2017-2022 Kia Sportage Brake Caliper Problems and Replacement

Brake caliper on a disc rotor for a 2017-2022 Kia Sportage

Caliper trouble on a 2017-2022 Kia Sportage usually shows up as a pull to one side, a hot wheel with a burning smell, or pads worn much thinner on one side than the other. Most of the time the cause is a sticking piston or seized slide pins. On the rear it also matters which parking brake your Sportage has, a foot pedal or the electronic parking brake (EPB), because that changes which replacement caliper you need and how the rear job is done.

How the Brakes Work on the 2017-2022 Sportage

This generation of Sportage uses disc brakes at all four wheels, with ABS standard on every trim. Kia's published 2020 specifications list the sizes below. The SX Turbo gets a larger front brake to go with its 2.0L turbo engine, while the rear brakes are the same size across the lineup.

Trim (2020 model year) Front disc Rear disc Parking brake
LX, S 12.0 in x 1.0 in 11.9 in x 0.4 in Foot pedal
EX 12.0 in x 1.0 in 11.9 in x 0.4 in Foot pedal, EPB with Auto Hold optional
SX Turbo 12.6 in x 1.1 in 11.9 in x 0.4 in EPB with Auto Hold standard

The front calipers are floating calipers: the piston pushes the inner pad against the rotor, and the caliper body slides on two guide pins to pull the outer pad in. The rear calipers work the same way, but they also serve as the parking brake. On foot-pedal cars a cable works a mechanism in the rear caliper; on EPB cars an electric motor-and-gear actuator applies the rear pads when you pull the switch or when Auto Hold calls for it. Trim content changed from year to year, so look at your console: a small switch marked with a P means EPB, and a pedal to the left of the brake pedal means a cable parking brake.

Symptoms of a Bad Caliper

  • Pulling while braking. A front caliper that is not clamping as hard as its partner, or one that is dragging, pulls the Sportage toward one side.
  • A hot wheel and burning smell. After a drive, one wheel much hotter than the others, or a burnt smell and even smoke from one corner, points to a caliper that is not releasing.
  • Feels like the parking brake is on. Haynes describes a seized caliper making the car feel down on power, which is exactly what brake drag does.
  • Uneven pad wear. An inner pad worn far thinner than the outer pad on the same wheel means the caliper is not sliding. One wheel wearing much faster than the other side means that caliper is dragging.
  • Fluid on the inside of the wheel or tire. A leaking piston seal or bleeder lets fluid out, the reservoir level drops, and the pedal can go soft.
  • EPB warning light (EPB cars). If the EPB malfunction indicator stays on, or the parking brake light blinks or does not come on after you pull the switch, Kia's manual says the parking brake is not applied and the system needs to be checked. That is an actuator or electrical fault, not a worn pad, so scan it before buying parts.

What Causes Sportage Caliper Problems

Haynes puts the main cause plainly: inactivity combined with corrosion. Calipers live in water, salt and heat, and they rarely get serviced. The common failure points are:

  • Seized guide pins. The grease dries out or a torn boot lets water in, rust forms, and the caliper can no longer float. The inner pad then does all the work and wears out early.
  • Sticking piston. Moisture in old brake fluid corrodes the piston and bore from the inside, and a torn dust boot lets road grime in from the outside. The piston clamps but does not fully retract.
  • Rusted pad abutments. Rust builds up under the pad clips on the caliper bracket and pinches the pads so they cannot slide back. This one is fixed with cleaning and a new hardware kit, not a caliper.
  • Driving with the EPB applied. Kia's owner's manual warns that driving with the EPB on causes excessive pad and rotor wear, and the heat that builds up is hard on rear caliper seals.
  • A collapsing flexible hose. An old rubber brake hose can act like a check valve and hold pressure on a caliper. If a new caliper still drags, suspect the hose.

The 21V-137 Recall: A Brake Module Issue, Not a Caliper

Kia recalled certain 2017-2021 Sportage models, along with the 2017-2019 Cadenza, under NHTSA campaign 21V-137 (Kia campaign SC206). The problem is in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU), the ABS and stability control module, whose electrical circuit may short and cause an engine compartment fire. The remedy is new fuses in the electrical junction box, plus a HECU software update on vehicles with the EPB. Until the repair is done, NHTSA's notice advises owners to park outside and away from structures. Kia's filing called the recall precautionary, with no known reported fires, crashes or injuries at the time.

This recall does not replace calipers, but it matters for brake diagnosis: an ABS or EPB warning on these years can be module-related, so run the VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls or with a Kia dealer and confirm the recall work is done before chasing a caliper.

The Fix: Which Caliper and What to Replace With It

If the pins are only dry, cleaning them, fitting new boots and re-greasing with a silicone-based brake grease can save the caliper. If the piston is sticking, the bore is pitted or the caliper leaks, replace it. Haynes notes that rebuilding can work when corrosion is mild, but a new caliper is the safer long-term fix because the corrosion that caused the seizure does not go away.

Replace calipers in axle pairs so both sides clamp evenly. For the rear of a 2017-2022 Sportage we carry a rear brake caliper pair with brackets for the 2017-2022 Kia Sportage. Before ordering any rear caliper, confirm whether your car has the foot-pedal parking brake or the EPB, because the two rear calipers are not interchangeable. For fronts, browse our brake calipers and match the SX Turbo's larger front brake separately from the LX, S and EX.

A caliper that failed from heat or drag has almost always damaged the pads and often the rotor too. Replace or at least inspect along with it:

  • Pads on both sides of the axle, since pads that have been overheated or soaked in fluid will not recover. See our ceramic brake pads.
  • Rotors that are heat-spotted, grooved or below minimum thickness. If both pads and rotors are due, the 2017-2022 Sportage front and rear brake kit covers all four corners.
  • Pad clips and pin boots from a brake hardware kit.
  • The flexible hose if it is cracked, swollen or suspected of holding pressure; see brake hoses.
  • Brake fluid: a new caliper has to be bled, and it is a good time for a full flush. Use the fluid specification printed on the reservoir cap.

How Hard Is the Job?

A front caliper swap on a Sportage is a manageable driveway job for someone who has done pads before: the bracket bolts, the caliper guide bolts, the brake hose fitting, then bleeding. Torque every bolt to the value in the factory service manual, and bleed until the pedal is firm with no air.

The rear is where EPB cars differ. The EPB actuator controls the piston, so the system has to be put into its service or release mode with a scan tool, or through the procedure in the service manual, before the rear caliper comes off or the piston is retracted. Never force an EPB piston back with a clamp or a wind-back tool; that can damage the actuator. After the job the EPB has to be re-applied and checked, and the warning lights must be off. Foot-pedal cars are simpler: adjust the parking brake per the service manual after the caliper is installed. If you do not have a scan tool that supports Kia EPB service, the rear of an EX or SX Turbo with EPB is a reasonable job to hand to a shop.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my Kia Sportage pulling to one side when I brake?

The most common cause is one front caliper sticking or its slide pins seizing, so that side clamps harder or drags. Uneven tire pressure, a collapsed brake hose or contaminated pads can do the same, so compare the pad wear pattern and wheel heat side to side before replacing parts.

Does my 2017-2022 Sportage have an electronic parking brake?

It depends on trim. For the 2020 model, Kia lists the EPB with Auto Hold as standard on the SX Turbo and optional on the EX, while the LX and S use a foot-pedal parking brake. Look for a P switch on the console or a parking pedal left of the brake pedal.

Can I push back the rear caliper piston on an EPB Sportage?

Not by force. The EPB actuator has to be put into service mode with a compatible scan tool or the factory procedure first. Forcing the piston back can break the actuator.

Should I replace calipers in pairs?

Yes. A new caliper beside an old, corroded one can clamp unevenly and cause a pull. Replace both on the axle and fit new pads at the same time.

Is the Sportage HECU recall related to my calipers?

No. Recall 21V-137 covers a possible short circuit in the ABS and stability control module on certain 2017-2021 Sportage models. It can matter for warning lights, so confirm it has been done using your VIN, but it does not involve the calipers.

Can I just rebuild my old caliper?

You can if the bore and piston are clean and only the seals are tired. If the piston or bore is pitted or rusted, a replacement caliper is the more reliable repair.
