An ABS light on a 2019 Genesis G70 means the car's anti-lock brake computer has found a fault and switched ABS off; your normal hydraulic brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a panic stop. The most common triggers are a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, low battery voltage, low brake fluid, mismatched tires, or a problem in the ABS module itself, which on the 2019 G70 was the subject of a safety recall.
Below is how the system works on this car, what each warning light combination tells you, how to narrow down the cause, and what to check before you spend money on parts.
How ABS Works on the 2019 Genesis G70
The G70 uses a hydraulic electronic control unit (HECU), which NHTSA's recall records call the ABS module. It sits in the engine bay, reads a wheel speed sensor at each corner, and pulses brake pressure to any wheel that starts to lock. The same module runs Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), which balances front and rear braking, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC), which brakes individual wheels to keep the car on its intended path.
According to the 2019 G70 owner's manual, the ABS light should come on for about three seconds when you press the Engine Start/Stop button to ON, then go out once the system finishes its self-diagnosis. If it stays on, the module has logged a fault and disabled ABS. The manual is clear that the hydraulic brakes still operate when only the ABS light is on.
The G70 also has a dual-diagonal hydraulic system and an electronic parking brake (EPB), and both have their own warning lights. That matters, because the combination of lights on your dash tells you far more than the ABS light alone.
Read the Warning Light Combination First
| What you see | What the owner's manual says it means | How urgent |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | ABS malfunction; hydraulic brakes still work | Drive gently and get it scanned soon |
| ABS light plus Parking Brake and Brake Fluid light (parking brake released) | EBD warning: the ABS and regular brake system may not work normally | Avoid high speed and abrupt braking; get it inspected as soon as possible |
| Parking Brake and Brake Fluid light only (parking brake released) | Brake fluid level in the reservoir is low | Stop safely and check the fluid; do not drive if there is a leak or the brakes do not work properly |
| ABS light after a jump start | Low battery voltage, not necessarily an ABS failure | Recharge the battery and recheck |
| ABS light after long, continuous ABS activity on ice | May come on after extended ABS operation | Stop, turn the engine off, restart; if it goes out, the system is normal |
The manual also notes that when the ABS light, or the ABS and brake fluid lights together, are on, the speedometer, odometer or trip meter may not work and the EPS (steering) light may come on. The EPB light can also illuminate alongside an ESC fault without the parking brake itself being faulty. A cluster full of lights does not always mean several broken parts; it often traces back to one fault in the ABS/ESC system.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on the G70
1. Wheel speed sensor, wiring or tone ring
This is the most frequent cause on any modern car. Each wheel has a sensor reading a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the hub. Brake and Front End's diagnostic guide lists the usual failures: broken wires or loose and corroded connectors, metallic debris or brake lining material stuck to the sensor tip, damaged or corroded tone ring teeth, and an excessive air gap, which a worn wheel bearing can cause. Active sensors, the type most modern cars use, need the ignition on and the harness connected to be tested, so a simple ohmmeter check is not a reliable way to condemn one.
2. Low battery or charging voltage
The G70 manual specifically warns that the ABS light may come on after a jump start because of low battery voltage, and that this does not mean ABS has failed. A weak battery, a loose terminal or a charging problem can set the same kind of fault. Charge and test the battery before chasing sensors.
3. Low brake fluid
Low fluid normally turns on the Parking Brake and Brake Fluid light, and together with the ABS light it points to the EBD warning. Fluid drops slowly as pads wear, because the caliper pistons move out to follow them. A sudden drop means a leak. The manual lists the capacity as 0.74 to 0.85 US qt (0.7 to 0.8 L) of fluid meeting FMVSS116 DOT 3 or DOT 4, and says to keep the level between the MIN and MAX marks.
4. Mismatched or incorrect tires
The ABS and ESC compare wheel speeds. The G70 manual warns that driving with wheels and tires of different sizes may cause the ESC system to malfunction. Brake and Front End notes the same thing from the diagnostic side: a wrong tire diameter makes one wheel read faster or slower than the others. If the light appeared right after new tires, a spare, or a single replaced tire, confirm every tire matches the sizes on the door placard.
5. ABS module (HECU) fault and the 2019 recall
NHTSA campaign 21V161000 (Hyundai recall 007G) covers certain 2019 to 2021 Genesis G70s. NHTSA's summary says the ABS module could malfunction and short circuit, and that the short could cause an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. The remedy is that dealers replace the ABS module fuse free of charge, and owners were told to park outside and away from structures until it was done. Before paying for any ABS diagnosis on a 2019 G70, run your VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup or ask a Genesis retailer whether this campaign is open on your car.
6. Steering angle or alignment issues (ESC side)
Tomorrow's Technician points out that a steering angle sensor reading off-center, or a large thrust angle from rear alignment, can make the stability system think the car is sliding when it is not. That usually shows up as ESC lights or unexpected brake pulses rather than an ABS-only light, and it tends to appear after an alignment, suspension work or a hard curb strike.
How to Diagnose It Step by Step
- Check for the recall. Confirm whether campaign 21V161000 has been completed on your VIN.
- Note which lights are on and when they came on: at startup, after a pothole, after rain, after new tires or after a battery event.
- Check the battery and terminals. If the car was recently jumped, recharge fully and restart.
- Check the brake fluid with the car level. If it is low, look for wetness at the calipers, lines and hoses before topping up.
- Confirm the tires are the correct sizes and evenly inflated.
- Scan the ABS module, not just the engine computer. A basic code reader often cannot see ABS codes. The code will usually point to a specific wheel sensor, the pump motor, a valve, or a voltage fault.
- Watch live wheel speeds on a test drive. Brake and Front End recommends a straight-line drive at roughly 12 to 25 mph; a sensor that drops out or reads differently from the others is your suspect.
- Inspect the suspect corner: harness routing and clips, the connector, the sensor tip for debris, and the bearing for play.
The Fix, and What to Replace at the Same Time
A failed wheel speed sensor is replaced at that corner. If the air gap problem comes from a worn wheel bearing or a hub with a damaged encoder ring, the hub or bearing is the real fix and a new sensor alone will not cure it. Wiring faults are repaired at the harness. A module fault or open recall goes to a Genesis retailer.
A brake job on the G70 is a good time to deal with sensors, because the wheel, caliper and rotor are already off. Take care not to pull or twist the sensor harness when you remove the caliper, and clean lining dust away from the sensor area. If your pads are worn close to their limit, remember that topping off the reservoir now means it can overfill later when fresh, thicker pads push the pistons back.
For 2019 G70 2.0T cars with Brembo calipers, we carry parts matched to this car, including the EBC Bluestuff NDX front brake pads for the G70 2.0T, the EBC Greenstuff 2000 rear pad set, and the EBC BSD V-slot front rotor set. Pad and rotor fitment depends on engine and caliper package, so match your car's front caliper to the listing. How Hard Is the Job?
Checking the battery, fluid and tires is driveway work. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate DIY job with basic tools, provided the fastener is not seized in the knuckle. Hub or bearing replacement is harder. Anything involving the HECU, bleeding the ABS unit after it has been opened, or recalibrating the steering angle sensor needs a scan tool with bidirectional functions, and the recall remedy is dealer-only. Torque every fastener to the value in the factory service manual.

Is it safe to drive a 2019 Genesis G70 with the ABS light on?
With only the ABS light on, the owner's manual says the hydraulic brakes still work, but you lose anti-lock and likely stability control. Drive gently and get it checked soon. If the ABS light and the brake fluid light are on together, avoid high speed and hard braking and have it inspected as soon as possible.
Can a weak battery turn on the ABS light?
Yes. The G70 manual states the ABS light may come on after a jump start because of low battery voltage, without an actual ABS failure. Recharge the battery and restart before chasing parts.
Is there a recall for the 2019 G70 ABS module?
Yes. NHTSA campaign 21V161000, Hyundai number 007G, covers certain 2019 to 2021 G70s for an ABS module that could short circuit and create a fire risk. Dealers replace the ABS module fuse free of charge. Check your VIN to see if it applies.
Will new brake pads turn off the ABS light?
Not by themselves. Pads do not feed the ABS computer. But if low fluid from worn pads, or a sensor harness damaged during a previous brake job, caused the fault, fixing that during the pad job can clear it.
What brake fluid does the 2019 G70 use?
The owner's manual specifies fluid meeting FMVSS116 DOT 3 or DOT 4, with a capacity of 0.74 to 0.85 US qt.
Why did the light come on right after I got new tires?
ABS and ESC compare wheel speeds, so a tire of the wrong size makes one wheel look like it is slipping. Genesis warns against driving with different sized wheels and tires. A sensor or harness disturbed during the tire work is the other likely culprit.
