2018-2020 Buick Enclave ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

2018-2020 Buick Enclave ABS warning light causes and fixes

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

On a 2018-2020 Buick Enclave, an ABS light that stays on almost always means the antilock control module has lost a trustworthy signal from one of the four wheel speed sensors, or has found a fault in its own pump, valves or power supply. The regular brakes still work when the ABS light is the only light on, but antilock, traction control and StabiliTrak can all be affected, so the fix is to read the stored code, find the one wheel or circuit it points to, and repair that.

How the ABS System Works on the 2018-2020 Enclave

The second-generation Enclave that arrived for 2018 uses four-wheel disc brakes with an Electric Parking Brake (EPB) at the rear, an electronic ABS module mounted to the hydraulic unit, and a speed sensor at each wheel. Buick's 2019 owner's manual describes ABS as a system in which a computer senses when a wheel is about to stop rolling and then works the brakes at each wheel separately, updating continuously on wheel speed as you brake.

Each wheel speed sensor sits next to a toothed or magnetic tone ring (the reluctor) that turns with the hub. As the ring passes the sensor, the sensor sends a pulse train to the module. The module compares all four wheels many times a second. If one wheel reads wrong, drops out, or the signal becomes erratic, the module cannot trust its math, so it shuts off antilock and turns the amber ABS light on. Because traction control and StabiliTrak use the same wheel speed data, those warnings often come on alongside it.

The manual also says ABS runs a self-check as you first drive away. A brief motor or clicking noise and a small movement of the brake pedal during that test are normal and are not a fault.

What the Warning Lights Are Telling You

Before you chase a part, read which lights are on. The Enclave has several brake-related indicators, and the combination matters.

What you see What it means (per the 2019 owner's manual) What to do
ABS light only Regular brakes work, but antilock is not functioning Drive carefully and get the code read soon
ABS light and red brake system warning light Antilock is off and there is also a problem with the regular brakes Do not keep driving normally; have it inspected right away
Brake system warning light only A brake problem, which includes low brake fluid Check fluid level and look for leaks or worn pads
Flashing parking brake light or Service Parking Brake light A fault in the Electric Parking Brake system Have the EPB system scanned
ABS light that clears after a restart An intermittent fault; the code is usually still stored Scan it anyway before it becomes permanent

Buick's own advice when the ABS light comes on while driving is to stop when it is safe, turn the vehicle off, and restart it to reset the system. If the light stays on, or comes back while driving, the vehicle needs service.

Most Common Causes of an Enclave ABS Light

1. A failed or damaged wheel speed sensor

This is the leading cause on crossovers of this type. Sensors fail internally, or their signal weakens from vibration and heat cycling. Delphi lists internal short circuits, wiring breaks from vibration, and damage during other brake work as typical sensor failure modes. A sensor that was pried or pulled on during a hub or brake job is a frequent culprit when the light appears right after a repair.

2. Wiring and connector damage

The harness to each sensor runs through the wheel well and flexes with every suspension movement. Chafed insulation, a cracked connector, or corrosion from road salt can cause an open circuit or an intermittent signal. These often show up as a light that comes and goes on bumps or in wet weather.

3. Worn wheel bearing or damaged tone ring

On many modern vehicles the tone ring is built into the wheel hub and bearing assembly. Excess bearing play changes the gap between the sensor and the ring, and chipped or rusted ring features distort the signal. AA1Car notes that bad bearings and missing, broken or chipped teeth on a tone ring cause signal fluctuations that the ABS module reads as a fault. If you also hear a growl or hum that changes with speed or when turning, suspect the hub.

4. Debris on the sensor tip

Wheel speed sensors are magnetic, so metallic brake dust and rust scale collect on the tip. Delphi's guidance is to inspect the sensor and reluctor and clean contamination off them. This is common after a brake job that knocked a lot of rotor rust loose.

5. Tire size or spare tire mismatch

The module expects all four wheels to turn at about the same rate when driving straight. The Enclave owner's manual warns that on the compact spare, the ABS and traction control systems may engage until the spare is recognized. A mismatched tire, or one badly underinflated, can also upset the wheel speed comparison.

6. Low voltage or a module or pump fault

A weak battery or poor ground can make the ABS module log faults on start-up. Less often, the module itself or the hydraulic pump motor fails. That is the expensive answer, and it should be the last one you arrive at, not the first.

How to Diagnose It Step by Step

  1. Check the other lights and the fluid. If the red brake light is on too, look at the master cylinder reservoir. Buick says the level drops for only two reasons: normal lining wear or a leak.
  2. Read the codes with an ABS-capable scan tool. A basic engine code reader will not see ABS codes. The code tells you which wheel and whether the problem is the signal, the circuit, or the module.
  3. Watch live wheel speed data. AA1Car's rule of thumb: all four sensors should read the same while driving straight. The one that drops out, lags, or reads zero is your problem corner.
  4. Inspect that corner. Follow the harness from the sensor to the body connector. Look for rubbed-through wires, a loose or corroded connector, and debris on the sensor tip. Check the hub for play.
  5. Test before you buy. Use the procedure in the factory service information to check the sensor circuit. Replace the sensor if the circuit and connector are good but the signal is not. Replace the hub if bearing play or a damaged tone ring is causing the bad signal.
  6. Clear the code and road test. Confirm the light stays off through a full drive, including turns and a moderate stop.

The Fix, and What to Do at the Same Time

Most Enclave ABS repairs fall into one of three jobs: replacing a single wheel speed sensor, repairing a section of harness, or replacing a wheel hub and bearing assembly. On the rear, remember that the Enclave has an Electric Parking Brake. If you need to take a rear caliper off to reach the hub, put the EPB into service mode with a scan tool or the procedure in the service information before you retract the piston. Forcing the piston back against the motor can damage the actuator and set parking brake faults on top of your ABS code.

If the corner is already apart, it is the right time to look at the brakes you had to remove:

  • Pads. The Enclave's pads have wear indicators that make a high-pitched sound when they are worn, and Buick says pads should be replaced as complete sets, so do both sides of the axle. We carry Bosch ceramic front brake pads for the 2018-2020 Enclave, and more options are in our brake pads collection.
  • Rotors. If the rotors are grooved, heat-spotted or causing pulsation, replacing them with the pads avoids a second teardown. See our brake rotors.
  • Hardware. New abutment clips and slide pin boots help new pads release cleanly. Our brake hardware kits cover this.
  • Fluid. The 2019 manual specifies GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid and a brake fluid replacement every five years. Do not top off a low reservoir to make a light go away; adding fluid does not fix a leak, and it overfills the system when new pads push the pistons back.

Torque every fastener, including wheel nuts, to the values in the factory service manual. Buick notes that properly torqued wheel nuts help prevent brake pulsation.

How Hard Is the Job?

Reading codes and cleaning or reseating a connector is a driveway job for anyone with an ABS-capable scan tool. A wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate DIY job with basic hand tools, although a seized sensor can break in the knuckle. A hub and bearing replacement is harder: a large axle nut, rusted hub bolts, and on the rear, the EPB service procedure. If the scan points to the ABS module or pump, that repair generally needs dealer-level programming, so it is a shop job for most owners.

When we checked, NHTSA's recall database listed no brake or ABS recalls for the 2018, 2019 or 2020 Enclave; recalls for these years cover other systems. That makes an ABS light a normal repair item rather than a free recall fix, but run your own VIN on NHTSA's site to confirm for your vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive my Enclave with the ABS light on?

If the ABS light is the only light on, Buick says the regular brakes still work but antilock does not. You can drive it carefully to a repair, but expect wheels to lock more easily in a hard stop, especially on wet or icy roads. If the red brake warning light is on as well, have it inspected right away.

Why are the ABS, traction control and StabiliTrak lights all on at once?

All three systems use the same wheel speed sensor signals. When one sensor or circuit fails, the module turns off every system that depends on it, so one fault can light up several warnings.

Can new brake pads or rotors turn on the ABS light?

New pads and rotors do not normally set ABS codes, but the work around them can. A sensor wire pulled or pinched during the job, a sensor knocked loose, or debris left on the sensor tip are common reasons the light appears right after a brake job.

Will disconnecting the battery reset the ABS light?

It may clear the light temporarily, but if the fault is still there the module will find it again on the next self-test or drive. Reading the stored code first tells you which wheel to look at.

What brake fluid does the 2018-2020 Enclave use?

The 2019 Enclave owner's manual specifies GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container, with replacement every five years.
