2019 Genesis G70 Brake Caliper Problems and Replacement

Fixed Brembo caliper versus standard floating brake caliper on the 2019 Genesis G70

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

Most caliper trouble on a 2019 Genesis G70 comes down to one question first: which brakes does the car have? Genesis built the 2019 G70 with two different systems, a standard floating-caliper setup on 2.0T automatic cars and a Brembo fixed-caliper system on every 3.3T and on the 2.0T six-speed manual. The symptoms of a sticking or leaking caliper are similar on both, but the parts, the failure modes and the repair are not, so identify your system before you order anything.

Which Brakes Does Your 2019 G70 Have?

Genesis published the brake hardware for each 2019 G70 powertrain in its launch specifications. The short version: rotor size and caliper design depend on engine and transmission, and the Brembo package was an option on 2.0T automatic cars.

2019 G70 version Front brakes Rear brakes
2.0T, 8-speed automatic (standard brakes) 12.6 in. ventilated disc 12.4 in. solid disc
2.0T, 8-speed automatic with optional Brembo package Brembo system Brembo system
2.0T Sport, 6-speed manual 13.8 in. Brembo ventilated disc 13.4 in. Brembo ventilated disc
3.3T, 8-speed automatic 13.8 in. Brembo ventilated disc 13.4 in. ventilated disc

The quickest check is to look through the wheel spokes. Brembo calipers carry the Brembo name cast or printed on the body and are much larger, with the caliper body straddling the rotor on both sides. The standard caliper is a smaller single-housing unit that sits on the inboard side of the rotor and slides on guide pins. Genesis also lists an electronic parking brake as standard equipment, which matters when you work on the rear calipers.

How the Two Caliper Designs Fail

A floating caliper, like the standard G70 unit, has pistons on the inboard side only. When you brake, the piston pushes the inner pad into the rotor and the caliper body slides on its pins to pull the outer pad in. That sliding is the weak spot. Brake and Front End, a trade publication for brake technicians, notes that corroded brackets and seized bridge bolts or guide pins stop the caliper from moving, which leaves the inboard pad doing most of the work and wearing much faster than the outer pad.

A fixed caliper, like the Brembo units on the G70, does not slide at all. Brembo describes its fixed calipers as using opposed pistons on both sides of the rotor for even brake force distribution, greater stiffness and uniform pad wear. With no slide pins to seize, the usual failures move to the pistons and seals themselves: a torn dust boot lets water and road salt reach the seal, the seal loses flexibility, and a piston stops retracting. On a four-piston front caliper, a single lazy piston can produce a tapered pad or a slow drag on one corner.

Both designs share the same basic retraction method. The square-cut piston seal flexes as the piston moves out and pulls it back slightly when you release the pedal. As that seal ages or gets contaminated it stops pulling the piston back, and the pads keep light contact with the rotor.

Symptoms of a Bad Caliper on the G70

  • Pull to one side under braking. One caliper is applying harder or releasing slower than the other on the same axle.
  • A hot wheel or burning smell after a drive. Carefully compare wheel temperatures side to side after a normal drive without heavy braking. One wheel noticeably hotter than its partner points to a dragging caliper.
  • Uneven pad wear. An inner pad worn far more than the outer on a standard caliper points to seized guide pins. A tapered pad or uneven wear across one Brembo pad set points to a sticking piston.
  • Brake dust piling up on one wheel. On Brembo cars in particular, one wheel much dirtier than the others is often the first visible sign of a dragging corner.
  • Fluid on the inside of the wheel or tire. A leaking piston seal or bleeder. Wagner lists leaks, corrosion, noise, vibration and reduced braking among common caliper failure signs.
  • Brake fluid level dropping. The G70 owner's manual says the reservoir level falls slowly as the pads wear, which is normal, but that frequent top-ups indicate a leak in the system.

Rule out the simple things first. A worn pad, a collapsed rubber hose that acts like a one-way valve, or a pad stuck in its bracket can all mimic a bad caliper. If the pads slide freely, the pins move smoothly and the hose is healthy but the corner still drags, the caliper is the problem.

Check the ABS Recall Too

This is not a caliper issue, but anyone working on a 2019 G70's brakes should know about it. Under NHTSA recall 21V-161 (Genesis campaign 007G), certain 2019 to 2021 G70s have an ABS module that can short internally and potentially cause an engine compartment fire, whether parked or driving. The remedy is a replacement ABS module fuse installed by a Genesis retailer at no charge, and Genesis advised owners to park outside and away from structures until the repair is done. Run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before you start any brake work.

Repair or Replace, and What to Replace With It

On the standard floating caliper, a sticking caliper can sometimes be saved by cleaning the bracket, replacing the guide pins and boots, and lubricating with a brake-specific high-temperature grease. If the piston itself is seized or the seal is leaking, replace the caliper. A remanufactured or new loaded unit is usually the most reliable fix for a daily driver. Browse our brake calipers by fitment.

On Brembo cars, rebuilding a fixed caliper is possible but is precise work: the halves should not be split, and each piston and seal has to be cleaned and inspected. Many owners replace the whole caliper when a piston is pitted or corroded. Either way, follow these rules:

  • Replace pads at the same time. A dragging caliper overheats and glazes its pads, and a leaking caliper soaks them in fluid. Contaminated pads cannot be cleaned. Replace pads on both sides of the axle. For Brembo-equipped cars we carry EBC Yellowstuff front pads for the G70 with Brembo calipers and EBC Greenstuff 2000 rear pads for the Brembo-equipped G70, plus the full brake pad range.
  • Inspect the rotor. A caliper that dragged long enough can overheat the rotor and leave it uneven. Measure it against the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor. For Brembo cars see the EBC BSD front rotor set for the Brembo G70 or our brake rotors.
  • Replace the hardware. Brake and Front End's advice is to fit new pad hardware with new pads and to clean or replace bridge bolts, bushings and seals together to prevent comebacks. Our brake hardware kits cover clips and pins.
  • Check the flexible hose. An internally collapsed hose can hold pressure on a caliper. If the hose is old or cracked, replace it while the system is open. See brake hoses.
  • Bleed with the right fluid. Genesis specifies DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed container. Do not mix in DOT 3 or anything else, and never let mineral oil products near the system.

How Hard Is the Job?

Swapping a front caliper on a standard 2.0T is a moderate home job: two bracket bolts or guide bolts, one banjo bolt or hose fitting, then a thorough bleed. Brembo calipers are bolted directly to the knuckle, so the swap is simple mechanically, but the calipers are heavy and expensive, so handle them with care. Tighten every caliper and bracket bolt to the value in the factory service manual; do not guess.

The rear is more involved because of the electronic parking brake. The rear caliper pistons are driven by an electric motor for the parking brake, so they cannot simply be pushed back with a clamp until the system is put into its service or maintenance mode with a scan tool or the procedure in the service manual. Forcing the piston can damage the motor. After any caliper replacement, bleed the whole system so no air remains, pump the pedal until it is firm before moving the car, and bed in new pads following the pad maker's instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does every 2019 Genesis G70 have Brembo brakes?

No. Genesis fitted Brembo brakes to all 3.3T models and to the 2.0T six-speed manual Sport. The 2.0T automatic came with a standard floating-caliper system, with the Brembo package offered as an option. Look for the Brembo name on the caliper to be sure.

Can I put standard pads on a G70 with Brembo calipers?

No. The Brembo calipers use a different pad shape from the standard calipers, and the rotors are larger. Always order pads and rotors listed for your exact brake system, not just the model year.

Should I replace calipers in pairs?

It is not required, but it is common practice on higher-mileage cars. If one caliper has seized from corrosion, the other side has seen the same water and salt. At minimum, always replace pads on both sides of the axle so braking stays balanced.

What brake fluid does the 2019 G70 use?

Genesis specifies DOT 4 brake fluid from a sealed container. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and that moisture is what corrodes caliper pistons from the inside, so change it at the interval in your maintenance schedule.

How long do brake calipers last?

Wagner puts typical caliper life at roughly 75,000 to 100,000 miles, depending heavily on climate and driving. Cars that see road salt, sit for long periods or skip fluid changes tend to have caliper trouble sooner.

Is the ABS recall related to caliper problems?

No. Recall 21V-161 addresses an ABS module that could short and cause a fire. It does not affect the calipers, but it covers 2019 to 2021 G70s, so confirm it has been done on your car.
