EBC Brakes for the Subaru Legacy: Which Parts Fit

Performance brake pads and slotted rotors for the Subaru Legacy

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

EBC and other performance brake parts do fit the Subaru Legacy, but the right part depends on the model year and the trim, not just the name on the trunk. A 2010-2014 Legacy 2.5 GT, a 2006 Legacy 2.5i and a 2015 Legacy each take different rotor and pad part numbers, so match the exact year and trim before you order anything.

Below is what we currently stock for the Legacy, how each part is meant to be used, and what to check on your car before and during the brake job.

Legacy Performance Brake Parts We Carry, by Year and Trim

Every part in this table is listed for a specific Legacy year range and, where it matters, a specific trim. Open the product page and confirm your year, trim and axle position before buying.

Part Axle Legacy fitment listed Type
EBC BSD7710 V-Slot rotor set Rear 2015 Slotted rotors
EBC BSD7585 V-Slot rotors Rear 2010-2014 2.5 GT Slotted rotors
EBC Bluestuff NDX DP51758NDX pads Rear 2010-2014 2.5 GT Street and track day pads
Hawk Talon HTC5394 rotor set Front 2015 Drilled and slotted rotors
Hawk Talon HTC5395 rotor set Rear 2015 Drilled and slotted rotors
Hawk Talon HTC5020 rotor set Rear 2006 2.5i Drilled and slotted rotors
DBA DB1722SP SP500 pads Front 2005-2008 Street performance pads

Notice the split. The 2.5 GT is the turbocharged Legacy and it does not share every brake part with the 2.5i, and the 2015 car sits on its own part numbers. If your year or trim is not in the table, browse our full brake rotor range and brake pad range.

EBC on the Legacy: BSD Rotors and Bluestuff NDX Pads

BSD V-Slot rotors

EBC's BSD rotors are cast from G3000 grey iron, heat-treated and balanced, then machined with a bi-directional blade slot pattern. The slots clear hot gases out of the braking zone, which keeps the pads flatter and cooler and helps them wear evenly, and the overlapping slot layout keeps wind noise down. Each rotor gets a corrosion-resistant finish, which matters on a Legacy that sees winter road salt. EBC designs them to run with its sport pad lines, Bluestuff NDX included, which is why the BSD7585 rotors and DP51758NDX pads for the 2010-2014 2.5 GT make a natural rear-axle pair.

Bluestuff NDX pads

Bluestuff NDX is EBC's dual-purpose compound: a street pad that doubles as an entry-level track day pad. EBC lists it at a friction coefficient of 0.52 and a working range from ambient up to 550 C (about 1000 F), with an expected street life of 20,000 miles and upwards. The friction material is locked to the steel backing plate with a mechanical hook system that EBC says raises shear and bond strength by a factor of five, which guards against the pad separating from the plate under heat.

The trade-off is honest: a high-friction, track-capable pad is more aggressive than an everyday ceramic. For a 2.5 GT that gets driven spiritedly or sees an occasional track day, it is a strong match. For a commuter that never gets the brakes warm, a street ceramic is the quieter, cleaner choice. See our ceramic brake pads for that route.

Hawk Talon and DBA SP500: The Other Legacy Options

Hawk Talon rotors are cast from G3000 grade iron and built to original-equipment specifications and weight, so they fit the existing caliper and hub without modification. They combine cross-drilling with CNC-machined slots, and a coating barrier resists corrosion and helps the pads bed in quickly. Drilled and slotted rotors suit a street car where you want a performance look and quick debris and water clearing. Hawk points slotted-only rotors at motorsport and heavy-duty use, so if you track the car seriously, drilled rotors are not the first choice.

DBA's SP500 is a copper-free street performance pad aimed at daily drivers and performance cars that want more than factory-style stopping power, with low dust and reduced noise. On the 2005-2008 Legacy front axle it is a sensible daily-driver upgrade that pairs with any quality rotor.

Check These Before You Order: Recalls and the Parking Brake

Two Legacy brake-system recalls are worth knowing before you put the car on stands.

  • Brake line corrosion, 2005-2009 Legacy. Subaru recalled certain 2005-2009 Legacy and Outback models that were ever registered in salt-belt states, Ohio included. The lines could corrode near the four-way joint connector and in areas without resin covers, and a perforated line leaks fluid, which lengthens pedal travel. The remedy was inspection and anti-corrosion treatment, or replacement of all four lines if any leaked. On an older Legacy, look hard at the lines while the wheels are off and replace rusty ones with new brake lines.
  • Electronic parking brake actuator, 2010-2014 Legacy. Subaru recalled 2010-2014 Legacy and Outback manual-transmission cars (NHTSA 18V-626) to replace the electronic parking brake actuator, because a capacitor or sensor ring in the control unit could crack. Automatic cars were covered by an extended warranty instead. If your brake warning light is on, have that sorted before the rear brake job.

Run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup to confirm whether your car had open work.

Doing the Job: What to Replace Together

Pads and rotors should always be replaced in axle pairs, and new rotors deserve new pads. Putting fresh pads on worn rotors, or new rotors under glazed pads, is a common cause of a pulsing pedal and noise after a brake job.

  • Hardware. Replace the abutment clips and anti-rattle springs, and clean and lubricate the caliper slide pins. A brake hardware kit is inexpensive insurance against squeal and uneven pad wear.
  • Fluid. Use the brake fluid type printed on the reservoir cap or in your owner's manual, and flush it if it is dark. Old fluid that has absorbed moisture boils sooner, which matters with a track-capable pad.
  • Hoses. On an older car, check the rubber hoses for cracking or swelling.

On a 2010 and newer Legacy, the rear caliper works with the electronic parking brake, so the rear job needs the parking brake put into its service mode before the piston is retracted. The procedure is in the factory service manual; do not force the piston back. Front work is conventional. Torque caliper bolts and lug nuts to the values in the factory service manual.

After installation, bed the pads in. EBC's street procedure for Bluestuff NDX is a set of stops from highway speed, a cool-down, then a second set, and EBC notes friction builds after only a few stops. Follow the bed-in instructions in the box for whichever pad you use.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do EBC brakes fit every Subaru Legacy?

No single EBC part fits every Legacy. Part numbers change by year and trim, and the 2.5 GT uses different parts from the 2.5i. Match the listing to your exact year and trim.

Are Bluestuff NDX pads too aggressive for daily driving?

EBC rates them for street use with an expected life of 20,000 miles and up, but they are a high-friction, track-capable compound. If you never drive the car hard, a street ceramic pad will be quieter and cleaner.

Can I mix EBC rotors with a different brand of pad?

Yes, as long as both parts are listed for your year, trim and axle. Bed the new pads to the new rotors either way.

Do drilled and slotted rotors stop better than plain rotors?

They help with heat, gas and water management and pad bite, which shows up in hard or repeated stops and wet weather. For ordinary commuting the difference is small; the pad compound matters more.

Why does the rear brake job need a special procedure on a 2010 or newer Legacy?

Those cars use an electronic parking brake. It must be put in service mode before the rear piston is pushed back, or you risk damaging the actuator.
