Caliper trouble on a 2014-2019 Kia Soul usually shows up as a pull to one side, one pad worn far thinner than its partner, a hot or smelly wheel, or a leak at the piston boot. Both axles use single-piston sliding calipers, so most "bad caliper" complaints are really seized guide pins or a sticking piston, and the rear calipers need special care because the parking brake lives inside them. Below is how the system works on this generation, how to tell which part has failed, and what to replace together.
How the Brake Calipers Work on the 2014-2019 Soul
Kia's service manual for this generation (the PS-body Soul) lists disc brakes at all four corners with a single-piston caliper at each wheel. The front uses a ventilated rotor and a larger piston; the rear uses a solid rotor and a smaller piston. The parking brake is a ball-in-ramp (BIR) mechanism built into the rear caliper and actuated by a lever, not a separate drum-in-hat shoe set.
| Spec (factory manual) | Front | Rear |
|---|---|---|
| Rotor type | Ventilated disc | Solid disc |
| Rotor diameter | 280 mm (11.02 in) | 262 mm (10.32 in) |
| Rotor thickness new / service limit | 23 mm / 21 mm | 10 mm / 8.4 mm |
| Caliper | Single piston, 57.2 mm bore | Single piston, 34 mm bore |
| Pad thickness new / service limit | 10.5 mm / 2.0 mm | 10.0 mm / 2.0 mm |
| Guide rod bolt torque | 15.9-23.1 lb-ft | 15.9-23.1 lb-ft |
A single-piston caliper only pushes on the inner pad. The caliper body then slides inward on two guide pins to pull the outer pad against the rotor. That sliding motion is the weak point: if a pin corrodes or its boot tears and lets in water and road salt, the caliper stops self-centering, and one pad does all the work.
Symptoms of a Failing Caliper on a Kia Soul
- Uneven pad wear. The inner pad worn to the backing plate while the outer pad still has life (or the reverse) is the classic sign of a binding guide pin. Brake and Front End's technical coverage of slider calipers ties this exact wear pattern to bent, corroded or dry mounting pins.
- Pulling under braking. A seized piston or pin on one side changes clamping force side to side, so the car tugs toward the stronger or dragging corner.
- A hot wheel or burning smell. After a drive, one wheel that is noticeably hotter than the others, often with brake dust piled on it, points to a caliper that is not releasing.
- Fluid on the inside of the wheel or tire. A wet piston boot or a damp patch at the bleeder or hose fitting means the caliper seal is leaking. That is a replace-now condition.
- Parking brake that will not hold or will not release. Because the rear calipers carry the BIR parking brake, a rear caliper with a stuck mechanism can drag even when the lever is fully down.
- Soft pedal and low fluid with no visible caliper leak. On this generation, check the steel brake lines under the car before blaming a caliper (see the corrosion campaign below).
Caliper, Guide Pins or Brake Lines: Finding the Real Cause
Start with the pads. Pull the wheel, look through the caliper window, and compare the inner and outer pad thickness against the 2.0 mm service limit. A big difference between the two pads on the same corner points to the slides. Remove the guide rod bolt, pivot or lift the caliper off, and try to move each guide pin in its bore by hand. A pin that will not slide, or has rust and dried grease on it, is the cause, not the caliper itself.
If the pins move freely but the wheel still drags, the piston is the suspect. A torn dust boot lets moisture reach the piston surface, and rust there keeps the piston from retracting. Any wetness around the boot confirms the seal has failed. At that point a rebuilt or new caliper is usually the better repair than resealing a pitted piston.
Also rule out the lines. Kia's Voluntary Service Campaign SC334, filed with NHTSA in June 2025, covers certain 2014-2019 Souls built from July 21, 2013 through December 24, 2018 that were sold in or are registered in 28 heavy road-salt states, including Ohio, Michigan, Pennsylvania, New York and Illinois. Kia states that brake line corrosion can cause low brake fluid, a gradually softening pedal and a brake fluid warning light. The dealer inspects the lines, replaces them if needed and adds underbody anti-corrosion material at no charge. If your Soul has a sinking pedal and low fluid in a salt state, have the campaign checked before buying calipers.
Replacing a Caliper: Front vs Rear
Front calipers
The front job is straightforward. Per the factory procedure, remove the wheel, loosen the guide rod bolt, pivot the caliper body up, and service the pads, shims and pad retainers in the carrier. The piston is pushed straight back with a compressor tool. To swap the whole caliper, you also disconnect the brake hose at the caliper (use new sealing washers on a banjo fitting) and remove the caliper from the carrier. Tighten the guide rod bolt to 15.9-23.1 lb-ft and the lug nuts to 65.1-79.6 lb-ft, the values Kia lists.
Rear calipers
The rear is where people get caught out. Because the ball-in-ramp parking brake is inside the caliper, the manual says to rotate the caliper piston while pushing it in. Forcing it straight back with a C-clamp can damage the parking brake mechanism. Use a caliper wind-back tool. When reinstalling, Kia specifies lining up the groove in the piston face with the center lobe on the back of the pad so the piston cannot turn out of position. Guide rod bolt torque is the same 15.9-23.1 lb-ft range as the front. Make sure the parking brake lever is fully released before starting, and check the parking brake cable connection at the caliper on a caliper swap.
Bleeding
Any time you open the hydraulic system, bleed that caliper until clean fluid with no air comes out. Kia specifies DOT 3 or DOT 4 fluid for this generation. Do not mix in DOT 5 silicone fluid.
Difficulty: a front caliper is a comfortable driveway job with basic hand tools, a torque wrench and a bleeder bottle. A rear caliper is moderate because of the wind-back piston and the parking brake connection.
What to Replace at the Same Time
- Pads on both sides of the axle. A seized caliper usually ruins its pads, and the axle should brake evenly. Browse brake pads or, for a quiet low-dust daily driver, ceramic brake pads. For the front of this generation we carry Bosch front ceramic pads for the 2014-2019 Kia Soul.
- Rotors, if they are below spec or heat-damaged. A dragging caliper can overheat a rotor. Measure thickness: replace a front rotor at 21 mm and a rear at 8.4 mm, per the manual. Shop brake rotors.
- Guide pins, boots and clips. A brake hardware kit is cheap insurance; reusing crusty pins is how a new caliper seizes again.
- Calipers in pairs. Replace both calipers on an axle when one has failed from age or corrosion, because the other has seen the same miles and salt. See our brake calipers.
- Flexible hoses. If a hose is cracked or swollen, change it while the system is open. See brake hoses.
Keeping the New Calipers Working
Clean the guide pins and their bores to bare metal, inspect the rubber boots, and lubricate with a high-temperature brake caliper grease that is safe for rubber. Lubricate the pad contact points on the carrier as well. In salt states, rinsing the underbody through winter protects both the calipers and the steel lines that Kia's campaign addresses. Check the pads and slides at every tire rotation so a sticking pin gets caught before it eats a pad.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I push the rear caliper piston back with a C-clamp on a 2014-2019 Soul?
No. The rear calipers contain the ball-in-ramp parking brake, and Kia's procedure calls for rotating the piston while pushing it in. Use a wind-back tool and align the piston groove with the pad lobe on reassembly.
Is my Soul's soft brake pedal a bad caliper?
It can be, but look for fluid first. If there is no wet caliper and you live in a salt state, the brake lines covered by Kia campaign SC334 are a likely source of the leak. A dealer will inspect them free for eligible vehicles.
Should I replace calipers in pairs?
Yes, when one has failed from corrosion or age. The calipers on an axle have the same exposure, and matched calipers keep braking even side to side.
What brake fluid does the 2014-2019 Kia Soul use?
Kia specifies DOT 3 or DOT 4. Bleed with fresh fluid from a sealed container after any caliper or hose replacement.
Why is my inner brake pad worn out but the outer pad looks fine?
The caliper is not sliding on its guide pins, so only the piston-side pad is doing the work. Clean or replace the pins and boots, lubricate them, and replace the pads on both sides of that axle.
