When the ABS light comes on in a 2017-2024 Chevrolet Camaro, the car's electronic brake control module has found a fault and switched the antilock function off. If the ABS light is the only warning lit, you still have normal braking but no antilock; if the red brake system light is on with it, there is also a problem with the base brakes and the car should not be driven. The most common trigger is a lost wheel speed sensor signal, from a bad sensor, damaged wiring or debris on the encoder ring, followed by low brake fluid.
How ABS Works on the Sixth-Generation Camaro
Chevrolet's owner's manual for this generation of Camaro describes ABS as an electronic system that checks itself each time you drive away. During that self-check you may hear a brief motor or clicking noise and feel the brake pedal move slightly; GM states this is normal and is not a fault.
While you drive, the system watches the speed of each wheel through a wheel speed sensor at every corner. If one wheel starts slowing faster than the others under hard braking, the module works the brake at that wheel so the tire keeps rolling and you can still steer. The same wheel speed signals feed traction control and StabiliTrak, which is why an ABS fault often brings the traction control or StabiliTrak light on at the same time.
The Camaro's base brake system is split into two hydraulic circuits, so if one circuit fails the other can still stop the car. That is separate from ABS: ABS only modulates pressure the hydraulic system already makes.
What Each Warning Light Combination Means
The owner's manual is specific about what the lights are telling you, and the combination matters more than any single lamp.
| Lights on | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| ABS light only | Normal brakes work; antilock is off | Stop safely, restart the engine; if it stays on or returns, have it scanned |
| ABS and red brake system light | Antilock is off and there is a problem with the regular brakes | Do not keep driving; GM advises towing if the brake light stays on after stopping |
| ABS plus traction control / StabiliTrak | A shared input (usually a wheel speed signal) has been lost | Scan the brake module for chassis (C) codes |
| Service electric parking brake light | The parking brake is working at a reduced level | Drivable, but have it serviced soon |
GM's first step for an ABS light that comes on while driving is simple: pull over when it is safe, turn the car off, and restart it to reset the system. If the light stays on or comes back, the car needs diagnosis. A chime may also sound when the ABS light comes on steady.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on a 2017-2024 Camaro
1. Wheel speed sensor or its wiring
The wheel speed sensors live right at the hubs, where they take heat, water, road salt and brake dust. Brake and Front End, a trade magazine for brake technicians, notes that broken wires are one of the leading causes of wheel speed sensor failures, and that weak or erratic signals confuse the ABS module. A harness that has been stretched or pinched during suspension or brake work is a frequent culprit, so if the light appeared right after a brake job, inspect the sensor wire routing and clips at that corner first.
2. Debris or corrosion on the encoder ring
Many modern GM cars read wheel speed from a magnetic encoder ring on the hub bearing instead of a toothed metal tone ring. GM service bulletin 17-NA-047 explains that ferrous metallic debris stuck to that encoder ring can set wheel speed sensor codes (C0035 through C0050) and light the ABS, Service Traction Control and Service StabiliTrak warnings, and the fix it gives is to inspect and clean the debris off the ring. That bulletin officially lists the earlier 2010-2015 Camaro along with many other GM models, not the 2016-and-later car, but the same failure mode is worth ruling out on any GM with a magnetic encoder. Clean it with a soft brush or mild detergent, never a magnetized tool.
3. Worn hub bearing
The wheel speed sensor only works if the gap between its tip and the encoder stays tight. A worn hub bearing with excessive end play changes that gap and weakens the signal, which can set an intermittent ABS fault before the bearing gets noisy. If one corner keeps setting the same code after the sensor and wiring check out, check that wheel for bearing play.
4. Low brake fluid
GM's manual says there are only two reasons the Camaro's brake fluid level drops: normal pad wear or a leak. Low fluid normally brings the red brake warning light on, and Power Stop lists low fluid among the causes of an ABS light as well. Do not simply top it off: GM specifically warns that adding fluid does not fix a leak, and topping off fluid that dropped from pad wear will overfill the reservoir when new pads push the caliper pistons back.
5. Fuse, module or pump problems
Less often the fault is a blown fuse, a failing ABS hydraulic pump, or the electronic brake control module itself. These are the expensive answers, which is why sensors, wiring and fluid should always be ruled out first.
How to Diagnose It
- Note which lights are on. ABS alone is a different job than ABS plus the red brake light.
- Check the fluid. On a level surface the level should sit between the minimum and maximum marks. A low level with thin pads points to wear; a low level with good pads points to a leak.
- Scan the brake module. A basic engine-code reader often cannot see ABS codes. You need a scan tool that reads chassis (C) codes from the brake control module. The code will usually name the corner.
- Compare live wheel speeds. With a capable scan tool, drive slowly and watch all four wheel speed readings. The one that drops out, reads zero or jumps around is your problem corner.
- Inspect that corner. Look at the connector, the harness along the knuckle and the sensor tip, and check the encoder for metal debris or rust. Then check the hub bearing for play.
Fixing It and What to Replace Together
If the sensor itself has failed, it is replaced as a unit. If the encoder is part of the hub bearing and it is corroded or damaged, or the bearing is loose, the hub assembly is the repair. Tighten hub bolts and axle nuts with a torque wrench to the values in the factory service manual, not with an impact gun.
Because you are already at the wheel, it is a good time to measure the pads and rotors. If the pads are near the end, install new 2017-2024 Camaro front ceramic brake pads, and look at our brake rotors if the discs are grooved or below minimum thickness. If the fluid was low because of a leak, the fix is in the brake lines, brake hoses or a brake caliper, not the reservoir.
When the hydraulic system is opened, refill with GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid from a clean, sealed container, which is what GM specifies for this Camaro. GM warns against silicone or DOT 5 fluid. For track use, GM recommends switching to a high-performance fluid with a dry boiling point above 279 degrees C (534 degrees F). Because brake fluid absorbs water over time, replace it on the interval in the maintenance schedule.
How Hard Is This Job?
Checking fluid and reading codes is driveway work for anyone with an ABS-capable scan tool. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate job: wheel off, unbolt the sensor, and carefully route and clip the new harness. A hub bearing replacement is more involved and needs correct torque specs. Module or pump faults, and any work that requires bleeding the ABS unit, are best left to a shop with factory-level scan software.

Is it safe to drive a Camaro with the ABS light on?
If the ABS light is the only warning, GM says the car has regular brakes but no antilock function, so drive gently, leave more following distance and get it scanned soon. If the red brake system light is also on, do not keep driving.
Why did the ABS light come on right after a brake job?
The most likely reason is a wheel speed sensor wire that was pulled, pinched or left unclipped, or a sensor that was knocked out of position. Check that corner's harness and connector before anything else.
Why are the ABS and traction control lights on together?
Traction control and StabiliTrak use the same wheel speed signals as ABS. When one signal is lost, the module disables those systems and lights their warnings too.
Can low brake fluid turn on the ABS light?
It can contribute, although low fluid more commonly lights the red brake warning. Find out why the level is low before adding anything: worn pads and leaks are the only two causes GM lists.
What brake fluid does the 2017-2024 Camaro use?
GM specifies GM approved DOT 3 brake fluid, as marked on the reservoir cap. Do not use silicone or DOT 5 fluid.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?
If the fault is still there, the light will come back once the system runs its self-check again. Clear codes only after the repair, then confirm with a test drive.
