2019-2023 Honda Passport ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

ABS warning light causes on the 2019-2023 Honda Passport

When the ABS light comes on in a 2019-2023 Honda Passport, the SUV still stops normally, but the anti-lock function is switched off until the fault is found and repaired. The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor problem at one corner - a failed sensor, a dirty sensor tip, a corroded connector, or a chafed harness - usually with the VSA light on at the same time. A code scan tells you which wheel to look at before you buy anything.

What the ABS Light Means on a Honda Passport

Honda's own Passport dashboard guide describes the ABS indicator plainly: there is a problem with the anti-lock brake system, and the vehicle still has normal braking ability but no anti-lock function. Like the other warning lamps, it should come on briefly at start-up and then go out. If it stays on while driving, the ABS control unit has logged a fault and shut the system down.

The Passport's anti-lock brakes, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA), traction control and hill start assist all depend on the same four wheel speed signals. That is why a single bad signal rarely lights just one lamp. Honda's guide says the VSA indicator means there is a problem with the VSA or hill start assist system, and it is normal to see ABS and VSA come on together from one wheel speed fault. On AWD models, the AWD system also uses wheel speed data, so an AWD warning can appear alongside them.

One lamp deserves more urgency than the rest: the red brake system indicator. Honda says that if it comes on while driving, press the brake pedal lightly to check pedal pressure; if the pedal feels normal, check the brake fluid level when you stop, and if it feels abnormal, take immediate action and have the vehicle repaired immediately. ABS alone is an inspect-soon warning. ABS plus the red brake light, or any change in pedal feel, is a stop-driving warning.

Common Causes, Most Likely First

Cause What you typically notice Usual fix
Failed wheel speed sensor ABS and VSA on together, code points to one wheel, light returns right after clearing Replace that sensor
Debris or rust on the sensor tip or tone ring Light comes on at low speed or intermittently, often after brake work Remove, clean and reinstall the sensor; inspect the ring
Damaged or corroded connector or harness Intermittent light, open or short circuit code, worse in wet or salty weather Repair the harness or connector
Worn hub bearing with a built-in encoder Growl or hum that changes with speed, plus a wheel speed code on that corner Replace the hub bearing assembly
Low brake fluid or a brake hydraulic fault Red brake light alongside ABS, low or soft pedal Find the leak or worn pads, then correct the fluid
ABS/VSA modulator or control unit fault Internal module or pump motor codes, sensor checks pass Dealer-level diagnosis; a replacement unit must be set up with a scan tool

Wheel speed sensors live right next to the brakes, which is the root of most ABS lights on this SUV. The trade publication Brake and Front End points out that magnetic sensors attract metallic debris from brake linings and rotors, and that buildup on the tip can set a fault code even when the sensor itself is fine. It also lists an excessive air gap, internal sensor resistance and loose or corroded connectors as the usual reasons for a weak or erratic signal, and notes that even small nicks on the tone ring can disrupt it.

How to Diagnose It Without Guessing

  1. Look at the other lamps first. If the red brake light is on, or the pedal is soft or low, stop and check brake fluid and pad wear before anything else.
  2. Scan for codes with a tool that reads ABS/VSA. A basic engine-code reader will not see chassis codes. A wheel speed code names a specific corner, which cuts the job down to one wheel.
  3. Watch live wheel speed data. On a slow, straight drive all four readings should track together. A wheel that reads zero, drops out, or jumps around is the problem corner.
  4. Inspect that corner. Check the sensor tip for packed rust or brake dust, follow the harness for rubbed-through insulation near the suspension, and check the connector for green corrosion or a broken lock tab.
  5. Check the bearing. Raise the corner and feel for play or roughness when you spin the wheel. A noisy bearing with a wheel speed code on the same corner usually means the hub, not the sensor.
  6. Clear codes and road test. If the light returns immediately, the fault is still present. If it returns only after a long drive or in the rain, suspect wiring.

Brake and Front End notes that sensor resistance and signal specs vary widely between vehicles, so use the values in the factory service information for your Passport rather than a generic number from another make.

Brake Work and the ABS Light

A lot of ABS lights show up right after a brake job. The wheel speed sensor and its wiring sit inches from the caliper and knuckle, so the harness can get stretched, pinched or unclipped when the caliper is moved. A rusty sensor that is pried on carelessly can crack. Tone rings and hub encoders can also be nicked while a seized rotor is being knocked free.

Good practice when you do brakes on a Passport:

  • Support the caliper with a hook so it never hangs on the brake hose or sensor wiring.
  • Note where every harness clip goes and put it back in the same place.
  • Keep brake dust and metal shavings away from the sensor tip.
  • After the job, confirm the ABS and VSA lights go out at start-up and stay out on the test drive.

If your Passport is due for pads and rotors anyway, a complete 2019-2023 Honda Passport front and rear brake kit puts fresh pads and rotors on both axles in one visit. You can also shop brake pads and brake rotors separately, or add a brake hardware kit so the new pads slide freely in the brackets.

Check the Rear Subframe Recall Too

The rear wheel speed sensor harness runs along the rear suspension, and that area is the subject of a 2026 safety recall. NHTSA campaign 26V365 covers 2019-2023 Honda Passport vehicles sold in a list of salt-belt states plus the District of Columbia, including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Illinois. According to NHTSA's acknowledgment letter, the rear subframe may corrode at the suspension mounting points, which can result in rear suspension component failure such as the rear control arm. Dealers will inspect the subframe and install a reinforcement kit, repairing or replacing components as needed, free of charge.

This is not an ABS recall, but if you are under the rear of a salt-belt Passport chasing a wheel speed fault and you see heavy rust at the subframe, run your VIN on nhtsa.gov and get the recall done at the same time.

How Hard Is the Repair?

Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually one of the easier chassis jobs: remove the wheel, unclip the harness, unplug the connector, remove the mounting bolt and swap the sensor. The hard part on older salt-belt vehicles is a sensor rusted into its bore, which can break on removal. A hub bearing replacement is a bigger job that requires the brakes to come off. A modulator or ABS/VSA control unit replacement is dealer-level work because the new unit has to be set up and checked with a scan tool before it will work correctly. Whatever you replace, torque fasteners to the values in the factory service manual.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive a Honda Passport with the ABS light on?

Honda says the vehicle keeps normal braking ability but loses the anti-lock function, so wheels can lock in a hard stop on wet or icy roads. Drive gently and get it checked soon. If the red brake light is also on or the pedal feels different, stop driving and have it repaired first.

Why are the ABS and VSA lights on at the same time?

Both systems rely on the same wheel speed signals. One bad sensor or wire disables both, so seeing them together usually points to a single wheel speed fault rather than two separate problems.

Can new brake pads or rotors cause the ABS light?

The parts themselves do not, but the job can. A pinched or unclipped sensor harness, a cracked sensor, or debris on the sensor tip after a brake job are all common causes. Recheck that corner's sensor and wiring first.

Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?

It might go out briefly, but if the fault is still present the system will detect it again and relight the lamp. Find and fix the cause, then clear codes with a scan tool.

Does the 2026 rear subframe recall fix ABS problems?

No. Campaign 26V365 addresses corrosion at the rear subframe suspension mounting points. It is still worth checking your VIN if your Passport was sold in a salt-belt state, especially while the rear of the vehicle is already apart.
