An ABS light on a 2018-2023 Chevrolet Traverse means the antilock brake module has found a fault and switched antilock braking off. If the ABS light is the only warning on, GM says you still have normal brakes but no antilock function; if the red brake system light is on with it, there is also a problem with the regular brakes and the Traverse should be inspected before it is driven further. The most common causes are a wheel speed sensor signal problem, damaged sensor wiring or connectors, a failing hub bearing encoder, low brake fluid, or a fault inside the ABS module itself.
What the ABS Light Means on the Traverse
The second-generation Traverse uses an electronic antilock brake system that also feeds traction control and StabiliTrak. Each wheel has a speed sensor, and the ABS module compares those four signals constantly. When one wheel starts to lock during hard braking, the module pulses the brake pressure at that wheel so the tire keeps rolling and you keep steering control.
According to the Traverse owner's manual, the system checks itself when the vehicle first drives away. A short motor or clicking noise and a slight movement of the brake pedal during that test are normal. The ABS light should come on briefly at start-up and then go out. If it stays on, or comes back on while driving, the system has stored a fault and needs service.
The manual draws a clear line between two situations:
| Lights on the dash | What GM says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | Regular brakes work, antilock braking does not | Drivable with care; leave extra stopping room and get it scanned soon |
| ABS light and red brake system light | ABS is off and there is a problem with the regular brakes | Have it inspected right away; if the red light stays on after a safe stop, GM advises towing |
| ABS light plus traction or StabiliTrak lights | These systems share the wheel speed signals, so one sensor fault can disable all of them | Scan for codes; the root cause is usually the same |
The 2018 manual also says that if the light comes on while driving, you can stop when it is safe, turn the vehicle off and restart it to let the system reset. If the light returns, the fault is real and a restart will not fix it.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on a 2018-2023 Traverse
1. Wheel speed sensor signal problems
This is the most frequent cause on any modern vehicle. The sensor reads a toothed or magnetic encoder ring that turns with the wheel. As Brake and Front End explains, an air gap that is too wide between the sensor and the ring can produce a weak or erratic signal, or none at all, and magnetic sensors can collect metallic debris from brake linings and rotors that interferes with the reading. Rust scale building up under a sensor mount can push it away from the ring and cause the same problem.
2. Damaged wiring or corroded connectors
The sensor harness runs close to the suspension and brakes, where it flexes with every bump and gets sprayed with water and road salt. A chafed wire, a cracked connector or corrosion inside a plug is a very common reason for an intermittent ABS light, especially one that comes on over bumps or in wet weather. Wiring damage is also easy to cause during brake or suspension work if a harness clip is left undone.
3. Worn hub bearing or damaged encoder
The encoder that the speed sensor reads turns with the wheel hub. When a hub bearing wears and develops play, the gap between sensor and encoder changes as the wheel turns, and the module sees an erratic speed signal. A humming or growling noise that changes with speed, alongside an ABS light, points toward a hub bearing. A damaged or corroded encoder ring can trigger the same codes even when the sensor itself is fine.
4. Low brake fluid
The owner's manual notes that when brake fluid falls to a low level, the brake system warning light comes on. Fluid drops slowly as pads wear, so a low reservoir on a Traverse with worn pads is not unusual, but a sudden drop points to a leak. Either way, low fluid is a regular brake problem, not just an ABS problem, and it needs attention before the vehicle is driven hard.
5. ABS module, pump or low battery voltage
Less often, the fault is in the ABS control module or the hydraulic unit itself. Before condemning an expensive module, confirm the battery and charging system are healthy; electronic brake modules are sensitive to low voltage, and a weak battery can set several unrelated warning lights at once.
How to Diagnose It
- Note which lights are on. ABS alone, ABS with the red brake light, or ABS with traction and StabiliTrak lights all narrow the search, as shown in the table above.
- Check the brake fluid. With the Traverse in Park on level ground, the level should sit between the minimum and maximum marks on the reservoir. If it is low, look for leaks at each wheel and along the lines, and check pad thickness.
- Read the codes with an ABS-capable scan tool. A basic engine code reader often cannot see brake module codes. The code will usually name the wheel and whether the fault is a missing signal, an erratic signal or a circuit problem.
- Watch live wheel speed data. On a test drive all four readings should match closely in a straight line. A wheel that drops to zero or jumps around points to that corner.
- Inspect the suspect corner. Look at the sensor, its mounting surface, the harness and the connector. Clean debris and corrosion, check for chafing, and check the hub for play. Brake and Front End recommends checking the sensor and its wiring for corrosion or loose connectors before replacing parts.
The Fix: Which Part to Replace
The right repair depends on the code and what the inspection shows:
- Dirty or rust-lifted sensor: remove, clean the tip and the mounting bore, and reinstall. No parts needed if the sensor tests good.
- Failed sensor or damaged pigtail: replace the sensor or repair the harness with a sealed connection. On some corners the sensor may be serviced only as part of the hub assembly, so confirm how your Traverse is built before ordering.
- Worn hub bearing or bad encoder: replace the hub bearing assembly on that corner.
- Low fluid from pad wear: the real fix is new pads, not topping off. GM specifically warns against topping off the reservoir because the level rises again when new, thicker linings push the caliper pistons back. See our brake pads for the Traverse and other SUVs and, if the rotors are worn or scored, replacement brake rotors.
- Low fluid from a leak: repair the leaking line, hose or caliper, then bleed the system.
- Module or pump fault: confirm with the scan tool and voltage checks first; this is typically a dealer or well-equipped shop repair because a new unit may need programming.
Use the correct fluid when bleeding. The 2018 Traverse owner's manual specifies GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid, while the 2023 manual specifies GM approved DOT 4. The reservoir cap on your vehicle shows which one it takes, and GM calls for replacing the brake fluid every five years because it absorbs water over time.
What to Replace at the Same Time
If a hub bearing is the cause, check the bearing on the other side of the same axle; bearings on a heavy three-row SUV often wear at similar rates. If you are opening the brakes to replace a sensor or bearing and the pads are near the end of their life, it is the cheapest time to do them, since the caliper and rotor are already off. For rear pad replacement on the 2018-2023 Traverse, this Bendix rear ceramic brake pad set for the Traverse and Acadia is a direct fit. Always replace pads in axle sets, and replace any harness clips or retainers you break during removal so the sensor wire cannot rub against a moving part later. You can find hardware and other small parts in our full brake parts catalog.
The 2018-2023 Traverse also has an electric parking brake. If you work on the rear brakes, follow the service procedure for putting the parking brake into its service mode before pushing the rear caliper pistons back, so you do not damage the actuator.
How Hard Is the Job?
Cleaning a sensor or repairing a connector is a straightforward driveway job with basic hand tools, but finding the right corner requires a scan tool that can read ABS codes and live data. Replacing a hub bearing is moderate: the wheel, caliper and rotor come off, and the hub bolts are usually tight and rusted, so good tools and patience matter. Tighten everything to the values in the factory service manual. Module replacement and programming is best left to a shop.
Before any repair, check the recall status of your specific vehicle by VIN. As of this writing, NHTSA recall records for the 2018-2023 Traverse list campaigns for transmissions, air bags, tires, the fuel pump, a frame rail and the driveline, but none for the antilock brake system.

Is it safe to drive a Traverse with the ABS light on?
If the ABS light is the only warning on, GM says the regular brakes still work but antilock braking does not, so wheels can lock in a panic stop. Drive gently, leave extra room, and get it diagnosed soon. If the red brake system light is also on, have the brakes inspected right away.
Why are my ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak lights all on at once?
All three systems rely on the same wheel speed sensor signals. When one sensor or its wiring fails, the module shuts off every system that depends on it, so a single fault usually lights all three.
Will the ABS light reset by itself after a repair?
Some faults clear after the module sees good signals during a drive, but many codes need to be cleared with a scan tool. If the light returns after clearing, the underlying fault is still present.
Can worn brake pads turn on a warning light?
Worn pads lower the brake fluid level, and low fluid turns on the red brake system warning light. Topping off is not the fix; new pads bring the level back up, according to the owner's manual.
Is the clicking noise when I pull away normal?
Yes. The Traverse owner's manual says the ABS runs a self-check when the vehicle starts moving, and a brief motor or clicking noise with slight pedal movement is normal.
What brake fluid does a 2018-2023 Traverse use?
The 2018 owner's manual calls for GM approved DOT 3 and the 2023 manual calls for GM approved DOT 4. Check the reservoir cap on your vehicle and use the type printed there.
