2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli Brake Upgrade Options

Performance brake pads for the 2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli

The best brake upgrade for a 2014-2016 Maserati Ghibli is usually not a bigger brake kit - it is the right pad compound on the Brembo hardware the car already has, fresh high-boiling-point fluid, and properly bedded rotors. Start by identifying which brake package your car has, because the base Ghibli and the Ghibli S use different front calipers and discs, and pads are not interchangeable between them.

What brakes your Ghibli came with

Maserati built the M157 Ghibli with two distinct brake packages at launch. According to Maserati's 2014 launch information, the Ghibli S runs 360 mm x 32 mm ventilated, cross-drilled Dual Cast front discs clamped by six-piston fixed alloy Brembo calipers, with four-piston fixed Brembo calipers at the rear. The standard Ghibli (the 330 hp 3.0L twin turbo, and the diesel sold in other markets) uses smaller 345 mm x 28 mm front discs with four-piston fixed calipers, and 320 mm x 22 mm rear discs with floating calipers. All versions use an electronic parking brake.

Model Engine output Front brakes Rear brakes
Ghibli (3.0L twin turbo) 330 hp 345 x 28 mm vented discs, 4-piston fixed calipers 320 x 22 mm discs, floating calipers
Ghibli S / S Q4 410 hp 360 x 32 mm vented, cross-drilled Dual Cast discs, 6-piston fixed Brembo calipers 4-piston fixed Brembo calipers, Dual Cast discs

The quickest way to tell them apart is to look through the front wheel: count the pistons (a six-piston caliper is visibly longer) or check the badge on the trunk lid. Because the pad shapes differ between the two calipers, always match your order to your exact model, not just the model year.

Upgrade option 1: a better pad compound

For most owners, pads make the biggest difference per dollar spent. The factory calipers are already fixed multi-piston units, so the clamping hardware is rarely the weak point on the street. What changes the feel is the friction material: how much bite it has cold, how it holds up when hot, and how much dust it throws on those large wheels.

Mixing compounds front to rear is common and fine, as long as the car still brakes in a balanced, straight line. Many owners run a more aggressive front pad with a quieter rear pad. You can browse more options in our performance and replacement brake pads.

Upgrade option 2: rotors

If your rotors are at or near minimum thickness, grooved, or causing a pulsing pedal, new rotors belong in the job. The Ghibli S already comes with cross-drilled front discs from the factory. For the base car, a slotted rotor is a popular upgrade. According to DBA, slots add out-gassing exit points and wipe dust and debris from between the pad and rotor, which helps prevent pad glazing and keeps friction consistent; DBA also says its slot pattern helps dampen vibration for a smoother pedal. Always replace rotors in axle pairs and check minimum thickness against the value cast on the rotor or listed in the factory service manual. See our brake rotors for current options.

Upgrade option 3: fluid and lines

Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, and wet fluid boils at a much lower temperature. Under federal standard FMVSS 116, DOT 4 fluid must have a dry boiling point of at least 230 C (446 F) and a wet boiling point of at least 155 C (311 F), versus 205 C (401 F) and 140 C (284 F) for DOT 3. On a heavy sedan making 330 to 410 hp, boiled fluid is what produces a long, soft pedal after repeated hard stops. Use the fluid specification in your owner's manual, flush it on the schedule Maserati lists, and flush it any time you install a more aggressive pad. Braided stainless brake lines firm up pedal feel further by reducing hose expansion under pressure.

What about a big brake kit?

Aftermarket big brake kits exist for the Ghibli, but they only make sense if you track the car regularly and have already exhausted pads, fluid and rotors. They often require larger wheels for clearance, cost far more, and change the car's brake balance. For a street-driven Ghibli, the factory Brembo hardware with a good pad, fresh DOT 4-rated fluid and healthy rotors is the upgrade path most owners should take.

Installation notes and what to replace at the same time

A pad swap on fixed calipers is a moderate job for a capable home mechanic: the pads come out after removing the retaining pins and spring clip, the pistons are pushed back evenly, and new pads slide in without removing the caliper. Rotor replacement requires removing the caliper, so torque every caliper and wheel fastener to the value in the factory service manual. The car uses an electronic parking brake, so follow the service procedure to put it into maintenance mode (usually with a compatible scan tool) before retracting the rear pistons - forcing them can damage the actuator.

  • Replace pad hardware (pins, clips, anti-rattle springs) if worn or corroded - see brake hardware kits.
  • Inspect the front wheel bearings while the wheels are off. NHTSA recall 16V649000 covered Ghibli front wheel bearings that may have insufficient hardness; confirm with a dealer that it has been completed on your VIN.
  • Flush the fluid, and inspect the flexible hoses for cracks or bulging.

After installation, bed the pads in. DBA's procedure: from about 30 mph, apply medium pressure down to about 5 mph without coming to a full stop, repeat 10 times with a 30-second cool-down between applications, then avoid heavy braking for the first 120 miles.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do the Ghibli and Ghibli S use the same brake pads?

No. The Ghibli S uses six-piston front calipers on 360 mm discs, while the base Ghibli uses four-piston front calipers on 345 mm discs, so the front pad shapes are different. Match pads to your exact model.

Are there any brake recalls on the 2014-2016 Ghibli?

NHTSA's recall data for the Ghibli shows no recalls on brake components. There is a front wheel bearing recall (16V649000), which is worth checking whenever you service the front brakes.

Will high-friction pads make more dust and noise?

Generally yes. A more aggressive compound trades some dust and noise for stronger bite and fade resistance. If the car is mostly a daily driver, a ceramic street pad is the quieter, cleaner choice.

Do I need special tools for the rear brakes?

The Ghibli has an electronic parking brake, so the rear calipers need to be put into service mode, usually with a scan tool, before the pistons can be retracted.

How often should I change the brake fluid?

Follow the interval in your Ghibli owner's manual, and flush it any time the car sees hard driving or you install new performance pads.
