An ABS light that stays on in a 2010-2015 Honda CR-Z means the anti-lock system has shut itself off after detecting a fault. Honda's owner's manual is clear that the car still has normal braking with the ABS light on, but no anti-lock function. The most common trigger is a bad signal from one wheel speed sensor, followed by damaged sensor wiring, a contaminated or damaged tone ring, wheel bearing play, and mismatched tires.
How the ABS and VSA Systems Work on the CR-Z
The CR-Z uses disc brakes at all four wheels with a vacuum power assist. On top of that base hydraulic system, Honda layers several electronic functions that all share the same modulator and the same wheel speed signals:
- ABS (anti-lock brake system) pulses brake pressure far faster than a driver can to keep the wheels from locking so you can still steer during a hard stop. Honda notes the ABS stops working below about 6 mph (10 km/h), which is normal.
- EBD (electronic brake distribution) is part of the ABS and balances front-to-rear braking according to how the car is loaded.
- Brake assist adds braking force when you press the pedal hard in an emergency.
- VSA (Vehicle Stability Assist) brakes individual wheels to keep the car pointed where you steer. On the CR-Z the VSA indicator also covers the hill start assist and brake assist systems, and on CVT cars the creep aid system.
Because every one of these systems depends on accurate wheel speed readings, a single weak sensor signal often turns on more than one light at once. That is why an ABS light on a CR-Z frequently shows up together with the VSA light.
What the Warning Lights Are Telling You
The brake-related lights should come on for a few seconds when you switch the ignition on and then go out. What matters is which ones stay on.
| Light(s) on | What Honda says it means | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| ABS only | Problem in the ABS. Normal braking remains, but no anti-lock function. | Drive carefully, get it diagnosed soon |
| VSA only (steady) | Problem in VSA, hill start assist, brake assist or creep aid | Get it checked soon |
| ABS and VSA together | Usually a shared input fault such as a wheel speed sensor | Diagnose before wet or winter driving |
| Red brake light only | Parking brake applied, low brake fluid, or a brake system problem | Check pedal feel and fluid level right away |
| Red brake light and ABS together | EBD is not working, which can make the car unstable under sudden braking | Have it inspected immediately |
If the red brake light comes on while driving, Honda's instruction is to press the pedal lightly to check pedal pressure. If it feels normal, check the fluid at your next stop. If it feels wrong, act immediately and use engine braking to slow down.
Most Common Causes of a CR-Z ABS Light
1. A failed or dirty wheel speed sensor
Each wheel has a sensor reading a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the hub. The HELLA and MOTOR technical guides list the usual failure modes: internal short circuits, heavy contamination, metallic debris on the sensor tip, and physical damage. When one sensor drops out, the ABS module can no longer compare wheel speeds and shuts the system down.
2. Damaged sensor wiring or connector
The sensor harness runs down to each wheel where it sees water, road salt and suspension movement. Broken wires and corroded connectors are a leading cause, and an intermittent break often makes the light come and go over bumps.
3. Tone ring or encoder problems
Rust buildup, chipped or missing teeth, or a cracked ring gives the sensor an erratic signal. MOTOR notes that on many designs the magnetic encoder is built into the wheel bearing seal, so a damaged bearing seal can cause the same fault.
4. Wheel bearing play
Excess bearing clearance changes the gap between the sensor and its ring and makes the signal unstable. HELLA includes wheel bearing play in its visual checks before condemning a sensor.
5. Mismatched or wrong-size tires
Honda warns that tires of a different size or construction can make the ABS and VSA work incorrectly, and that VSA may not function properly with mixed tire types or sizes. A different-diameter tire on one corner reads as a wheel turning at the wrong speed. Replace tires in pairs at minimum, all four ideally, in the size on the door placard. A compact spare also makes the TPMS light blink and then stay on until your regular tire goes back on.
6. Low brake fluid or worn pads
This one normally brings on the red brake light rather than the ABS light, but it belongs in the same diagnosis. Honda's manual says that if the fluid is at or below the MIN mark, the car should be inspected for leaks or worn brake pads. Fluid level drops as pads wear because the caliper pistons move outward.
How to Diagnose It
- Read the codes with the right tool. ABS and VSA faults are stored in the brake control module, not the engine computer. A basic engine code reader will not see them, so use a scan tool that reads Honda ABS and VSA codes. The code will usually name the wheel.
- Check the basics. HELLA's checklist starts with tire size, pressure and tread depth on all four corners, then wheel bearing play, brake fluid level and pad wear.
- Inspect the sensor and harness at the flagged wheel. Look for chafed wires, a loose or corroded connector, and debris on the sensor tip.
- Watch live wheel speed data. On a test drive, all four wheel speeds should track together. One that drops out, reads zero, or spikes identifies the problem corner.
- Test the circuit correctly. MOTOR and HELLA both point out that an ohmmeter test only applies to passive (magnetic coil) sensors. Active sensors must be checked for supply voltage and a clean square-wave signal. HELLA recommends measuring at the sensor connector so the whole line back to the control unit is checked.
The Fix and What to Replace With It
Most CR-Z ABS lights are fixed by replacing a wheel speed sensor or repairing its wiring. If the ring or wheel bearing is damaged, the hub or bearing gets replaced instead, since a new sensor will not cure a bad signal source. When installing a sensor, HELLA advises cleaning the mounting surface with a wire brush, tightening the bolt to the manufacturer's torque value, and routing the cable exactly as original so it cannot rub. Then clear codes and road test with the scan tool connected to confirm all four wheel speeds read correctly.
A sensor job is a good time to look at the rest of the corner. If the pads are near their limit, or you hear a continuous metallic friction sound when braking, which Honda identifies as pads needing replacement, do them while the wheel is off. For the front axle we carry EBC Redstuff ceramic low-dust front pads for the 2010-2015 CR-Z for daily driving, and EBC Yellowstuff street and track front pads for the CR-Z for owners who drive hard. Browse all brake pads and brake rotors if the rotors are scored or worn.
Brake fluid matters too. Honda specifies Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3 and says to replace it every 3 years regardless of the Maintenance Minder. DOT 3 or DOT 4 from a sealed container is acceptable as a temporary substitute. Never use DOT 5, which Honda says can cause extensive damage. Old, moisture-laden fluid is hard on the ABS modulator, so if yours is overdue, flush it.
How Hard Is the Job?
Reading codes and inspecting wiring is easy with the right scan tool. Swapping a sensor is a basic job when it comes out cleanly, but on older cars in salt states the sensor body can corrode into the knuckle and need careful extraction, which turns a short job into a long one. Bearing or hub replacement is a moderate job that needs proper tools. Any fault that also lights the red brake warning, or a modulator fault, should go to a shop with Honda-capable diagnostic software.

Is it safe to drive my CR-Z with the ABS light on?
Honda says the car keeps normal braking ability but loses anti-lock function, so wheels can lock in a panic stop, especially on wet or icy roads. Drive gently and get it diagnosed soon. If the red brake light is on as well, EBD is also off and Honda says to have it inspected immediately.
Why are the ABS and VSA lights on at the same time?
Both systems use the same wheel speed signals. When one sensor or its wiring fails, ABS and VSA both switch off rather than act on bad data, so both lights come on together.
Can new tires cause the ABS light?
Yes. Honda warns that tires of a different size or construction can make the ABS and VSA work incorrectly. Mixed sizes or one mismatched tire can trigger a fault.
Will new brake pads turn off the ABS light?
Not by themselves. Worn pads and low fluid bring on the red brake light, not the ABS light. However, a sensor or wire damaged during a previous brake job is a common cause, so inspect the harness whenever the wheel is off.
What brake fluid does the CR-Z use?
Honda specifies Honda Heavy Duty Brake Fluid DOT 3, replaced every 3 years. DOT 3 or DOT 4 from a sealed container can be used as a temporary substitute. Never use DOT 5.
