An amber ABS light on a 2016-2019 Cadillac ATS-V means the antilock control system has found a fault and switched antilock braking off. If the ABS light is the only light on, GM says the car still has normal brakes but no antilock function; if the red brake system warning light is on at the same time, there is also a problem with the regular brakes and the car should be inspected right away. On this car the usual root causes are a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, a damaged encoder, low system voltage, or a hydraulic problem such as low brake fluid.
How the ABS Works on the ATS-V
The ATS-V uses a Brembo brake package: six-piston front calipers on 14.5-inch front rotors and four-piston rear calipers on 13.3-inch rear rotors. Those big fixed calipers do the clamping, but the antilock side is electronic. A sensor at each wheel reads wheel speed, and the ABS computer compares all four. If one wheel is about to stop rolling during hard braking, the system works the brake pressure at that wheel separately, faster than any driver could.
The same wheel speed signals feed more than ABS on this car. Cadillac's Performance Traction Management (PTM) combines control of the electronic limited-slip differential, Magnetic Ride Control and the Brembo brakes, with five driver-selectable settings for stability, traction control and antilock braking. That matters for diagnosis: a single bad wheel speed signal often turns on the ABS light together with the traction control or StabiliTrak warnings, because every one of those systems depends on the same data.
Modern wheel speed sensors are active Hall-effect sensors. They read the changing magnetic field of a rotating encoder (either a multipole magnetic ring or a toothed steel wheel) and send a pulse signal that tracks wheel speed, down to nearly a standstill. Anything that interrupts that signal, from a cracked wire to debris on the encoder, can set an ABS fault.
What the Dash Lights Are Telling You
The owner's manual describes a startup check: the ABS light should come on briefly when the engine starts and then go out. As the car begins to drive away, ABS checks itself, and you may hear a brief motor or clicking noise and feel the pedal move slightly. That is normal. What each light combination means:
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | Regular brakes work, antilock does not | Drive gently and have it scanned soon |
| ABS light plus red brake light | No antilock and a problem with the regular brakes | Stop driving; check fluid and have it serviced |
| ABS light plus traction / StabiliTrak lights | Usually a shared input such as a wheel speed signal | Scan for the wheel-specific code |
| ABS light never comes on at startup | Bulb or circuit fault; the warning cannot work | Have the circuit repaired |
| "SERVICE BRAKE ASSIST" message | A problem with the brake boost assist system | Dealer or qualified shop service |
GM's advice when the ABS light comes on while driving: stop as soon as it is safe, turn the vehicle off, then restart the engine to reset the system. If the light stays on or comes back, the car needs service. If the red brake light is still on after you pull over and stop carefully, GM says to have the car towed rather than driven.
Common Causes of an ATS-V ABS Light
Wheel speed sensor or wiring
This is the most frequent cause on any modern car, and the ATS-V is no exception. The sensor lives at the hub, exposed to heat, road salt and water. Wires chafe against suspension parts, connectors corrode, and a sensor can fail internally. A scan tool will normally store a code that names the exact corner, which keeps the diagnosis short.
Damaged or contaminated encoder
The sensor reads a magnetic encoder that turns with the wheel. Rust scale, metal debris or physical damage to that ring gives the sensor a noisy or missing signal. This often shows up after hub, bearing or brake work where the encoder was bumped or contaminated.
Recent brake or suspension work
Pulling calipers and rotors on a car with Brembo fixed calipers means working right next to the sensor harness. A connector left unplugged, a wire pinched under a bracket, or a harness stretched when a knuckle was left hanging without support are common reasons the light appears right after a brake job.
Low brake fluid
The ATS-V manual states that when brake fluid falls to a low level, the brake warning light comes on. GM also names only two reasons the level drops: normal lining wear or a leak. If you see both the red brake light and the ABS light, check the reservoir level before anything else, and do not simply top it off without finding out why it dropped.
Low or unstable system voltage
The ABS computer and pump motor need steady voltage. A weak battery, poor ground or failing charging system can make the system log faults and turn the light on, especially at startup. Test the battery and charging system before condemning expensive parts.
ABS module or hydraulic unit
Internal faults in the control module or hydraulic modulator are less common and should be diagnosed only after the sensors, wiring, fluid and voltage check out. A replacement module normally needs dealer-level programming.
How to Diagnose It Step by Step
- Note which lights are on together: ABS alone, ABS with the red brake light, or ABS with traction and stability warnings.
- Check the brake fluid level on a level surface. It should sit between the minimum and maximum marks.
- Restart the car as the manual describes and see whether the light returns right away or only once the car is moving. A speed sensor fault often appears only after the car starts to roll.
- Scan the ABS module with a tool that reads chassis codes. A basic reader that only sees engine faults will not show ABS codes.
- For a wheel speed code, inspect that corner: the sensor connector, the harness along the knuckle and suspension, and the encoder surface.
- Use live data to compare all four wheel speeds on a slow drive. A wheel that drops out or reads erratically points to the sensor, wiring or encoder at that corner.
- Test battery and charging voltage if the codes point to voltage or show several unrelated faults.
The Fix, and What to Replace at the Same Time
Most ATS-V ABS lights are fixed at one corner: a new wheel speed sensor, a repaired harness or connector, or a cleaned or replaced encoder. Codes usually clear once the fault is repaired and the car is driven, or they can be cleared with a scan tool. If the fault was tied to low fluid, the leak or the pad wear behind it is the real repair.
If you are into the brakes to reach a sensor, it is a good time to check pad thickness and rotor condition. Pads and rotors do not usually cause an ABS light by themselves, but the job puts your hands right on them. Browse brake pads, brake rotors and brake hardware kits for the parts you need.
For ATS-V owners who take the car to the track, we carry two EBC sintered race pads made for the front Brembo calipers: the EBC SR-21 sintered race front brake pads for the ATS-V and the EBC SR-11 sintered race front brake pad set for the ATS-V. These are race compounds built for track use, so read the product details and match the compound to how you drive before choosing them for the street.
On brake fluid, the manual calls for GM approved DOT 3 fluid from a clean, sealed container, as marked on the reservoir cap. GM warns that the wrong or contaminated fluid can damage the brake system. Brake fluid absorbs water over time, so replace it at the maintenance schedule interval; hard track use makes that even more important.
How Hard Is the Job?
Reading codes and checking fluid are simple owner jobs. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is moderate: it mounts at the hub, but corrosion can make removal stubborn, and the harness must be routed back exactly as it was so it does not rub a moving part. Anything involving the ABS module or hydraulic unit, or bleeding the system after hydraulic work, is shop work because it may need a scan tool to cycle the ABS valves. When you reinstall calipers or wheels, torque fasteners to the values in the factory service manual.

Is it safe to drive a Cadillac ATS-V with the ABS light on?
If the ABS light is the only light on, GM says the car still has regular brakes but no antilock function. Drive carefully, leave extra stopping room, and get it checked soon. If the red brake warning light is also on, do not keep driving it; have the brake system inspected.
Why are my ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak lights all on at once?
Those systems share the same wheel speed data. When one wheel speed signal drops out, the car disables the systems that rely on it and lights the related warnings. One bad sensor or wire is the usual reason.
Can new brake pads or rotors turn on the ABS light?
Not by themselves. The light usually appears after a brake job because a sensor connector was left unplugged, a wire was pinched or stretched, or the encoder was damaged or contaminated during the work.
Will the ABS light reset itself?
GM advises stopping, turning the car off and restarting to reset the system. An intermittent fault may let the light stay off for a while, but if it stays on or returns while driving, the car needs service and the stored code will point to the cause.
What brake fluid does the ATS-V use?
The owner's manual specifies GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container, as indicated on the reservoir cap.
