The 2019-2023 Ford Ranger takes DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) brake fluid that meets Ford specification WSS-M6C65-A2, sold by Ford as Motorcraft PM-20. Ford's 2022 Ranger owner's manual lists a brake fluid change every 3 years, with no mileage limit, and says not to exceed that time. Check the level at the reservoir between the MIN and MAX marks, and never top off with a fluid that does not meet the Ford spec.
What Brake Fluid the 2019-2023 Ranger Uses
Every U.S. owner's manual for this generation of Ranger that we checked (2019, 2020 and 2022) calls for the same fluid. The capacities and specifications section lists Motorcraft DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) High Performance Motor Vehicle Brake Fluid, part number PM-20, against material specification WSS-M6C65-A2. Ford recommends DOT 4 LV High Performance Brake Fluid or an equivalent meeting WSS-M6C65-A2, and warns that any other fluid may reduce brake performance.
That "or equivalent" matters. You are not locked into the Motorcraft bottle, but the fluid you buy should state on the label that it is DOT 4 LV (ISO 4925 Class 6) and meets the Ford WSS-M6C65-A2 spec. A generic DOT 4 bottle is not automatically the same thing: the "LV" part is a cold-viscosity requirement that plain DOT 4 does not have to meet.

Why DOT 4 LV and Not Regular DOT 3 or DOT 4
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 116 sets the floor for every brake fluid sold in the U.S. It requires DOT 3 fluid to have a dry equilibrium reflux boiling point of at least 205 C (401 F) and a wet boiling point of at least 140 C (284 F). DOT 4 has to reach at least 230 C (446 F) dry and 155 C (311 F) wet. The same standard caps viscosity at minus 40 C at 1,500 mm2/s for DOT 3 and 1,800 mm2/s for DOT 4.
Ford's PM-20 goes well past those minimums. Ford lists it at a 260 C (500 F) dry boiling point, a 170 C (338 F) wet boiling point, and a maximum kinematic viscosity of 750 mm2/s at minus 40 C, and recommends it for ABS brake systems with stability control. Thinner fluid moves through the small passages of the ABS hydraulic unit more readily when the system has to modulate pressure on a cold morning. The Ranger has a four-channel ABS and AdvanceTrac stability control, which can apply individual brakes on its own, so fluid that flows well at low temperature is part of the design.
| Fluid | Min. dry boiling point | Min. wet boiling point | Max. viscosity at -40 C |
|---|---|---|---|
| DOT 3 (FMVSS 116 minimum) | 205 C / 401 F | 140 C / 284 F | 1,500 mm2/s |
| DOT 4 (FMVSS 116 minimum) | 230 C / 446 F | 155 C / 311 F | 1,800 mm2/s |
| Motorcraft PM-20 DOT 4 LV (Ford rating) | 260 C / 500 F | 170 C / 338 F | 750 mm2/s |
Ford's product sheet for PM-20 also says it is suitable for Ford vehicles that specify WSS-M6C65-A1 (DOT 3), but it should not be used in Ford vehicles that specify WSS-M6C65-A3 (DOT 5.1 or "Super DOT 4") fluid. For the Ranger the answer is simple: A2 is the spec, and PM-20 or a labeled equivalent is the fluid. Never put silicone DOT 5 in a Ranger; it is a different chemistry from the glycol-based fluid the system was designed around.
Brake Fluid Flush Interval and Why It Is Time-Based
The 2022 Ranger owner's manual has a dedicated Brake Fluid Maintenance line in its scheduled maintenance section: change the brake fluid every 3 years, do not exceed the designated time, and note that brake fluid servicing requires special equipment available at an authorized dealer. Ford's PM-20 product page gives the same recommendation for the fluid itself, a change-out every three years. The 2020 and 2022 manuals explain the reason in plain terms: brake fluid absorbs water over time, which degrades its effectiveness, so it has to be changed on schedule to prevent degraded braking performance.
In our read of the 2019 Ranger owner's manual, the maintenance schedule did not include a separate time-based brake fluid change line. The fluid, the hardware and the moisture problem are the same on a 2019 as on a 2022, so we treat every 2019-2023 Ranger the same way: flush every 3 years. If your 2019 or 2020 truck has never had its fluid changed, it is already past that point.
The interval is set in years rather than miles because moisture gets in whether the truck is driven or parked. A Ranger that sits most of the week in a humid climate can have wetter fluid than one that racks up highway miles. Towing, mountain driving and hard off-road use heat the fluid more, and wet fluid boils at a lower temperature, which is exactly when you need full braking.
Signs Your Ranger's Brake Fluid Needs Attention
- A soft or sinking pedal, especially after repeated stops on a downhill grade or while towing. Moisture-laden fluid can boil in the calipers and leave vapor in the lines.
- The red brake warning light or a Brake Fluid Level Low message. Ford's manual tells you to have the brake system inspected immediately. A falling level usually means worn pads (the caliper pistons sit farther out) or a leak, not that the truck "uses" fluid.
- Fluid that has turned dark compared with the clear to amber color of fresh fluid. Color is a rough clue only; age is the real trigger.
- More than 3 years since the last documented flush, even if the pedal feels fine.
To check the level, Ford's procedure is short: park on level ground and look at where the fluid sits against the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir. Between the marks is acceptable. Below MIN or above MAX, have the truck checked as soon as possible. Keep the cap tight except when adding fluid, and only use fluid from a sealed container, since Ford warns that dirt, water or petroleum contamination can damage the brake system.
How the Flush Is Done and What to Replace at the Same Time
A flush replaces the old fluid in the lines, calipers and ABS unit, not just what is in the reservoir. The usual approach is to draw most of the old fluid out of the reservoir, refill with fresh DOT 4 LV, then bleed each wheel until clean fluid comes out, never letting the reservoir run dry. The bleed sequence and any ABS procedure should come from the factory service information for your truck.
Ford notes that brake fluid servicing requires special equipment. A pressure bleeder, and a scan tool that can cycle the ABS hydraulic unit, are the reason: if air gets into the ABS unit, a simple pedal bleed may not clear it. A careful home mechanic with a pressure bleeder can do a routine flush where no air entered the system; if the reservoir ran dry or the ABS unit was opened, it is a shop job.
A flush is the right time to look at the rest of the system:
- Pads. If you are pushing caliper pistons back for new pads, do it before the flush so old fluid is not forced back toward the ABS unit and master cylinder. For 2WD 2.3L trucks we carry EBC Greenstuff front brake pads for the 2019+ Ranger and EBC Yellowstuff front pads for towing and hard use, with matching EBC Yellowstuff rear brake pads. For 2022 and newer trucks there are DBA XP rear brake pads for the Ranger. Browse more options in our brake pads collection.
- Rotors. Check thickness and runout while the wheels are off; see our brake rotor collection.
- Hoses and lines. Cracked rubber hoses or rusted steel lines near the calipers are common on trucks that see road salt. Replacements are in our brake hoses and brake lines collections.
- Bleeder screws and calipers. A seized bleeder or a sticking caliper piston is easier to deal with during a planned flush than on the side of the road. See our replacement brake calipers.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I use DOT 3 brake fluid in my 2019-2023 Ford Ranger?
No. Ford specifies DOT 4 LV meeting WSS-M6C65-A2 and warns that any other fluid may reduce brake performance. DOT 3 has lower minimum boiling points under FMVSS 116 and is not built to the low-viscosity requirement. Use PM-20 or a fluid labeled as meeting the Ford spec.
Is regular DOT 4 the same as DOT 4 LV?
Not necessarily. Every DOT 4 must meet the federal DOT 4 minimums, but DOT 4 LV (ISO 4925 Class 6) also has to stay much thinner in extreme cold. Ford rates PM-20 at 750 mm2/s at minus 40 C, versus the 1,800 mm2/s ceiling for plain DOT 4. Look for "LV" or "Class 6" and the Ford spec on the label.
How often should I flush the brake fluid on a Ford Ranger?
Every 3 years, regardless of mileage, according to the 2022 Ranger owner's manual and Ford's PM-20 product information. We apply the same interval to 2019-2021 trucks because the fluid and system are the same.
How much brake fluid does a Ranger hold?
Ford's capacity chart does not give a volume for brake fluid; it simply says to fill between the MIN and MAX marks on the reservoir. A full flush pushes fluid through all four corners, so have more fluid on hand than the reservoir holds and use unopened containers.
Why is my Ranger's brake fluid level dropping?
As pads wear, the caliper pistons move out and more fluid sits in the calipers, so the reservoir level drops slowly. A sudden drop, a wet spot inside a wheel, or a soft pedal points to a leak. Ford says to have the brake system inspected right away when the low fluid warning appears.
