2016-2019 Cadillac ATS-V Brake Caliper Problems and Replacement

Cadillac ATS-V Brembo brake caliper problems and replacement guide

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

The 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS-V stops with Brembo fixed calipers: six pistons up front and four at the rear, all in aluminum. These calipers rarely fail outright. When they do cause trouble, it is almost always sticking or seeping pistons, heat-damaged seals, tired fluid after track days, or pads worn unevenly across the piston bank. Most problems can be fixed with a rebuild, fresh fluid and the right pads rather than a new caliper.

How the ATS-V Brake System Is Built

The ATS-V does not share the brakes of the regular ATS. According to Brembo's published specifications for the 2016 ATS-V, the car uses monobloc aluminum six-piston calipers on the front and four-piston aluminum calipers (Brembo's P4.30 model) on the rear. They are fixed calipers: the body is bolted solid and pistons push from both sides of the rotor. Nothing slides on pins the way it does on a typical single-piston floating caliper.

Item Front Rear
Caliper 6-piston monobloc, aluminum, fixed 4-piston (P4.30), aluminum, fixed
Rotor 370 mm x 34 mm two-piece (aluminum hat, cast-iron ring), curved vanes 339 mm x 26 mm one-piece, pillar-post vanes
Pad area (per pad) 115 sq cm, low-metallic 44 sq cm, low-metallic
Extra feature Pull-back pad design to reduce drag Pull-back pad design to reduce drag

Brembo says the two-piece front rotor saves 10 to 15 percent of the weight of a one-piece rotor. For a caliper diagnosis, the important parts are the fixed design, the number of pistons, and the aluminum body. Aluminum sheds heat well and does not rust like iron, but it is softer. Threads, bleeder seats and piston bores need more care than on a cast-iron floating caliper.

The ATS family also has an electronic parking brake. Brake and Front End's service article on the ATS describes an electronic module with an internal motor, apply and release actuators, and a temperature sensor. Before you do rear brake work, check the factory procedure for putting the parking brake into service mode. Forcing rear pistons back against the parking brake mechanism is a common way to damage parts.

Common ATS-V Caliper Problems and Their Symptoms

There has been no NHTSA safety recall for brake components on the 2016-2019 ATS-V. NHTSA's recall database lists no ATS-V brake campaigns for those model years. Caliper trouble on these cars comes from wear, heat and age, not a factory defect. The usual patterns:

  • Sticking or slow-returning pistons. Symptoms: the car pulls to one side, one wheel is much hotter than the other after a drive, there is a burning smell, or brake dust piles up on one wheel. With six pistons per front caliper, one lazy piston can leave a tapered pad instead of a full seizure.
  • Tapered or uneven pad wear. On a fixed caliper, the inner and outer pads can wear at different rates, or one end of a pad can wear more than the other. Brembo lists abnormal and early pad and rotor wear as a sign that a caliper's internal parts are worn.
  • Fluid seepage at a piston or crossover. Look for wetness at the dust boots, the bleeder or the fluid transfer points, plus a dropping reservoir level or a soft pedal. Any leak means the car should not be driven until it is fixed.
  • Spongy or long pedal after hard use. This is usually boiled or water-contaminated fluid, not a bad caliper. See the fluid section below before you replace hardware.
  • Torn or hardened dust boots. Heat cycles harden rubber. A split boot lets water and grit reach the piston, and that leads to corrosion and sticking later.
  • Squeal or groan from the pads. On the ATS performance brake package, Brake and Front End recommends moly lubricant only on the pad ears and edges, never on the pad backing.

What Causes Caliper Trouble on This Car

Brembo's technical guidance lists the main enemies of caliper internals as road salt and harsh chemical cleaners, which attack both rubber and metal parts. Piston seals have several jobs at once: they keep fluid in, pull the piston back slightly when you release the pedal, and adjust as the pads wear. All of that happens under hydraulic pressure and big temperature swings. When a seal hardens or corrosion builds up behind it, the piston stops retracting cleanly. That causes drag, heat and uneven pad wear.

Heat is the other major cause on an ATS-V, and track days make it worse. Hot calipers speed up seal aging and cook the brake fluid. Wheel cleaners sprayed on hot brakes and winter salt also shorten caliper life on cars driven all year.

Brake Fluid Matters More Than Most Owners Think

GM Service Bulletin PIC6162D covers the ATS-V (2016-2019) along with other high-performance GM models. It says street use calls for the standard fluid listed in the owner's manual, DOT 3 or DOT 4. For racing or competitive driving, GM recommends replacing the fluid with a high-performance fluid that has a dry boiling point greater than 534 F (279 C). GM also recommends flushing that fluid back out before the car returns to regular road use. The bulletin says never to use silicone or DOT 5 fluid, because it is not compatible with DOT 3/4 fluid or the system itself.

A pedal that goes soft after a hot session and firms up once things cool down points to fluid, not the caliper. Bleed or flush before you condemn any hardware. Old, water-laden fluid also corrodes the piston bores from the inside, so regular fluid service protects the calipers too.

The Fix: Rebuild, Replace, or Just Pads

Match the repair to what you actually find:

  1. Pads only. If every piston moves freely, the boots are intact and nothing is wet, fresh pads (and rotors, if they are at their limit) are the whole job. Our brake pads collection covers street replacements. Track-focused owners can look at the EBC SR-21 sintered race front pads for the ATS-V or the EBC SR-11 sintered race front pad set. Both are made for this car's six-piston front calipers.
  2. Seal and boot rebuild. If a piston is sticky or a boot is torn but the bore is clean, rebuild the caliper. Brembo sells repair kits with pistons, sealing rings and dust covers so worn parts can be replaced without a whole new caliper. Rebuild a fixed caliper as a full set: all pistons, all seals, all boots.
  3. Caliper replacement. If a bore is pitted, a piston is scored, threads are damaged, or the caliper body is cracked or leaking from the body itself, replace it. Browse brake calipers and confirm the part is listed for the ATS-V specifically. Calipers from the regular ATS will not fit the V's larger rotors.

What to Replace at the Same Time

  • Brake fluid. Any caliper that has been opened needs a full bleed. Most owners flush the whole system while they are at it.
  • Pads on both sides of the axle. Pads contaminated by fluid can't be saved. Replace pads as an axle set.
  • Rotors if they are near the limit. Brake and Front End notes that ATS rotors use ferritic nitro-carburizing (FNC) treatment to resist corrosion. It lists a lateral runout over 0.080 mm (0.003 in) or thickness variation over 0.025 mm (0.001 in) as reasons to machine or replace. See brake rotors.
  • Flex hoses. Old rubber hoses can collapse inside and hold pressure on a caliper so it drags. If the car has a lot of miles, look at brake hoses, or brake lines if you want a firmer pedal feel.
  • New fasteners where the manual calls for them. Brake and Front End notes that GM uses torque-to-yield caliper bracket bolts on the ATS platform. They must go in clean and dry and must never be reused. Check the factory service manual for your ATS-V's exact fasteners and torque specs before you reassemble anything.

How Hard Is the Job?

Changing pads on the ATS-V's fixed calipers is easier than on many cars. The pads usually come out after you remove the retaining pins or clips, and the caliper can stay on the car. Rebuilding a six-piston caliper is a different job. It takes a clean bench, a careful piston-removal method, patience to seat each new seal without twisting it, and a thorough bleed. Retracting the rear pistons also means working around the electronic parking brake. A confident home mechanic can handle pads and fluid. Rebuilds and caliper replacement on an aluminum monobloc are good jobs to hand to a shop that works on performance brakes, especially if the car is tracked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are there any caliper recalls on the 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS-V?

NHTSA's recall database lists no brake-related safety recalls for the 2016, 2017, 2018 or 2019 ATS-V. Caliper problems on these cars come from wear, heat and age, not a factory campaign. Check your own VIN on nhtsa.gov to be sure.

Can I put regular ATS brake parts on an ATS-V?

Not the calipers or rotors. The ATS-V uses six-piston front and four-piston rear Brembo calipers with larger rotors, so its parts are different from the regular ATS brake packages. Always match parts to the ATS-V by name.

Can an ATS-V Brembo caliper be rebuilt?

Yes, as long as the bores are not pitted or damaged. Brembo sells repair kits with seals, dust boots and pistons. Rebuild every piston in the caliper at the same time, not just the one that sticks.

Why does my brake pedal get soft after a track day?

Usually the fluid is boiling. GM's bulletin for the ATS-V recommends a high-performance fluid with a dry boiling point above 534 F for competitive driving, then flushing back to the owner's manual fluid for the street. Never use DOT 5 silicone fluid.

Why are my ATS-V pads wearing at an angle?

Tapered wear on a fixed caliper usually means one or more pistons are slow to move or retract. Clean and check each piston. If some are stiffer than others, rebuild the caliper before you install new pads, or the new pads will wear the same way.
