The brake caliper problems on a 2014-2020 Acura MDX split by model year. The 2017-2020 trucks have an electric parking brake motor built into each rear caliper, so a stuck actuator, a parking brake warning, or a rear caliper that will not retract are the common complaints. Those same 2017-2019 MDX (and 2017-2018 MDX Sport Hybrid) rear calipers were also the subject of a safety recall for air released from poorly plated pistons, which caused a soft or sinking pedal. The 2014-2016 trucks use a foot-pedal parking brake and behave like conventional calipers: sticking slide pins, seized pistons and leaking seals.

How the MDX Caliper Setup Differs by Year

Every third-generation MDX uses disc brakes at all four corners. What changes is how the parking brake is applied, and that decides how hard a rear caliper job is.

Model years Parking brake What it means for rear caliper work
2014-2016 Foot pedal (the owner's manual says to press the parking brake with your foot) No electronics at the caliper. Pad and caliper replacement follows a normal procedure; the parking brake must be fully released first.
2017-2020 Electric parking brake switch with automatic brake hold A motor on the back of each rear caliper drives a spindle that pushes the piston. The spindle must be returned with a scan tool (Acura calls it brake pad maintenance mode) before the piston can be pushed back.

If you are not sure which system your truck has, look at the console. A small switch you pull up to set the parking brake means you have the electric system and rear calipers with actuators. A pedal to the left of the brake pedal means you have the earlier mechanical setup.

Common MDX Caliper Problems and Their Symptoms

1. Soft or sinking brake pedal (2017-2019 recall)

NHTSA campaign 18V777 covers certain 2017-2019 MDX and 2017-2018 MDX Sport Hybrid models. Acura Service Bulletin 18-061 explains that the pedal can feel soft or travel to the floor with low effort because air bubbles are released into the fluid from improperly plated rear caliper pistons. The fix is not a new caliper: the dealer bleeds the entire system, then does a special rear caliper bleed, free of charge. If your MDX falls in that range and the pedal feels long, run your VIN on nhtsa.gov before buying parts.

2. Electric parking brake warnings (2017-2020)

The 2020 owner's guide says that when the parking brake indicator blinks along with the electric parking brake system indicator, there is a problem with the system and the parking brake may not be set. Causes include a failed actuator motor, a damaged connector or wiring at the rear caliper, a weak battery, or a rear pad job done without entering maintenance mode. A scan tool that reads the electric parking brake module tells you which side set the fault, so you replace the right caliper rather than guessing.

3. Sticking caliper (all years)

A caliper that does not release fully drags its pads on the rotor. Look for:

  • The MDX pulling to one side while cruising or when braking
  • One wheel much hotter than the others after a drive, often with a burning smell
  • One pad (usually the inner) worn far thinner than its partner
  • Blue heat marks or uneven wear on one rotor
  • Lower fuel economy with no other cause

Much of the sticking comes from corroded or dry slide pins and torn pin boots, not the piston. Pins can often be cleaned and relubricated. A piston that will not move back smoothly (on the front, or on a 2014-2016 rear), or a torn piston dust boot with rust behind it, calls for a caliper.

4. Leaking caliper (all years)

Wetness on the inside of the wheel, a fluid level that keeps dropping, or the red brake system light, which the owner's guide ties to low brake fluid, all point to a leak. A leaking piston seal means a caliper replacement, and it contaminates the pads on that side, so they must be replaced too.

What Causes MDX Calipers to Fail

  • Old brake fluid. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and water corrodes pistons and bores from the inside. Acura specifies DOT 3 for this truck in its bulletin and warns against reusing drained fluid.
  • Road salt. Rust-belt MDXs lose slide pin boots and piston dust boots, then the pins and pistons corrode.
  • Forced pistons. Pushing an electric parking brake rear piston back without retracting the spindle can damage the actuator or the internal mechanism.
  • Heat and age. Seals harden after years of heat cycles, so drag and seepage become more likely on high-mileage trucks.

Replacing a Caliper on a 2014-2020 MDX

Front calipers on every year, and rear calipers on 2014-2016 models, are a conventional job: support the vehicle, remove the wheel, disconnect the hose (use new sealing washers on a banjo fitting), remove the caliper bolts, and move pads and hardware over to the new unit. Tighten every bolt to the value in the factory service manual.

A 2017-2020 rear caliper needs a few more steps, taken from Acura's own procedure in Bulletin 18-061:

  1. With the ignition on, use a scan tool that supports the Acura electric parking brake to enter brake pad maintenance mode. This returns the spindle to its initial position.
  2. Turn the ignition off and disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Unplug the electric parking brake actuator connector before removing the caliper.
  4. Install the caliper, reconnect the actuator, pump the pedal several times, and reconnect the battery.
  5. Turn the ignition on, go back into the maintenance mode function with the scan tool and follow its prompts, then apply and release the parking brake.

Then bleed the brakes. Acura's sequence is front driver, front passenger, rear passenger, rear driver, and the bulletin lists bleed screw torque at 8.3 N-m (6.1 lbf-ft) for the front calipers and 11 N-m (8 lbf-ft) for the rear. Use fresh DOT 3 from a sealed container.

Difficulty: a front caliper is a moderate driveway job. A 2017-2020 rear caliper is manageable for an experienced DIYer who owns a compatible scan tool; without one, it belongs in a shop. Acura's own labor allowance just for bleeding the system under this recall was 1.6 hours, which shows how involved the rear procedure is.

What to Replace at the Same Time

  • Pads on the same axle. Pads that sat against a leaking or dragging caliper are contaminated or unevenly worn. See our 2014-2020 Acura MDX front ceramic brake pads or browse all brake pads.
  • Rotors that are scored, heat-marked or below minimum thickness. Dragging calipers overheat rotors. Shop brake rotors.
  • Hardware and slide pin boots. New clips and boots keep the new caliper sliding freely. See brake hardware kits.
  • The caliper on the other side when it is just as old. Replacing calipers in pairs keeps braking balanced. Browse brake calipers.
  • Rubber brake hoses if they are cracked or swollen, since the hose is already disconnected. See brake hoses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is my 2014-2020 MDX covered by the brake caliper recall?

Only certain 2017-2019 MDX and 2017-2018 MDX Sport Hybrid models are in campaign 18V777. The remedy is a free brake bleed, not new calipers. Enter your VIN at nhtsa.gov or ask an Acura dealer to confirm.

Can I change the rear pads on a 2017-2020 MDX without a scan tool?

Acura's procedure uses a scan tool to enter brake pad maintenance mode before the piston is pushed back. Forcing the piston without that step risks damaging the actuator. Many aftermarket scan tools include this function, or a shop can do it.

Why is my MDX showing an electric parking brake problem?

It can be an actuator motor, a wiring or connector fault at a rear caliper, low battery voltage, or an incomplete service procedure. Read the codes in the electric parking brake module before buying parts.

Does a new rear caliper for a 2017-2020 MDX include the motor?

Some replacement calipers ship with the actuator and some are sold without it. Check the listing: if the motor is not included, move your old actuator over as long as it works correctly.

What brake fluid does the MDX use?

Acura's service bulletin for this generation specifies DOT 3 brake fluid from an unopened container, and says never to reuse drained fluid.

Should I replace calipers in pairs?

It is not required, but on a high-mileage MDX the other caliper on the axle has the same age and exposure. Replacing both keeps braking even from side to side.
