On a 2009-2017 Audi A4, an ABS warning light almost always traces back to a wheel speed signal the ABS control module does not trust: a dirty or greasy sensor and sensor ring, a damaged wire, or a failed sensor. Audi has published service bulletins for exactly these faults on the A4, including a known wiring problem at the left front bulkhead grommet on 2009-2014 cars. The good news is that most of these fixes are inexpensive once the fault code points you to the right wheel.
How the ABS System Reads Your A4's Wheels
Each wheel on the A4 has a wheel speed sensor aimed at a sensor ring (encoder) built into the wheel bearing. Bosch, a major supplier of these sensors, describes the modern design as an active Hall-effect sensor: the sensing element, signal amplifier and processing circuit sit on a single chip that reads the changing magnetic field of the rotating encoder and outputs a digital signal whose frequency tracks wheel speed. Bosch states these sensors can detect speeds as low as 0.1 km/h.
The ABS control module (Audi calls it J104) compares all four signals continuously. If one wheel reports a speed that does not make sense against the other three, or a circuit reads open or shorted, the module stores a trouble code, switches ABS off and lights the ABS warning. Because the stability control system uses the same wheel speed data, the ESC light usually comes on with it. Your normal brakes still work, but the anti-lock and stability functions do not, so the car should be diagnosed promptly rather than driven indefinitely with the light on.
Cause 1: Dirt, Grease or Debris on the Sensor or Sensor Ring
Audi Technical Service Bulletin 2072304, which covers all Audi vehicles from 2010 onward, addresses an ABS warning (or a TPMS warning with no actual pressure loss) caused by an implausible signal from a wheel speed sensor. Audi's explanation: when dirt, foreign objects or grease settle around an ABS speed sensor or on the sensor ring of the wheel bearing, the signal is distorted and the control module rejects it.
Audi's prescribed fix is simple: inspect the sensors and the sensor rings on the wheel bearings carefully, clean every dirty component, then erase the codes. Only if nothing is found does the bulletin send the technician into guided fault finding. This is the first thing to check after any brake or suspension work on an A4, because the sensor sits right next to the hub where brake dust, rust scale and wheel bearing grease collect.
The TPMS symptom is a useful clue. If your A4 throws a tire pressure warning with correctly inflated tires at the same time as the ABS light, a distorted wheel speed signal is a strong suspect, since Audi links the two in the same bulletin.
Cause 2: Damaged Wiring at the Left Front Grommet (2009-2014)
This is the A4-specific one. Audi bulletin 2033412 (first published March 2013, revised in September 2013 and February 2014) covers the 2009-2014 A4 and S4 along with the A5, S5 and Q5 built on the same platform. According to Audi, the insulation on the ABS wheel speed sensor wires was damaged in production. Over time the exposed wire corrodes, which restricts the ABS control module. Only the wires in the left bulkhead grommet, behind the left front fender, are affected.
The symptoms are broader than a single ABS light, which confuses a lot of owners:
- ABS light plus several other warnings at once. Audi's revised bulletin title lists EPB (electronic parking brake), TPMS, EPC and the check engine light.
- The steering wheel does not lock, or steering feels stiffer than usual.
- The engine will not switch off, or the key cannot be removed.
- Codes such as 01316, U012100 or U012200 (brake control module no communication) in several modules, or 00290 and 00283 for the left rear (G46) and left front (G47) wheel speed sensors.
Audi notes the condition does not create a drivability problem and the steering system remains fully connected. For communication faults, the bulletin has the technician perform a voltage drop test on the ABS module's power supply under load; a drop of more than 0.3 V sends them to inspect the wiring loom around the grommet, which requires removing the wheel arch liner and washer fluid reservoir for access. If your A4 has this multi-light pattern, have a shop inspect the harness at the grommet before replacing any sensors.
Cause 3: A Failed Wheel Speed Sensor or Bad Connector Crimp
Sensors do fail on their own, especially the fronts, which live in the harshest spot on the car. A code for a specific wheel that reads as an open or short circuit, and returns immediately after clearing, points to the sensor or its connector.
For the 2017 model year A4 (the first U.S. year of the redesigned car), Audi bulletin 2061331 covers an ABS light with codes C050200 or C050800, front left or front right wheel speed sensor short to ground. The cause was a wire not properly crimped to the pin in the front speed sensor connector. The fix replaces the front harness that carries both the wheel speed sensor and the brake pad wear indicator wiring. That shared harness is worth remembering: anyone replacing front pads on these cars should route and clip the wear sensor and speed sensor wiring exactly as it came out.
Cause 4: Worn Wheel Bearings and Damaged Sensor Rings
On the A4 the sensor ring is part of the wheel bearing. AA1Car's ABS diagnostic guide explains that a worn bearing lets the gap between sensor and ring change as the wheel turns, which distorts the signal and sets codes. Missing, broken or chipped teeth on a tone ring do the same thing; the guide notes that even a variation of about .010 inch in tooth height can cause noticeable signal fluctuation. If the ABS code keeps coming back on one wheel and that wheel also hums, growls or has play, the bearing is the real repair.
How to Diagnose It Step by Step
- Read the codes with a scan tool that reads the ABS module. A basic engine-code reader will not see ABS codes. The code tells you which wheel and whether it is a signal (plausibility) fault or an electrical fault.
- Note every warning light that is on. ABS plus EPB, TPMS, EPC and check engine together on a 2009-2014 car points to the left grommet wiring bulletin. ABS and ESC alone points to one wheel.
- Inspect and clean. Remove the wheel, check the sensor tip and the bearing's sensor ring for grease, dirt and debris, and clean them as Audi's bulletin directs. Check the harness for chafing near the strut and hub.
- Test the sensor properly. The A4 uses active sensors. AA1Car points out that active sensors cannot be judged by a resistance reading the way older passive sensors can; the correct test is confirming the sensor has power and then checking for a digital square-wave signal while the wheel turns, typically with a scan tool live-data view or an oscilloscope.
- Check the bearing. Grab the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock it; listen for bearing noise on a road test.
- Clear the codes and road test. The light will not go out until the module sees good signals again, and some faults only reset after the car is driven.
| Symptom pattern | Most likely cause | Typical fix |
|---|---|---|
| ABS + TPMS warning, tires correctly inflated | Dirty sensor or sensor ring | Clean sensor and ring, clear codes |
| ABS + EPB, EPC, check engine, steering lock issues (2009-2014) | Damaged wiring at left bulkhead grommet | Harness inspection and repair per Audi bulletin |
| ABS + ESC, one wheel electrical code | Failed sensor, chafed wire or bad crimp | Replace sensor or repair harness |
| ABS code on one wheel plus bearing noise or play | Worn bearing or damaged sensor ring | Replace wheel bearing |
What to Do While You Are in There
Many A4 ABS faults show up right after a brake job, when a sensor wire gets pulled, a connector is left loose, or grease and debris end up on the sensor ring. If you are replacing pads and rotors, clean the hub face and sensor area, keep grease off the sensor ring, and re-clip every wire. On the 2017 car, remember the front speed sensor and pad wear indicator share a harness.
If your A4 is due for front brakes at the same time, the 2009-2017 Audi A4 front ceramic brake pads from Bosch are listed to fit this generation, and you can browse more options in our brake pads and brake rotors collections. Is it safe to drive my Audi A4 with the ABS light on?
Your regular hydraulic brakes still work, but anti-lock braking and stability control are disabled, so the wheels can lock in a hard stop on a slippery road. Drive gently and get it diagnosed soon. If the red brake warning light is also on, stop driving and have the brakes inspected.
Why did the ABS light come on right after new brakes?
The most common reasons are a wheel speed sensor or wear sensor wire that was pulled or left unclipped, a loose connector, or grease and debris on the sensor ring. Audi's own bulletin says dirt and grease on the sensor or ring can create an implausible signal.
Why are my ABS, parking brake and check engine lights all on at once?
On 2009-2014 A4 models, Audi documented damaged wheel speed sensor wiring at the left front bulkhead grommet that can trigger ABS, EPB, TPMS, EPC and check engine warnings together, and sometimes steering lock or key removal problems.
Can a bad wheel bearing turn on the ABS light?
Yes. The sensor ring is part of the bearing on this car, and a worn bearing changes the sensor gap as the wheel turns, which distorts the signal.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?
If the fault is still present the light returns as soon as the module checks the sensors again. Fix the cause, then clear the codes with a scan tool that can access the ABS module.
