Brembo brakes came from the factory on the 2015-2019 Mustang GT with the Performance Package: a six-piston Brembo front caliper clamping a 15-inch vented rotor. If your Mustang did not come with them, the same front system is sold as a bolt-on kit for 2015-2023 GT and 2.3L EcoBoost cars, and Brembo also makes a rear four-piston GT kit for the S550. Older Mustangs (1965-2014) are a different story, and the right upgrade there depends on generation and spindle type.
Where Brembo Fits on the Mustang From the Factory
Ford lists its 2015-2023 Mustang Performance Pack 6-Piston Front Brake Kit (part M-2300-V) as the original equipment brake on the 2015-2019 Mustang GT Performance Package. That tells you two useful things. First, if you own a 2015-2019 GT PP car, you already have Brembo fronts, and service is a matter of pads and rotors, not calipers. Second, a base GT or EcoBoost from the same generation can be brought up to that same OE hardware because Ford sells it as a kit.
Ford states the kit fits the 2015-2023 Mustang GT and the 2015-2023 Mustang 2.3L EcoBoost. It includes:
- Brembo six-piston aluminum calipers in satin black
- 15-inch vented front rotors
- Production brake pads and dust shields
- Installation hardware
- Front brake hoses, which Ford notes are for the 2.3L EcoBoost install only and are not used on 5.0L GT cars
The catch is wheels. Ford states the kit requires its Ford Performance wheels M-1007-M199B or an equivalent wheel for caliper clearance. A six-piston caliper over a 15-inch rotor takes up a lot of room inside the barrel, and a base-model wheel with a tight spoke profile will not clear it. Confirm your wheel before you order anything.
Servicing Factory Brembo Brakes on a 2015-2023 Mustang
If your car already has the Performance Package Brembo fronts, you do not replace the calipers when the brakes wear. You replace pads and rotors, and inspect the calipers for leaks, torn piston boots and sticking pistons. Ford publishes the service part numbers for this system:
| Component | Ford part | Motorcraft part |
|---|---|---|
| Front brake pads (PP Brembo) | FR3Z-2001-C | BRF1462 |
| Front rotor (15-inch, PP Brembo) | GR3Z-1125-L | BRRF246 |
Those numbers matter because pads for a base caliper will not fit the six-piston Brembo. Match the pad to the caliper on the car, not just to the model year. You can browse replacement brake pads and replacement brake rotors, and always check the fitment notes against your caliper.
Symptoms that tell you a Brembo-equipped Mustang is due for service:
- A pulsing pedal or steering wheel shake under braking, which usually points to uneven rotor thickness or pad material deposits
- Squealing from a pad wear indicator, or grinding if the pads are worn to the backing plate
- A pull to one side, which can mean a sticking piston in one caliper
- A soft or long pedal after track use, which usually means boiled or old brake fluid rather than a hardware failure
Adding Brembo Rear Brakes to an S550 Mustang
The factory Performance Package upgraded the front far more than the rear. For owners who track the car or who have already upsized the front, Brembo builds a Gran Turismo (GT) rear kit for the 2015-2023 Mustang. We carry the Brembo 2P2.9049A2 GT rear big brake kit for the 2015-2023 Mustang GT, V6 and EcoBoost, which uses four-piston calipers over 380 x 28 mm slotted two-piece rotors with red calipers.
Brembo describes every GT kit as a complete system: aluminum calipers with radial mounting and opposed pistons, upsized one-piece or composite discs engineered for the specific car, high-performance pads, braided stainless steel hoses, adapters and mounting hardware. Brembo says the opposed-piston design spreads force evenly across the pad for more uniform wear, and that its floating discs use an aluminum bell to cut unsprung weight.
A rear kit is not the first upgrade most street cars need. The front brakes do most of the stopping, so a rear kit makes the most sense once the front is already upgraded and you want the car to stay balanced and consistent through repeated hard stops. As with the front kit, check wheel clearance first, since a 380 mm rear rotor needs a large wheel.
Brembo GT Kit Families, Explained
Brembo sells its GT kits in several families, and the letters in the name tell you what kind of caliper you are getting. Per Brembo:
| GT family | Caliper construction | Intended use |
|---|---|---|
| GT A | Fixed two-piece caliper, 4, 6 or 8 pistons | Entry point for sharper response on the street |
| GT M | Monobloc, one-piece aluminum, 4 or 6 pistons | Road and track, stiffer and lighter |
| GT BM | Brembo Monoblocco cast with integrated fluid passages | Compact sports cars through supercars |
| GT S | Ventilated pistons, hard anodized finish | Road and track, high heat |
| GT R | Billet-machined monobloc, nickel coated | Maximum performance |
For a street Mustang, the difference between families is mostly stiffness, weight and heat tolerance. For a car that sees open track days, the monobloc and S-series calipers resist flex and heat better over a long session.
Upgrades for Older Mustangs (1965-2014)
Brembo was not factory equipment on most earlier Mustangs, and those cars are usually upgraded with purpose-built kits for their generation. The key facts to check are the spindle, the lug pattern and the minimum wheel size.
- 1965-1969 Mustang: Wilwood lists its DynaPro 6 front kit (140-12947) for both the factory disc spindle and the factory drum spindle, with a six-piston caliper, a 12.19-inch rotor and a 15-inch minimum wheel. The hub supports both 5 x 4.50 and 5 x 4.75 lug patterns. Wilwood notes a separate brake line kit is required. See the Wilwood DynaPro 6 front kit for the 1965-1969 Mustang.
- 1994-2004 Mustang (5-lug): Wilwood's Forged Narrow Superlite 6R kit (140-9107) uses a six-piston radial-mount caliper and a 12.88-inch two-piece rotor on a 5 x 4.50 hat, and needs a 17-inch minimum wheel. Wilwood states it is compatible with OE master cylinder output and ABS where used, and that a separate flexline kit is required. See the Wilwood Superlite 6R front kit for the 1994-2004 Mustang.
- 2005-2014 Mustang: Wilwood's 140-9109 kit pairs the same six-piston caliper with a 13.06-inch rotor on the factory disc spindle, again with a 17-inch minimum wheel and a separate line kit. See the Wilwood front kit for the 2005-2014 Mustang.
The 1994-2004 kits above are for 5-lug cars only, so confirm your lug count before ordering. If you are refreshing a stock system rather than upgrading, standard replacement brake calipers and brake lines are the simpler path.
What to Replace at the Same Time, and How Hard the Job Is
A bolt-on front kit on a modern Mustang is a reasonable job for an experienced home mechanic with jack stands, a torque wrench and a bleeding setup. Plan for these at the same time:
- Fresh brake fluid. Opening the system means a full bleed. Use the fluid type printed on your master cylinder cap or in the owner manual.
- Brake lines. Several kits above require a separate line kit, while Brembo GT kits include braided stainless hoses.
- Wheels. Every kit here has a minimum wheel size or a named wheel requirement. Verify with the manufacturer's clearance template before install.
- Pad bed-in. Follow the pad maker's bedding procedure before hard use.
Torque caliper, bracket and lug fasteners to the values in the kit instructions or the factory service manual, and do not reuse hardware the instructions say to replace.

Frequently Asked Questions
Did my Mustang come with Brembo brakes?
Ford lists the six-piston Brembo front system as original equipment on the 2015-2019 Mustang GT Performance Package. A 2015-2023 GT or EcoBoost without that package has a different front caliper.
Can I put Performance Pack Brembos on a base Mustang GT or EcoBoost?
Yes. Ford sells the kit for 2015-2023 GT and 2.3L EcoBoost cars. It requires Ford Performance wheels M-1007-M199B or an equivalent wheel for caliper clearance, and the EcoBoost install uses the brake hoses included in the kit.
Will my stock wheels clear a big brake kit?
Often not. Every kit in this guide lists a minimum wheel size or a required wheel, and Wilwood provides clearance diagrams. Check your wheel against the template before ordering.
Do I need rear big brakes if I upgraded the front?
For street driving, usually not. A rear kit like the Brembo GT rear makes the most sense on a car that sees track days and already has upgraded front brakes.
Which pads fit Performance Pack Brembo calipers?
Ford lists service pad FR3Z-2001-C, Motorcraft BRF1462, for this system. Match the pad to the caliper on your car, since base and Performance Package calipers use different pads.
