Brake caliper trouble on a 2020-2024 Mercedes-Benz GLE350 usually shows up as a pull to one side, one wheel running much hotter than the others, uneven pad wear, or a brake fluid leak at a wheel. We found no NHTSA recall covering the calipers on these model years, so a failing caliper is a normal wear-and-corrosion repair. The GLE also has an electric parking brake, which changes how a rear caliper or pad job has to be done.

How the Calipers Work on the GLE350

A caliper turns hydraulic pressure from the master cylinder into clamping force on the rotor. According to Brembo's caliper technology guide, there are two basic designs. A floating (sliding) caliper has one or two pistons on one side and slides on guides so the opposite pad is pulled against the rotor. A fixed caliper is bolted rigidly in place and uses opposed pistons on both sides of the rotor. Which type a given GLE350 has depends on its brake package, so check the caliper itself or look the part up by VIN before ordering.

Inside either type, the parts that decide how long a caliper lives are the same: the piston, the piston seal that also pulls the piston back after each stop, the dust boot that keeps water and grit off the piston, the bleed screw, and on a floating caliper the guide pins and their boots. Brembo notes that caliper seals work at pressures up to 350 bar, so a little corrosion or a torn boot has an outsized effect on how freely the piston moves.

The Mercedes-Benz owner's manual for the V167 GLE describes the electric parking brake as a push-to-apply, pull-to-release control with a red indicator lamp that must stay lit continuously for the brake to be securely applied. On electric parking brake systems the rear calipers typically carry an actuator motor, so a rear caliper on this SUV is more than a hydraulic part - it has to be retracted electronically before service.

Symptoms of a Failing Caliper

  • Pull under braking or while cruising. A piston or slide pin that sticks keeps one pad dragging, so the SUV pulls toward that wheel.
  • One hot wheel and a brake smell. After a drive, a dragging brake leaves that wheel noticeably hotter than the others, sometimes with a burning odor or heavy dust on one rim.
  • Uneven pad wear. An inner pad worn far thinner than the outer pad on the same wheel points to slide pins that are not letting the caliper float. Brembo lists early and abnormal pad and rotor wear, residual drag and rotor overheating as results of deteriorated guide pins.
  • Fluid at the wheel or a falling reservoir. A leaking piston seal or bleed screw puts fluid on the inside of the wheel and tire. The GLE's "Check brake fluid level" message warns that braking effect may be impaired; the manual says to stop as soon as it is safe, not to top up the fluid, and to have the vehicle checked by a qualified specialist workshop.
  • Parking brake warnings. A yellow parking brake lamp, or a red lamp that flashes, means the electric parking brake could not apply or release correctly. The manual's first step is to switch the vehicle off and back on and retry manually; if the brake still will not release, do not continue driving.
  • Soft or long pedal. Air or fluid loss at a caliper can make the pedal feel spongy.

Diagnosing It Before You Buy Parts

Not every pull is a caliper. Rule out the common look-alikes first:

Symptom Caliper cause Other likely cause
Pull to one side Stuck piston or seized slide pin Tire pressure, alignment, a collapsed brake hose; on some 2020-2021 models, ESP software recall 21V071000
One wheel hot Dragging piston or pin Parking brake not fully released
Inner pad worn more Slide pins not moving Pad seized in its bracket from rust
Fluid on the wheel Piston seal or bleed screw leak Brake hose or line leak
"Check brake pads" message Fast wear from a sticking caliper Normal pad wear to the limit

That recall matters here. NHTSA campaign 21V071000 covers certain 2020-2021 GLE350 and GLE450 vehicles (plus some 2020 GLS450, GLE580 and GLS580) whose Electronic Stability Program software could apply torque to one front wheel during certain evasive maneuvers and pull the vehicle to one side. Dealers update the ESP software free of charge. Run your VIN on NHTSA's site before assuming a pull is mechanical.

A basic hands-on check: with the SUV safely on stands and the parking brake released, spin each wheel by hand. A wheel that drags hard compared with its partner on the same axle is the suspect. Then look for a torn dust boot, rust around the piston, wet fluid on the caliper body, and slide pins that will not move freely once the caliper is off.

Why GLE350 Calipers Fail

  • Moisture in the brake fluid. Brake fluid picks up contaminants and water over time, which corrodes pistons and bores from the inside. Mercedes-Benz includes a brake fluid exchange in Service B, which works out to about every 2 years or 20,000 miles for owners who follow the A/B service plan.
  • Road salt and harsh cleaners. Brembo points to road salt and the chemical degreasers used when washing a vehicle as the main reasons caliper internals deteriorate over the years.
  • Torn dust boots. Once a boot splits, water reaches the piston and corrosion follows.
  • Dry or seized guide pins. Pins that were never cleaned and greased during pad changes stick, and the caliper stops floating.
  • Long periods parked. An SUV that sits, especially in a humid climate, can have pads rust to the rotor or pistons stick in their bores.

The Fix: Repair or Replace, and What to Replace With It

If only the slide pins or boots are bad, a caliper hardware or repair kit is often enough. Brembo's repair kits cover guide pins and their rubber parts, pistons, and piston seals with dust covers, and Brembo recommends cleaning and lubricating slide pins with a dedicated grease and checking pistons and seals during brake service. If the piston is pitted, the bore is corroded, or the caliper leaks, replace the caliper. Our brake calipers and brake hardware kits cover both routes.

A caliper that has been dragging has almost always overheated the pads and often the rotor, so plan on replacing more than the caliper:

  • Pads on both sides of the axle. Always replace pads as an axle set so braking stays even. For the rear of the GLE350 we carry Bosch rear ceramic brake pads for the 2020-2024 GLE350 and Bendix rear ceramic brake pads for the 2020-2024 GLE350.
  • Rotors if they are blued, scored, or below the minimum thickness cast into them. See our brake rotors.
  • Pad wear sensor. The GLE warns with a "Check brake pads" message when the pads reach the wear limit; a sensor that has worn through should be replaced with the pads.
  • Brake hose if it is cracked or swollen. A collapsed hose can mimic a stuck caliper. Browse brake hoses.
  • Brake fluid. After opening the system, bleed it with fresh fluid of the type specified on the reservoir cap or in the owner's manual.

How Hard Is the Job on a GLE350?

A front caliper swap is a moderate job for an experienced DIYer: remove the wheel, pads and caliper, fit new hardware, reconnect the hose with new sealing washers where used, torque the bolts to the values in the factory service manual, and bleed the system. The GLE is a heavy SUV, so use the correct lift points and stands rated for its weight.

The rear is where the electric parking brake adds steps. The rear piston should not be forced back with a clamp while the parking brake actuator is engaged. A scan tool with a Mercedes electric parking brake service function is used to retract the actuators before the pads or caliper come off, and to close and recalibrate the system afterward. Skipping this can damage the actuator or leave parking brake warnings on the dash. If you do not have that capability, have a shop handle the rear axle.

After any caliper job, pump the pedal until it is firm before moving the vehicle, confirm the parking brake applies and releases with the red lamp behaving normally, and bed in the new pads with a series of moderate stops.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a recall for brake calipers on the 2020-2024 GLE350?

We found no NHTSA recall covering the calipers on 2020-2024 GLE350 models. The closest related campaign is ESP software recall 21V071000 for certain 2020-2021 GLE350 and GLE450 vehicles, which can cause a pull during evasive maneuvers. Check your VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup.

Can I drive with a sticking caliper?

Only far enough to get it fixed. A dragging brake overheats the pads, rotor and fluid, and that heat reduces braking performance. If the vehicle shows a brake fluid level warning or the parking brake will not release, the owner's manual says not to continue driving.

Should I replace calipers in pairs?

On a high-mileage vehicle, or when both sides show corrosion, replacing calipers as an axle pair keeps both sides applying evenly. A single failed caliper on a newer vehicle can be replaced on its own, but pads are always replaced as an axle set.

Do I need a scan tool to change rear brakes on a GLE350?

In practice, yes. The electric parking brake has to be put into its service mode so the actuators retract before the rear pistons can be pushed back, then closed and recalibrated afterward.

Why is my GLE350 wearing the inner pad faster than the outer?

That pattern usually means the caliper slide pins are sticking, so only the piston side is doing the work. Clean and grease the pins or fit a hardware kit, and replace the pads.

How often should the brake fluid be changed?

Mercedes-Benz includes brake fluid exchange in Service B, which for owners following the A/B schedule comes around every 2 years or 20,000 miles. Old, wet fluid is one of the main causes of internal caliper corrosion.
