Most brake noise on a 2019-2024 Genesis G70 comes from three things: squeal from pad vibration against the rotor (usually missing or dry shims and hardware), grinding from pads worn to the backing plate or a sticking caliper, and pulsation from uneven rotor thickness or rust on the hub face. The fix is almost always a correct-fit pad and rotor job done with clean hubs, new hardware and a proper bed-in - but you first need to know which brake package your G70 has.
Know Your G70 Brake Package First
The G70 was built with two very different brake systems, and parts do not cross over. Early cars came with either the standard brakes or the optional Brembo package, depending on engine and trim. Genesis states that beginning with the 2023 product-enhancement model, even the base 2.5T car was equipped with Brembo brakes, so many later cars are Brembo-equipped from the factory.
| Setup | Front rotor | Rear rotor | How to spot it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard (non-Brembo), 2.0T and 3.3T, 2019-2022 | 320 mm diameter, 28 mm thick | 314 mm diameter, 13 mm thick | Sliding front caliper, no Brembo script |
| Brembo package | Larger vented rotor | Larger rotor | Fixed multi-piston caliper with Brembo logo, usually painted |
Look through the wheel spokes before you order anything. A Brembo car takes Brembo-specific pads and larger rotors; a standard-brake car takes the smaller rotors listed above. Ordering by year alone is the most common reason G70 owners end up with parts that do not fit.
Squeal: What It Means and How to Diagnose It
Wagner's technical guidance puts it simply: vibration is the main source of noise in a brake system. A high-pitched squeal is the pad and rotor vibrating at an audible frequency. On a G70 it usually shows up in a few patterns:
- Squeal at light pedal, quiet under firm braking - classic pad vibration. Check for missing, damaged or unlubricated shims and dry contact points on the caliper bracket.
- Squeal with no brake applied - often the pad wear indicator tab touching the rotor. That is a deliberate warning that the pads are near the end of their life.
- Squeal right after new pads - reused worn clips, a rusty hub or bracket, or pads that were never bedded in.
- Morning squeal that goes away - a light film of surface rust on the rotors after damp nights. This is normal and clears in a few stops.
Brembo's own service guidance notes that squeal after a brake job is quite often not a defect in the new part, but the result of worn or corroded components around it: caliper pistons, seals, sliding elements and abutment surfaces. That matters on the Brembo-equipped G70, where fixed calipers rely on clean pistons and correctly fitted pad springs to stay quiet.
Grinding: Stop Driving and Inspect
Grinding is metal on metal, and it gets expensive fast. The common causes are:
- Pads worn through the friction material - the steel backing plate is cutting the rotor. The rotors will almost certainly need replacement, not resurfacing.
- Sticking caliper or seized guide pins - Wagner calls out binding or corroded guide pins and calipers that do not release, which drag the pad on the rotor and wear one side far faster than the other.
- Debris or a bent dust shield - a stone trapped between the shield and rotor makes a constant scraping noise even off the brakes.
Pull the wheels and compare inner and outer pad thickness. If one pad is much thinner than its partner, the caliper is not sliding or releasing freely, and new pads alone will not fix it. On a standard-brake G70 that means cleaning and lubricating the slide pins or replacing the caliper; on the Brembo fixed caliper it means checking that the pistons retract evenly.
Pulsation: The Warped Rotor Myth
A pedal that pulses or a steering wheel that shakes when braking from highway speed is usually blamed on warped rotors. Power Stop's technical guide explains the real cause is disc thickness variation (DTV): the rotor becomes slightly thicker in some spots than others, so the pads push the caliper back and forth as it turns. DTV comes from uneven pad deposits, incorrect rotor installation, misaligned calipers, and rust or dirt trapped between the rotor and hub.
Lateral runout is the related problem - the rotor wobbles side to side even if its thickness is even. Runout that starts small grows into DTV over thousands of miles because the pad kisses the high spot on every rotation. Brembo's service guidance says rotor runout should not exceed 0.10 mm and that hub coupling surfaces must be cleaned of rust and debris before fitting a disc. Uneven lug nut tightening can also distort the rotor-to-hub clamp, so torque the wheels by hand to the factory specification in a star pattern.
On a G70, pulsation that appears mostly in the steering wheel points to the front axle; pulsation you feel in the seat and pedal more than the wheel often points to the rear.
The Fix: Parts and What to Replace Together
For squeal or light pulsation on rotors that are still above minimum thickness, pads plus cleaned hardware may be enough. For grinding, deep grooves or real DTV, replace pads and rotors as a set on the axle.
- Pads: a quality ceramic pad is the quiet, low-dust choice for a daily-driven G70. For the rear we carry 2019-2024 Genesis G70 rear ceramic brake pads from Bendix, and you can browse more ceramic brake pads by fitment.
- Rotors: match the diameter to your brake package. Browse replacement brake rotors and confirm size before ordering.
- Hardware: Wagner recommends replacing worn anti-rattle clips, springs and pins rather than reusing them. A fresh brake hardware kit is cheap insurance against comeback noise.
- Lubrication: use a high-temperature silicone brake lubricant on shim backs and contact points. Wagner warns against tacky compounds on the back of bonded shims because they can pull the shim off the pad.
- Brake fluid: if the fluid is dark or past the interval in the owner's manual, flush it while the system is open, using the fluid type printed on the reservoir cap.
Bed-In and Job Difficulty
New pads and rotors are not finished until they are bedded in. Wagner's procedure is 20 slow-downs from 50 mph to 20 mph with light pedal pressure, allowing at least 30 seconds between each for cooling. Brembo recommends gentle braking during roughly the first 300 km so the pad and disc surfaces mate evenly. Skipping this step is a common cause of both squeal and early pulsation.
A pad and rotor job on a standard-brake G70 is a moderate DIY with basic hand tools, a torque wrench and a way to compress the piston. The Brembo fixed calipers make pad swaps simpler but demand extra care cleaning pistons and fitting pad springs. Rear service can require putting the parking brake into a service mode if your car uses an electronic parking brake; follow the factory procedure. Find all brake pads by vehicle to start.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my G70 brakes squeal after new pads?
Usually reused worn clips, dry or missing shims, rust left on the hub or bracket, or pads that were never bedded in. Clean every contact point, fit new hardware, lubricate correctly and perform the bed-in procedure.
Are Brembo and non-Brembo G70 pads interchangeable?
No. The Brembo package uses fixed multi-piston calipers and larger rotors, while standard cars use sliding calipers with smaller 320 mm front and 314 mm rear rotors. Check your calipers before ordering.
Can I just resurface my G70 rotors to stop pulsation?
Only if they remain above the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor after machining and the hub face is clean and true. Rotors that were scored by metal backing plates should be replaced.
Is there a brake recall on the Genesis G70?
NHTSA recall 21V-161 covered 552 model-year 2019-2021 G70 sedans whose ABS module could short internally and create a fire risk; dealers replace the ABS module fuse free of charge. It does not address pad or rotor noise, but check your VIN on nhtsa.gov.
Is morning brake grinding on my G70 normal?
A brief scraping sound for the first few stops after rain or a damp night is surface rust wiping off the rotors and is normal. Grinding that persists or gets louder is not.
