When the ABS light stays on in a 2005-2008 Cadillac STS, the car still has normal brakes as long as the red brake warning light is off, but the anti-lock function is disabled until the fault is fixed. The most common causes are a bad or contaminated wheel speed sensor, damaged sensor wiring or connectors, a damaged tone ring or worn hub bearing, low system voltage, and low brake fluid. Reading the stored ABS code with a scan tool is the step that separates a cheap fix from an expensive guess.
How the ABS System Works on the STS
The STS uses a computer-controlled anti-lock system that watches the speed of each wheel. Cadillac's owner manual describes it plainly: when a wheel is about to stop rolling, the computer works the brakes at each wheel separately, and it keeps receiving wheel speed updates as you brake. The same hardware also supports the traction control system, StabiliTrak stability control, and Panic Brake Assist, which is why one bad sensor can light up several warnings at once.
A few normal behaviors are worth knowing so you do not chase a problem that is not there:
- The ABS light comes on at start-up and may stay on for several seconds. That is a bulb check, not a fault.
- When you drive away, the system runs a self-test. You may hear a brief motor or clicking noise and feel the pedal move slightly.
- During a hard stop the pedal pulsates and the pump runs. Hold the pedal down firmly; do not pump it.
- A STABILITY SYS NOT READY message after start-up can simply mean the sensors need a short stretch of straight driving to center, or the system is warming up in cold weather.
What the Warning Lights and Messages Mean
The STS can show several related warnings. Knowing which one is on tells you how urgent the problem is.
| Warning | What it means | Can you drive? |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | Fault in the anti-lock portion; base brakes still work | Yes, carefully, without anti-lock. Get it scanned soon |
| ABS light plus red brake light | No anti-lock and a problem with the regular brakes | No. Stop safely; the manual says to have it towed if the light stays on |
| TC light on | Traction control fault, or traction control switched off with the TC button | Yes, but check whether the button was pressed |
| SERVICE STABILITY SYS | StabiliTrak fault; the system is not operational | Yes, drive more cautiously and have it inspected |
| SERVICE BRAKE ASSIST | Panic brake assist fault detected | Yes, but have it serviced |
| CHECK BRAKE FLUID | Brake fluid level is low in the master cylinder reservoir | Inspect for leaks and worn pads before driving far |
Cadillac's reset procedure is simple: if the ABS light comes on while driving, stop when it is safe, turn the ignition off, and restart. If the light returns or stays on, the system has a stored fault that needs diagnosis. A light that goes away after a restart but keeps coming back usually points to an intermittent sensor signal or wiring problem.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on the 2005-2008 STS
1. Wheel speed sensor faults
This is the most common single cause. Brake and Front End, a long-running technical trade publication, notes that magnetic sensors can pick up metallic debris from semi-metallic pads and rotors, and that debris on the tip can corrupt the signal enough for the ABS module to set a code. A sensor can also fail internally, crack, or corrode in its bore.
2. Wiring and connector damage
The wheel speed sensor harness lives in the wheel well, where it flexes with the suspension and gets hit with water and road salt. A chafed wire or a corroded connector gives the same code as a dead sensor. Inspect the full length of the harness before buying a part.
3. Tone ring or hub bearing problems
The sensor reads a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the wheel. The air gap between the sensor tip and that ring is critical: too much clearance gives a weak or erratic signal, or none at all. A worn wheel bearing lets the hub move and changes that gap, and a single damaged tooth on the ring can disrupt the signal. Where the sensor is built into the hub bearing assembly, the fix is the complete hub unit, and trade sources rank these hub units among the most commonly replaced ABS parts.
4. Low voltage or recent tire and brake work
Low system voltage from a weak battery or charging problem can set false ABS codes. Recent tire service is another clue: mismatched tire sizes, a badly underinflated tire, or a sensor wire pulled loose during a brake job can all trigger the light.
5. Low brake fluid
The owner manual explains that fluid in the reservoir drops slowly as pads wear and comes back up when new pads go in. A sharp drop means a leak. Either way, a low level triggers the CHECK BRAKE FLUID message, and it should never be ignored.
6. ABS module, pump or fuses
The STS fuse block has separate fuses labeled for the anti-lock brake pump and the anti-lock brake controller. A blown fuse will disable the system. Internal module or pump failures happen but are much less common than sensor and wiring faults, so rule those out first.
How to Diagnose It Step by Step
- Check the other lights. If the red brake warning light is on too, stop driving and inspect the base brakes first.
- Read the ABS codes. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS codes. Use a scan tool with ABS capability; the code will name the circuit and usually the wheel.
- Check battery and charging voltage before condemning any sensor.
- Inspect the sensor and harness at the flagged wheel. Look for chafed wires, corroded connectors, and debris on the sensor tip.
- Test the sensor. Trade guidance for passive sensors is to check resistance with the key off and check the AC output while spinning the wheel, comparing both to the factory specification for your car. A scan tool showing live wheel speeds on a road test is the fastest way to spot the one wheel that drops out.
- Check the wheel bearing for play or roughness at the same corner.
- Clear the codes and road test. If the code returns, you have confirmed the circuit.
Brake and Front End's advice is worth repeating: pulling a wheel speed sensor code does not mean you should immediately replace the sensor. Confirm the cause first or you will likely be doing the job twice.
What to Replace at the Same Time
ABS sensor work puts you at the wheel with the brakes exposed, so it is a good time to check the parts around it:
- Pads and rotors: If the pads are near the wear limit or the rotors are grooved or warped, replacing them now saves a second teardown. Our 2005-2008 Cadillac STS front and rear brake kit covers both axles, or browse brake pads and brake rotors separately.
- Hardware: Fresh clips and slide pin boots from a brake hardware kit keep pads from dragging.
- Hoses: The flexible hose sits right next to the sensor wire. If it is cracked or swollen, replace it with a new brake hose.
- Calipers: A sticking caliper that overheats a corner can cook nearby wiring. Replace seized units with new brake calipers.
For fluid, the 2007 STS owner manual calls for DOT-3 brake fluid and lists a brake fluid capacity of 1.0 liter. It states DOT-4 is also compatible, but if you switch to DOT-4, Cadillac recommends a full flush and refill every two years. Use fluid from a sealed container only.
How Hard Is the Job?
A wheel speed sensor swap is usually a moderate DIY job: lift the car, remove the wheel, unplug the connector, remove the retaining bolt, and clean the bore before installing the new sensor. Corrosion can seize the old sensor in its bore, which is the main thing that turns a quick job into a long one. A hub bearing replacement is more work and needs correct torque on the hub and axle fasteners; use the values in the factory service manual. Any job that opens the hydraulic system, such as replacing the ABS module or a brake hose, needs a correct bleed afterward, and some ABS units need a scan tool to cycle the valves during bleeding. If you do not have that capability, leave that part to a shop.
On recalls: we checked NHTSA's recall data for the 2006 STS and found campaigns for fuel system, throttle control and rear axle seal issues, but none for the ABS or brake system. Check your own VIN on nhtsa.gov, since recall coverage can vary by build.

Is it safe to drive a Cadillac STS with the ABS light on?
If only the ABS light is on and the red brake light is off, the base brakes still work, but wheels can lock in a hard stop and StabiliTrak may also be unavailable. Drive gently, leave extra room, and get it scanned soon. If the red brake light is on as well, stop driving.
Why are the ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak warnings all on at once?
All three systems depend on the same wheel speed signals. When one sensor or circuit fails, the module shuts down every function that needs that signal, so a single fault can trigger all three.
Will a new battery fix my ABS light?
Only if low voltage caused the fault. Low system voltage can set false ABS codes, so test the battery and charging system before replacing sensors. If the voltage is healthy, look elsewhere.
Can new brake pads or rotors cause an ABS light?
Yes, indirectly. A sensor wire pulled or pinched during a brake job, a sensor knocked out of position, or debris left on the sensor tip can all set a code. Recheck the sensor and harness at any wheel that was just serviced.
What brake fluid does the STS use?
The 2007 STS owner manual specifies DOT-3 brake fluid and says DOT-4 is compatible. If you use DOT-4, Cadillac recommends flushing and refilling the system every two years.
