DOT 5 has a higher boiling point on paper, but Honda specifically says it is not compatible with this car's brake system.

Signs Your Insight's Brake Fluid Needs Attention

• Maintenance Minder shows 7. That is the car telling you the fluid is due.
• Fluid level at or below MIN. Honda says to have the car inspected for leaks or worn brake pads. As pads wear, caliper pistons move out and the reservoir level drops, so a slowly falling level often means pads are getting thin rather than a leak.
• Red brake system indicator on. The manual lists low brake fluid or a brake system malfunction as the causes. Press the pedal lightly to check pressure; if it feels abnormal, take immediate action and stop in a safe place. Do not keep driving on a low reservoir.
• Red brake and ABS indicators on together. Honda notes this means electronic brake distribution is not working, which can make the car unstable under sudden braking. Have it inspected right away.

Doing the Flush: What to Know Before You Start

A brake fluid flush on the Insight follows the same basic idea as any four-wheel-disc car: remove old fluid from the reservoir, then push fresh fluid through each caliper bleeder until clean fluid comes out, never letting the reservoir run dry. A few points specific to this car:

• Use the right fluid from a sealed bottle. Honda Heavy Duty DOT 3 is the specification. Opened bottles absorb moisture sitting on the shelf.
• Respect the electric parking brake and electric servo brake system. Check the factory service information for the correct bleeding sequence and whether any scan-tool procedure is required before you start, and do not try to push rear caliper pistons back without knowing how the electric parking brake is put into service mode.
• Protect the paint. Glycol brake fluid damages paint. Wipe spills immediately and rinse with water.
• Tighten bleeder screws gently to the value in the factory service manual; they are small and strip easily.
