The minimum thickness for a 2019-2022 Honda Insight rotor is the discard limit marked on the rotor itself (look for "MIN TH" followed by a value in millimeters) and listed in Honda's factory service information. Once a rotor measures at or below that number anywhere on its braking surface, it gets replaced, not reused and not machined. Below is how to find the mark, measure it correctly, and decide when the rotors on your Insight are done.
What brakes the 2019-2022 Insight uses
Honda's own 2019 Insight specifications list power-assisted ventilated front disc and solid rear disc brakes on every trim, with an 11.1-inch front rotor and a 10.2-inch rear rotor. ABS, Electronic Brake Distribution and Brake Assist are standard, and so is an Electric Parking Brake with Automatic Brake Hold. Curb weight runs from 2,987 lb on the LX to 3,078 lb on the Touring, so the brakes are not working against a heavy car.
That layout matters for rotor wear in two ways:
- The front rotors are vented. They are thicker, with cooling vanes between two friction faces, and they do most of the work. Their discard limit is a different number from the rear.
- The rear rotors are solid. They are a single thin plate, so there is less material to wear before they reach the limit, and they are more prone to surface rust on a car that does not use them hard.
The Insight is a hybrid, and a good share of everyday slowing is done by the electric drive rather than the friction brakes. Pads and rotors often last longer than on a conventional compact, but the rotors also see less heat, so rust, pitting and a lip of corrosion around the edge can end a rotor's life before it is worn thin.
Where to find the minimum thickness on your rotors
Brembo explains that the wear limit is etched on the disc as "MIN TH" followed by the value in millimeters, and that thickness below it will not guarantee correct braking efficiency. HELLA notes the marking is usually stamped on the outer edge of the disc or on the hat (the center section that bolts to the hub). On most rotors you need to clean off rust and brake dust with a wire brush to read it.
If the stamp is unreadable, use the value in Honda service information for your model year, or the spec sheet for the replacement rotor's part number. Do not borrow a number from a forum post or another Honda model: the front and rear rotors on the Insight differ, and Honda part numbers for this car have been superseded over the years, so the spec has to match the rotor you actually have.
| Position | Rotor type | Diameter (Honda spec) | Minimum thickness |
|---|---|---|---|
| Front | Ventilated disc | 11.1 in | Stamped on rotor as MIN TH; confirm in Honda service information |
| Rear | Solid disc | 10.2 in | Stamped on rotor as MIN TH; confirm in Honda service information |
How to measure an Insight rotor correctly
- Use a micrometer or brake disc gauge. A tape measure or ruler will not read accurately enough. HELLA specifies a brake disc gauge.
- Measure inside the worn track. The pads leave a raised lip at the outer edge. Place the tool on the swept surface, not on that ridge, or you will read thicker than the rotor really is.
- Take several readings. Brembo calls for at least four points around the disc, and the lowest reading counts for the whole rotor.
- Compare against MIN TH. At or below the mark, replace. HELLA is direct about it: once the value has been reached or undercut, the disc must be replaced.
- Look for variation, not just the lowest number. Readings that differ noticeably around the rotor point to thickness variation, which shows up as a pulsing pedal or a shimmy in the steering wheel.
When to replace the rotors (even if they pass)
A rotor above minimum thickness is not automatically good. Replace front or rear rotors on an Insight when you see any of the following:
- Measurement at or under MIN TH, or so close that machining would take it under.
- Pulsation under braking that comes back after new pads, which usually means thickness variation.
- Deep scoring or grooves you can catch with a fingernail, often from pads worn to the backing plate.
- Heat cracks or blue spots on the friction face.
- Heavy rust and pitting on the swept area, common on the solid rear rotors of hybrids that sit or see mostly gentle stops.
Brembo lists what can happen when a disc is run below minimum: less heat capacity and strength, thermal cracks, warping that causes vibration and noise, longer pedal travel, and fade under heavy use. Brembo's general rule is to replace discs at every other pad replacement, and it says discs must be replaced on both sides of the axle even if only one is under the limit. HELLA adds that new pads should only go on rotors that have not been undercut.
What to replace at the same time
When the rotors go, replace these together:
- Pads on the same axle. Fresh pads bed into a fresh rotor surface; old pads carry the wear pattern of the old rotor. For the front, our 2019-2022 Honda Insight front ceramic brake pads are a direct match, and you can browse more ceramic brake pads and replacement brake rotors.
- Abutment clips and pad hardware. A brake hardware kit helps prevent squeal and uneven pad wear.
- Brake fluid, if it is due by age or looks dark. Use the fluid type printed on the reservoir cap or in the owner's manual.
- Caliper slide pins, cleaned and lubricated, and the caliper checked for a sticking piston, which is a common cause of one rotor wearing faster than the other.
How hard the job is on an Insight
The front rotors are a standard job for someone with basic tools: remove the caliper and bracket, remove the rotor (often held by small retaining screws that can seize), clean the hub face, install the new rotor, and torque everything to the values in the factory service manual. The rear is where the Insight needs care. Because it has an electric parking brake, the rear caliper pistons are driven by a motor. Snap-on's Honda service reference describes a Brake Pad Maintenance Mode used for rear brake pad work, which requires the parking brake released, the vehicle stopped, and battery voltage above 10 volts, and it points to the service manual for the procedure. Forcing the rear pistons back without that mode can damage the caliper. If you do not have a scan tool or the Honda procedure, the rear axle is the place to hand the job to a shop.
After any rotor and pad replacement, bed the new pads in with a series of moderate stops before normal driving. There are no NHTSA safety recalls for brake components on the 2019 Insight; the recalls on file cover the fuel pump, airbags, seat belts, the rearview camera and body control software.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum rotor thickness for a 2019 Honda Insight?
It is the MIN TH value stamped on each rotor and listed in Honda service information. The front vented and rear solid rotors have different limits, so read the stamp on the rotor you are measuring or confirm it by part number.
Can I resurface Honda Insight rotors?
Only if the rotor will still be above minimum thickness after machining. Many rotors on modern compacts do not have enough material for that, and new rotors are often the better choice.
Do I have to replace both rotors on the axle?
Yes. Brembo and HELLA both say to replace discs in pairs, even if only one is under the limit, so braking stays even side to side.
Why are my Insight's rear rotors rusty when the pads still look fine?
On a hybrid the electric drive handles much of the routine slowing, so the friction brakes, especially the solid rear rotors, can sit unused long enough to rust and pit. Heavy rust on the swept surface is a valid reason to replace a rotor that still measures thick enough.
Do I need a scan tool to replace the rear brakes?
The rear calipers are part of the electric parking brake, and Honda service tools use a Brake Pad Maintenance Mode for rear pad work. Use a scan tool that supports it or follow the exact Honda procedure in the service manual.
