An ABS light on a 2013-2018 Cadillac ATS almost always means the ABS control module has logged a fault and switched antilock braking off. On its own, it leaves you with normal brakes but no antilock function; if the red brake warning light is on with it, there is also a problem with the base brakes and the car should be checked before it is driven further. The most common single cause is a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, and a scan tool that reads chassis (C) codes will tell you which corner to look at.
What the ABS Light Means on the ATS
Cadillac's owner's manual for the ATS is specific about how the light should behave. It comes on briefly when the engine starts and then goes out. If it comes on while driving, the manual says to stop when it is safe, turn the car off, and restart it to reset the system. If the light stays on, or returns while driving, the car needs service. A chime may also sound when the light comes on steady.
The manual also explains how to read the ABS light together with the red brake system warning light:
| What you see | What it means (per the ATS owner's manual) | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | Regular brakes work, antilock brakes are not functioning | Drive gently, leave extra following distance, diagnose soon |
| ABS light and red brake light | Antilock brakes are off and there is a problem with the regular brakes | Stop driving and have it inspected; tow if the red light stays on |
| Red brake light only | Brake problem such as low fluid or a hydraulic circuit issue | Check fluid level and look for leaks before driving |
| Amber parking brake light | Problem with the Electric Parking Brake or a related system | Car can be driven, but have it checked as soon as possible |
Because the ABS module shares wheel speed data with traction control and StabiliTrak, an ABS fault on the ATS usually brings the TCS/StabiliTrak light on too. The manual notes that when that light is on steady, traction control and potentially StabiliTrak have been disabled. Seeing all of them together is normal for a single wheel speed fault and does not mean several systems failed at once.
One thing that is not a fault: when you first drive away, the ATS runs an ABS self-check. The manual says you may hear a brief motor or clicking noise and feel the pedal move slightly during that test. That is normal and should not be confused with a problem.
Most Common Causes of an ABS Light on the Cadillac ATS
1. Wheel speed sensor or sensor wiring
The ABS module constantly compares the speed of all four wheels. If one sensor reads zero, drops out, or disagrees with the other three, the module sets a code and shuts ABS off. Sensors sit right at the wheel, where they see water, road salt, heat and brake dust, so the sensor, its connector and the harness running along the suspension are the most frequent failure points. Brake & Front End notes that magnetic sensors can pick up metallic debris from semi-metallic linings and rotors, which interferes with the signal, and that a damaged tone ring or wiring problem can do the same.
2. Tone ring or hub bearing problems
The sensor reads a toothed ring or magnetic encoder that turns with the wheel. Corrosion, cracked teeth, or a worn wheel bearing with excess play changes the signal. If the sensor itself tests good but the code keeps returning on the same corner, check the bearing and encoder next.
3. Low brake fluid
The ATS manual states there are only two reasons the fluid level drops: normal lining wear and a leak. Low fluid turns on the red brake warning light and may display a BRAKE FLUID LOW message. If the ABS and red lights are on together, check the reservoir first. Do not simply top it off: the manual warns that adding fluid does not correct a leak, and that adding fluid to worn linings leaves too much fluid once new linings are installed.
4. Low system voltage, fuses, relays and grounds
The ABS module needs clean power and a good ground to run its self-test. A weak battery, a charging problem, a blown fuse or a corroded ground can set ABS codes that disappear once the electrical issue is fixed. Brake & Front End stresses that proper ABS operation depends on the control unit being correctly grounded and getting the right operating power, so verify these before condemning expensive parts.
5. ABS module or hydraulic unit
An internal module fault or a pump motor problem is possible, but it is the least likely cause and the most expensive. Diagnose it only after sensors, wiring, voltage and fluid are confirmed good.
6. Non-matching tires
Cadillac warns that wheels or tires of a different size than original can affect the performance of antilock brakes, traction control and stability control, and that the correct size, brand and type of tire should be used on all four wheels. A mismatched or badly worn tire changes wheel speed enough to confuse the system.
How to Diagnose It
- Note which lights are on. ABS alone points toward a sensor or electrical fault. ABS plus the red brake light points toward fluid or hydraulics.
- Check the brake fluid level on a level surface. It should sit between the minimum and maximum marks on the reservoir.
- Restart the car. If the light clears and stays off, the fault may have been intermittent. If it returns, keep going.
- Read the codes with a scan tool that reads ABS (chassis) codes. A basic engine-code reader will not see them. The code will name the circuit and usually the wheel.
- Inspect the named corner. Look for a chafed harness, a loose or corroded connector, debris on the sensor tip, and play in the wheel bearing.
- Watch live wheel speed data while driving slowly. A sensor that reads zero or drops out while the others agree is the one to replace.
- Check battery and charging voltage if codes point to the module, supply voltage, or several sensors at once.
Active (Hall-type) sensors, which most modern cars use, cannot be tested with an ohmmeter because they contain electronics. Live data or an oscilloscope is the reliable test.
Recall to Check: 2015 Brake Pedal Bracket
NHTSA campaign 15V358000 covers certain 2015 Cadillac ATS and CTS vehicles. The bracket between the brake pedal assembly and the rod that actuates the brakes may fracture during normal pedal operation. This is not an ABS sensor fault, but any 2015 ATS with a brake complaint should have its VIN checked for this recall at nhtsa.gov and the repair confirmed by a dealer. The 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018 model years showed no brake-component recalls in NHTSA's recall data when we checked.
What to Replace at the Same Time
ABS repairs often happen with the wheel off, which is a good time to look at the rest of the corner:
- Pads and rotors. If the pads are low or the rotors are scored or pulsing, do them now instead of pulling the wheel twice. Our 2013-2018 Cadillac ATS front and rear brake kit covers base-brake cars, or browse brake pads and brake rotors separately.
- Hardware. Fresh clips from a brake hardware kit help keep the new pads from dragging or squealing.
- Hoses. A cracked or swollen hose near the sensor harness is worth replacing while you are there; see brake hoses.
- Brake fluid. The ATS maintenance schedule calls for replacing brake fluid every five years, using GM-approved DOT 3 fluid from a clean, sealed container as marked on the reservoir cap.
How Hard Is the Job?
Reading codes and checking fluid is driveway work. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate job: wheel off, unplug and unbolt the old sensor, and route the new harness through the original clips so it cannot rub on the tire or suspension. If the sensor or encoder is part of the hub bearing, the job becomes a hub replacement, which takes more tools and time and requires torquing the fasteners to the values in the factory service manual. Module or hydraulic unit replacement generally needs dealer-level software for setup and a proper bleed, so that is shop work for most owners.

Is it safe to drive a Cadillac ATS with the ABS light on?
If only the ABS light is on, Cadillac says the regular brakes still work but antilock braking is off, so the wheels can lock in a hard stop on wet or slick roads. Drive carefully and get it diagnosed soon. If the red brake light is on too, have it inspected before driving.
Why are my ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak lights all on at once?
Traction control and StabiliTrak rely on the same wheel speed data as ABS. When ABS sees a fault, those systems are typically disabled too, so the lights come on together. One wheel speed sensor fault is the usual reason.
Will new brake pads turn off the ABS light?
Not by themselves. Worn pads lower the fluid level, which can trigger the red brake light, but the ABS light is triggered by an electronic fault. The exception is when a brake job damages a sensor or harness, so check the wiring if the light came on right after brake work.
Can a weak battery cause an ABS light on the ATS?
Yes. The ABS module needs proper voltage and ground to pass its self-test. Low voltage can set codes that clear once the battery or charging system is fixed.
What brake fluid does the Cadillac ATS use?
The owner's manual specifies GM-approved DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container, as indicated on the reservoir cap, replaced every five years.
