed-in before you hook up a trailer, not after.
