When the ABS light stays on in a 1997-2007 Dodge Caravan, the anti-lock system has found a fault and switched itself off. Your normal brakes still work as long as the red BRAKE light is off, but you lose anti-lock control until the fault is fixed. The usual culprits are a wheel speed sensor, its wiring or tone ring, a worn wheel bearing, low brake fluid, or the ABS control unit itself.
How the ABS Works on This Caravan
These Caravans use the Teves Mark 20 family of anti-lock brakes, which Chrysler first put on its minivans for 1997. The hydraulic and electronic parts live in one assembly mounted behind the steering rack on the left side of the front suspension crossmember. Chrysler calls the valve and pump block the Integrated Control Unit (ICU) and the module that holds the electronics and solenoids the Controller for Anti-lock Brakes (CAB).
Each wheel has its own speed sensor. The CAB compares all four signals constantly. If one wheel slows much faster than the others during a hard stop, the CAB pulses the brake pressure to that wheel so it keeps turning instead of locking.
The later Mark 20e version adds Electronically Variable Brake Proportioning (EVBP). Instead of a mechanical proportioning valve, the controller watches rear wheel speed and meters rear brake pressure through the ABS valves to keep front-to-rear balance right as the load changes. That matters for diagnosis: on a Mark 20e van, an ABS fault can also take away electronic rear brake balancing, which is why the owner's manual treats a combined ABS and BRAKE light as urgent.
What the Warning Lights Are Telling You
| What you see | What it means | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light on for a few seconds at key-on, then off | Normal bulb check and self-test | Nothing to do |
| ABS light stays on while driving, BRAKE light off | Anti-lock is disabled; conventional brakes still work | Get it diagnosed soon |
| ABS light and BRAKE light both on | Anti-lock and electronic brake force distribution are not working | Repair immediately |
| ABS light never comes on at key-on | Bulb or circuit problem; you would not be warned of a fault | Have it checked |
The 2005 owner's manual says the light may stay on for up to four seconds at start-up as part of normal operation. If it stays on beyond that, Chrysler's own wording is that the anti-lock portion of the system is not functioning and service is required.
Common Causes, Most Likely First
1. Wheel speed sensor or its signal
The sensors sit right behind the wheels, where they take road salt, water, brake dust and heat. A sensor can fail internally, but just as often the sensor is fine and the signal is bad: debris stuck to the sensor tip, rust building up under the sensor so it sits too far from the tone ring, or a cracked wire. On the Mark 20e sensors, the gap between the sensor and the ring is fixed and not adjustable, so anything that pushes the sensor out of position shows up as a weak or dropped signal.
2. Wiring and connectors
The harness flexes every time the suspension moves and every time you steer. The weak points are where the wire leaves the sensor body and where it plugs into the body harness. Look for cracked insulation, green corrosion in the connector, and chafed spots against brackets.
3. Damaged or rusted tone ring
The toothed ring the sensor reads can crack, lose teeth, or swell with rust. A ring that is pitted or damaged gives an erratic signal that looks to the controller like a wheel slipping or locking. When the ring is part of the hub or axle assembly, the repair is that assembly rather than just the sensor.
4. Worn wheel bearing
This is the one most often missed. A loose bearing lets the hub and tone ring wobble relative to the sensor, and the signal gets erratic. People replace the sensor, the light goes out for a day, then comes back. Check for play before you buy a sensor.
5. Low brake fluid or a hydraulic problem
Low fluid usually brings on the red BRAKE light, and on these vans that often appears alongside the ABS light. Fluid drops naturally as disc pads wear, but a big drop can mean a leak. Chrysler specifies Mopar DOT 3 (SAE J1703) in the 2005 owner's manual, with DOT 4 acceptable if DOT 3 is not available. Do not substitute silicone fluid.
6. ABS controller (CAB) or pump motor
The module and pump can fail, usually from corrosion at the connector or an internal fault. This is the most expensive fix, so rule out everything above first.
How to Diagnose It
- Read the codes. The ABS codes are stored in the CAB, not the engine computer, so a basic reader that only reads engine codes will show nothing. You need a scan tool that talks to the anti-lock module (the factory tool for this era was the DRB III).
- Compare live wheel speeds. With a capable scan tool, drive slowly on a straight, level road and watch all four wheel speeds. They should read nearly the same. The wheel that drops out, reads zero or jumps around is your problem corner.
- Check that wheel's bearing. Lift the corner, grab the tire at top and bottom, then at the sides, and rock it. Any clunk or play points to the bearing or hub.
- Inspect the sensor and ring. Pull the sensor, clean the tip and the mounting bore, and look at the tone ring for cracked, missing or rust-swollen teeth.
- Trace the wiring. Follow the harness from the sensor to the body connector. Wiggle it with the scan tool showing live data; if the reading flickers, you have found a broken wire.
- Check fluid level at the master cylinder reservoir and look for wet spots at the lines, hoses and calipers.
The Fix and What to Replace Together
Most ABS lights on these vans come down to one corner. Match the repair to what you found:
- Bad sensor: replace the sensor, clean rust out of the mounting bore so it seats fully, and clear the codes.
- Damaged ring or loose bearing: replace the hub or bearing assembly. A new sensor alone will not cure a wobbling ring.
- Broken wire: repair with sealed, soldered joints or replace the sensor lead. Twisted and taped splices corrode and fail again.
- Leak or low fluid: fix the leak first. A leaking brake caliper, a cracked brake hose or a failing master cylinder all cause fluid loss.
If the wheel is already off, it is a good time to look at the rest of the brake. Worn brake pads drop the fluid level, and a scored or warped brake rotor is easier to replace while you are there. At the rear, rusted springs and clips cause drag and noise; a Grand Caravan rear brake hardware kit covers those small parts.
After any hydraulic work on an ABS van, bleed the system the way the factory service manual describes. Air trapped in the ICU can give a soft pedal, and some procedures call for a scan tool to cycle the ABS valves during bleeding.
How Hard Is the Job?
Reading codes and replacing a wheel speed sensor is a driveway job for most people with basic tools and a scan tool that reads ABS. The hardest part is usually a sensor rusted into its bore. A hub or bearing assembly is a moderate job. Controller or pump work, bleeding a replaced ICU, and chasing intermittent wiring faults are where a shop with a factory-level scan tool earns its money.

Is it safe to drive my Caravan with the ABS light on?
If only the ABS light is on and the red BRAKE light is off, the normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a panic stop. Drive gently and get it fixed soon. If both lights are on, have it repaired right away.
Will a regular code reader find the ABS problem?
Usually not. The anti-lock codes live in the ABS controller, and a basic engine code reader cannot talk to it. You need a scan tool with ABS coverage for Chrysler.
Why did the ABS light come back after I replaced the sensor?
The most common reasons are a worn wheel bearing, a damaged or rusted tone ring, rust in the sensor bore holding the new sensor away from the ring, or a broken wire elsewhere in the harness. Recheck live wheel speeds to confirm which wheel is still at fault.
Can low brake fluid turn on the ABS light?
Low fluid mainly triggers the red BRAKE light, and on these vans the two lights often come on together. Top up with the fluid Chrysler specifies (DOT 3, with DOT 4 acceptable) and find out why it was low.
Should I pump the brakes if my ABS is not working?
With working ABS, Chrysler says not to pump the pedal; press firmly and let the system do the work. With ABS disabled, the van brakes like a non-ABS vehicle, so avoid hard stops that could lock the wheels until it is repaired.
