2016-2018 Lincoln MKX ABS Light On: Common Causes and Fixes

ABS warning light diagnosis guide for the 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

When the ABS light comes on in a 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX, the anti-lock system has found a fault and switched itself off. Your normal brakes still work, but the wheels can lock in a panic stop. The most common cause is a wheel speed sensor problem (the sensor, its wiring, or the toothed ring it reads), and the fix starts with pulling the stored code, not with buying parts.

One thing matters more than anything else in this guide: if the red BRAKE warning light is on together with the amber ABS light, treat it as a hydraulic problem first. On these model years that includes checking whether your MKX is covered by the open rear brake hose recall described below.

What the ABS Light Means on the MKX

The second-generation MKX (2016-2018) has four-wheel ABS, traction control, stability control and an electric parking brake, all sharing information from the same wheel speed sensors. Lincoln's own owner's manual is direct about what the amber ABS lamp means: it lights briefly at start-up as a bulb check, and if it stays on or comes on while driving, the system has a malfunction. You keep normal braking without ABS, unless the red brake system warning lamp is also lit. The manual's advice is to have the system checked.

The red BRAKE lamp is a different message. Lincoln says it lights when the parking brake is applied, and if it comes on while driving with the parking brake released, it indicates a low brake fluid level or a brake system malfunction, and the vehicle should be checked immediately. The manual warns that driving with that lamp on can cause a significant decrease in braking performance.

What you see What it usually means How urgent
Amber ABS light only ABS disabled by a sensor, wiring, module or tone ring fault; base brakes still work Diagnose soon; drive gently and leave extra room
Amber ABS plus red BRAKE light Possible low fluid, leak or hydraulic fault Stop driving and inspect immediately
ABS plus traction and stability lights A wheel speed signal is missing; those systems depend on the same sensors Diagnose soon
Electric park brake lamp lit or flashing A fault in the electric parking brake system itself Have it checked; see the manual's park brake section

Common Causes, Most Likely First

1. Wheel speed sensor faults

Each corner of the MKX has a sensor that reports wheel speed to the ABS module. If one signal drops out, goes erratic or disagrees with the other three, the module sets a code and turns the ABS light on. Brake and Front End, a long-running trade magazine for brake technicians, lists the usual culprits: metallic debris from pads and rotors sticking to the sensor tip, a damaged or nicked tone ring, an incorrect air gap between the sensor and the ring, and loose or corroded connectors. Sensors sit right behind the wheels, so road salt, water and heat work on them year after year, which is why a single corner is almost always the source.

2. Damaged wiring or connectors

The sensor harness runs along the knuckle and rear suspension, where it flexes with every bump. Chafed insulation, a pinched lead after suspension work, or green corrosion inside a connector will produce the same code as a dead sensor. Always look at the wiring before replacing a sensor.

3. Tone ring or hub problems

The sensor reads a toothed or magnetic ring on the hub or axle. A cracked ring, rust swelling between teeth, or a worn wheel bearing that lets the ring wobble can make one wheel read wrong. If the code points to a corner that also growls or hums at speed, suspect the hub.

4. Low brake fluid, a leak, or the rear hose recall

Low fluid brings on the red BRAKE lamp, and the MKX can also display a Brake Fluid Level Low message. On these model years it has special weight: NHTSA campaign 25V544 (Ford recall 25S87) covers certain 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX and 2015-2018 Ford Edge vehicles because the rear brake jounce hose may rupture and leak brake fluid, which can lengthen stopping distance. When NHTSA acknowledged the recall, Ford listed the remedy as under development. Enter your VIN on nhtsa.gov or call Lincoln to see whether your SUV is included and whether the repair is available yet. If you see wet fluid near a rear wheel, do not drive the vehicle.

5. Mismatched tires or the spare

The ABS module compares wheel speeds, so a very different tire size can confuse it. Lincoln's manual tells owners not to use a spare of a different size than the one supplied and warns that the AWD system may shut itself off with the mini spare installed. Put the repaired road tire back on and cycle the ignition before chasing a sensor fault.

6. ABS module, pump or low battery voltage

Less common, but a failing hydraulic control unit or weak charging voltage can also set ABS codes. These show up as module or voltage codes rather than a single wheel's sensor code, which is why the scan comes first.

How to Diagnose It Step by Step

  1. Check the fluid level in the reservoir under the hood and look for wet spots at each wheel, especially the rear hoses.
  2. Scan for codes with an ABS-capable scan tool. A basic engine code reader often cannot see ABS codes. The code tells you which wheel and whether the fault is the circuit, the signal, or the module.
  3. Watch live wheel speed data on a short, slow drive. The bad sensor reads zero, drops out, or jumps around while the others agree.
  4. Inspect the suspect corner: remove the wheel, follow the harness, unplug and check the connector, and clean debris off the sensor tip.
  5. Test the sensor per the service manual. Brake and Front End notes that passive magnetic sensors and active Hall-effect sensors produce different signals, so use the test procedure written for your sensor type rather than a generic ohm reading.
  6. Clear the code and road test. If it returns at the same wheel after a new sensor, look harder at the tone ring, hub and wiring.

The Fix and What to Replace Together

Most MKX ABS lights end with one repair at one corner: a new wheel speed sensor, a repaired harness or connector, or a hub assembly if the ring or bearing is the problem. Replace only the failed corner; sensors are not a set-of-four item.

Brake work and ABS faults overlap more than people expect. Sensors get damaged when calipers are hung on their hoses or harnesses get pulled during a pad job, and pad and rotor dust is one of the debris sources that coats a sensor tip. If you are into the brakes anyway, it is a good time to renew worn parts. We carry a complete front and rear brake kit for the 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX, plus replacement brake pads and brake rotors if you only need one axle. If you find a leak that the recall does not cover, see our brake hoses and brake hardware kits.

Any time the hydraulic system is opened, refill and bleed with the correct fluid. Lincoln specifies Motorcraft DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) High Performance Brake Fluid, or an equivalent meeting Ford specification WSS-M6C65-A2, and warns that other fluids may degrade brake performance. After major hydraulic work, follow the factory bleeding procedure, which may call for a scan tool to cycle the ABS unit.

How Hard Is the Job?

Reading codes and cleaning or replacing a bolt-in wheel speed sensor is a reasonable driveway job for someone who can safely lift the vehicle and remove a wheel, provided you have a scan tool that reads ABS codes. Seized sensors can break when removed, so penetrating oil and patience help. Hub replacement, wiring repair inside the harness, and anything involving the ABS module or a hydraulic bleed are better left to a shop with Ford-capable diagnostics. A recall repair should always go to a Lincoln or Ford dealer, where it is done at no charge once the remedy is released.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to drive my MKX with the ABS light on?

If only the amber ABS light is on, Lincoln says normal braking remains, just without anti-lock control. Drive gently, leave extra following distance, and get it diagnosed soon. If the red BRAKE light is on too, stop and inspect before driving further.

Can new brake pads or rotors turn on the ABS light?

The parts themselves do not, but the job can. A pinched or stretched sensor wire, an unplugged connector, or a sensor knocked out of position during the repair is a common reason the light appears right after brake work.

Why are my ABS, traction control and stability lights all on at once?

All three systems rely on the same wheel speed sensors. One bad sensor signal disables all of them, so the whole group of lights usually shares one cause.

Does the rear brake hose recall affect my 2016-2018 MKX?

NHTSA campaign 25V544 lists certain 2016-2018 Lincoln MKX vehicles. Not every vehicle in those years is included, so check your VIN at nhtsa.gov or with a Lincoln dealer.

Will clearing the code fix the ABS light?

Only temporarily if the fault is real. The module rechecks the sensors every drive and will turn the light back on when it sees the problem again.

What brake fluid does the 2016-2018 MKX use?

Lincoln's owner's manual calls for DOT 4 Low Viscosity (LV) High Performance Brake Fluid meeting Ford specification WSS-M6C65-A2.
