When the ABS light comes on in a 2019-2022 Honda Insight, Honda's own dashboard guide says the car still has normal braking ability but no anti-lock function until the fault is fixed. On this hybrid the usual culprits are the same as on any modern car - a wheel speed sensor, its wiring, or the sensor's tone ring - but the Insight's electric servo brake system and its 12-volt electrical health add a few causes worth ruling out before you buy parts.
How the ABS and Brake System Work on the 2019-2022 Insight
The third-generation Insight does not rely on a conventional vacuum booster. It uses Honda's electric servo brake system, in which the pedal you press works a pedal-feel simulator and a stroke sensor, while an electric-motor-driven tandem motor cylinder generates the hydraulic pressure at the wheels. That arrangement lets the car blend regenerative braking from the drive motor with friction braking from the pads and rotors. It is still a hydraulic brake system - fluid, calipers, pads and rotors all work the way you expect - but the pressure source is electronically controlled.
On top of that sits the anti-lock and stability layer. The ABS reads a speed signal from each wheel; if one wheel slows much faster than the others under hard braking, the system modulates pressure to that wheel so it keeps turning. Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) and hill start assist rely on the same wheel speed data. That shared data is why one bad sensor rarely turns on only one light.
What the Warning Lights Mean
Honda's 2019 Insight dashboard guide groups these as malfunction indicators - red and amber lights that should go out shortly after startup. If one stays lit, the system has logged a fault.
| Indicator | What Honda says it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ABS (amber) | A problem with the anti-lock brake system; normal braking remains, no anti-lock function | Drive gently, leave extra following distance, have codes read soon |
| VSA (amber) | A problem with the VSA or hill start assist system | Often appears alongside ABS when a wheel speed signal is lost |
| Brake system (red) | Brake fluid is low, or a malfunction in the brake system | Press the pedal lightly to check pressure; if abnormal, take immediate action and have the car repaired immediately |
The combination tells you a lot. ABS plus VSA with a normal pedal points toward a wheel speed input. ABS plus the red brake system light, or any change in pedal feel, points toward the hydraulic side or the electric servo system and deserves a much faster response.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on the Insight
1. Wheel speed sensor or its wiring
This is the most frequent cause on any ABS-equipped car. Each sensor lives at the hub, where it sees water, road salt, heat and brake dust. A cracked sensor body, a chafed harness near the suspension, or a corroded connector interrupts the signal, and the module sets a code for that wheel. Wiring damage is common after suspension, hub or brake work if the harness was stretched or left unclipped.
2. Damaged or contaminated tone ring
The sensor reads a toothed or magnetic ring that turns with the hub or axle. Dorman describes its replacement tone rings as addressing ABS failure caused by a cracked, corroded or fatigued original ring. A ring packed with rust scale or metal debris can also give an erratic signal. On many modern cars the magnetic encoder is built into the wheel bearing, so a worn bearing can be the real cause.
3. Low brake fluid
Brake fluid drops slowly as pads wear because the caliper pistons move outward. A low reservoir usually brings on the red brake system light first, but low fluid together with any warning light is a reason to inspect pad thickness and look for leaks before topping off.
4. Low system voltage
Electronic brake systems are sensitive to supply voltage. The Insight's 12-volt battery is charged by the hybrid system's DC-DC converter rather than an engine-driven alternator. NHTSA recall 20V798000 covers certain 2020-2021 Insight vehicles where the DC-DC converter may shut down and stop recharging the 12-volt battery; dealers update the power converter unit software free of charge. A weak 12-volt battery or charging fault can bring on several warning lights at once, so test the battery and check recall status before replacing brake parts.
5. Electric servo brake or ABS/VSA modulator faults
Less common, but possible: a fault in the tandem motor cylinder, pedal stroke sensor, or the ABS/VSA modulator. These usually set specific codes and often bring on the red brake light as well. They need dealer-level diagnosis.
How to Diagnose It
- Check the basics. Look at the brake fluid level, confirm the parking brake is fully released, and note which lights are on together.
- Read the codes. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS and VSA codes. You need a scan tool that reads the brake and stability modules; the code will usually name the wheel and whether the signal is missing, erratic or out of range.
- Check open recalls. Enter your VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. The 2019-2020 cars are also covered by a body control module software recall (20V771000) for communication disruptions affecting other systems.
- Inspect the named wheel. Follow the harness from the sensor to the body connector, look for chafing, and check the sensor tip and tone ring for damage or debris.
- Compare live data. Wheel speeds in the scan tool should track together while driving straight. One that drops out or reads zero identifies the bad corner.
The Fix and What to Replace at the Same Time
Most ABS lights end with a wheel speed sensor, a harness repair, or a bearing or tone ring. After the repair, clear the codes and road test; the light should stay off. If it returns, recheck the same corner before moving on.
If the car is in for brake work anyway, it is a good time to inspect pads and rotors. The Insight's regenerative braking does much of the everyday slowing, so friction parts see less work than on a conventional car, but rotors can still rust and pads can glaze from light use. We carry front ceramic brake pads for the 2019-2022 Honda Insight, plus replacement brake rotors and brake hardware kits for the clips and pins that should be renewed with a pad change.
Brake fluid service on this car is different from older Hondas. Honda's procedure for electric servo brake hybrids, including the 2019-2022 Insight, bleeds the brakes in two passes: once in ON mode for the circuit between the tandem motor cylinder and each brake, and again in OFF mode for the circuit between the pedal-feel simulator and each brake. The order is left front, right front, right rear, left rear. The procedure warns that pressing the brake pedal with a pressure bleeder attached will damage the master cylinder, and it ends by confirming the brake system indicator does not come on. Use the fluid specified on the reservoir cap or in your owner's manual.
How Hard Is the Job?
Replacing a wheel speed sensor is a moderate driveway job: raise the car, unplug the connector, remove the mounting bolt, fit the new sensor and route the harness in the original clips. A seized sensor can break on removal. Tone ring or hub bearing work is harder and often needs a press or a bolt-in hub assembly. Anything involving the tandem motor cylinder or modulator is dealer work, since it needs Honda-level diagnostics. Torque all fasteners to the values in the factory service manual.

Is it safe to drive a 2019-2022 Insight with the ABS light on?
Honda says normal braking remains but anti-lock function is lost. You can drive carefully to a repair, but the wheels can lock in a panic stop, especially on wet or icy roads. If the red brake system light is also on or the pedal feels different, stop driving and have it inspected.
Why are the ABS and VSA lights on at the same time?
Both systems use the same wheel speed signals. When one wheel speed input fails, the car shuts down anti-lock and stability control together, so both lights come on.
Can new brake pads cause the ABS light?
Pads themselves do not, but a harness pulled or pinched during the job, or a sensor bumped out of place, can. Check the wiring at the wheel you worked on first.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?
If the fault is still present, the light will come back once the system runs its self-check. Fix the cause, then clear the codes with a scan tool.
Can I bleed the brakes the old-fashioned way on this hybrid?
Not quite. The electric servo system needs the two-pass ON mode and OFF mode procedure, and a pressure bleeder must never be combined with pressing the pedal. Follow the Honda procedure.
