An ABS light on a 2011-2014 Ford Edge means the anti-lock brake module has found a fault and switched anti-lock braking off; normal braking still works as long as the red brake warning light is not on too. The most common causes are a wheel speed sensor or its wiring, a damaged or rusted tone ring, a worn wheel bearing, a blown ABS fuse, or a fault in the ABS module itself. A scan tool that reads ABS codes tells you which one before you buy any parts.
How the ABS System Works on the 2011-2014 Edge
Every Edge from this generation has four-wheel anti-lock brakes tied into Ford's AdvanceTrac with Roll Stability Control. A speed sensor at each wheel reads a toothed tone ring that turns with the hub. The ABS module compares the four signals continuously. When one wheel slows much faster than the others under hard braking, the module pulses the brake pressure to that wheel through the hydraulic control unit so the tire keeps rolling and you keep steering.
Because stability control and traction control use the same wheel speed data, a bad sensor signal usually turns on more than one light. It is common to see the ABS light, the AdvanceTrac or traction control light, and sometimes a "Service AdvanceTrac" message in the display all at once from a single fault.
Ford's 2013 Edge owner guide explains the lamp logic plainly: the ABS light should come on briefly when you turn the key on, then go out. If it stays on or keeps flashing, a malfunction has been detected and the anti-lock system may be disabled. Normal braking is still functional unless the brake system warning light is also on.
ABS Light vs Red Brake Warning Light
These two lights mean very different things, and the difference decides whether you can keep driving.
| What you see | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Amber ABS light only | ABS (and usually stability control) is off; base brakes still work | Drive carefully, leave more stopping room, scan for ABS codes soon |
| Red brake light only, parking brake released | Low brake fluid or a brake system malfunction | Check the fluid level and have the system inspected right away |
| ABS light and red brake light together | Base brakes and anti-lock may both be affected | Do not keep driving; have it inspected before use |
| "Brake Fluid Level Low" message | Reservoir level is low | Inspect for leaks and worn pads immediately |
The owner guide warns that driving with the brake system warning light on is dangerous because braking performance can drop significantly and stopping distances get longer. The 2011-2014 Edge uses a foot-operated parking brake pedal, so first confirm the pedal is fully released. If the red light stays on after release, treat it as a brake problem, not a light problem.
Common Causes of an ABS Light on the Edge
Wheel speed sensor or wiring
This is the most frequent cause. The sensors live behind each wheel, right next to the brakes, where they take heat, water, road salt and grit. The wiring runs along the suspension and flexes every time the wheel moves. A chafed wire, a corroded connector, or a sensor that has failed internally will cut the signal. As the AA1Car diagnostic reference explains, a sensor or wiring failure usually disables the ABS and turns the warning light on.
Debris, rust, or a damaged tone ring
Wheel speed sensors are magnetic, so metallic debris collects on the sensor tip and weakens the signal. Rust can build up on the tone ring teeth, and a cracked or chipped tone ring gives the module an erratic reading. These faults often show up only at certain speeds or after the car sits in wet weather, which is why the light may come and go.
Worn wheel bearing
A worn hub bearing lets the tone ring move closer to and farther from the sensor as the wheel turns. That changing air gap produces a signal the module rejects. If you also hear a growl or hum that changes with speed or when you turn, check that corner's bearing before replacing the sensor.
Recent brake or suspension work
An ABS light that appears right after a brake job usually points to a disturbed sensor or harness: a connector not fully seated, a wire pulled tight or pinched when the caliper went back on, or a sensor knocked out of position. Retrace the work at the wheel that sets the code.
Blown fuse, low voltage, or the ABS module
The 2013 Edge owner guide lists three separate ABS fuses in the engine compartment fuse box: a 40A fuse for the ABS pump, a 25A fuse for the ABS valves, and a 10A fuse for the ABS module. A blown fuse or a weak battery can take the whole system offline and often sets several lights at once. If the fuses and battery are good and the module will not communicate with a scan tool, or the same internal fault returns immediately after clearing, the module or hydraulic control unit is the likely problem.
Low brake fluid
Low fluid normally turns on the red brake light rather than the ABS light, but both can appear. Fluid drops slowly as pads wear, because the caliper pistons move out to follow them. A reservoir that is suddenly low, or keeps dropping, means a leak.
How to Diagnose It Step by Step
- Read the ABS codes. A basic engine code reader often cannot see the ABS module. Use a scan tool that reads ABS and chassis codes. The code tells you which wheel and whether it is a signal, circuit, or module fault.
- Check the basics. Confirm the parking brake is released, check the brake fluid level, check the three ABS fuses, and test the battery.
- Inspect the flagged corner. Look at the sensor, the connector, and the full length of the wiring for rubbing, cracks, or corrosion. Pull the sensor, clean the tip and the bore, and look at the tone ring for rust buildup or broken teeth.
- Test the sensor signal. With a scan tool that shows live data, watch all four wheel speeds while driving slowly. The bad sensor reads zero, drops out, or disagrees with the others. AA1Car notes that active sensors cannot be judged by a resistance check alone; they must be tested with power applied and the wheel turning.
- Check the bearing. With the wheel off the ground, rock it top to bottom and spin it by hand. Play or roughness means the hub bearing is the root cause.
- Clear the codes and road test. The light should stay off through a drive that includes a few stops and turns. If it returns with the same code, the repair is not finished.
The Fix and What to Replace at the Same Time
Match the repair to the code. A damaged sensor or harness is replaced at that corner. A rusted tone ring or a loose bearing is usually handled by replacing the hub assembly. A bad module or hydraulic control unit is the largest repair and may need programming with a factory-level scan tool after installation.
Because the sensors sit right beside the brakes, an ABS repair is a good time to inspect the pads and rotors on that axle. If the pads are near their wear limit or the rotors are grooved or warped, doing them now saves pulling the same wheel twice. For 2.0L EcoBoost Edge owners, we carry parts listed to fit: the EBC Redstuff ceramic front brake pad set for the 2011-2014 Edge 2.0L, the EBC Yellowstuff rear brake pads for the 2011-2014 Edge 2.0L, and a matching pair of EBC USR slotted rear rotors for the 2011-2014 Edge 2.0L. For other engines, browse our brake pad collection and brake rotors by vehicle, and pick up a brake hardware kit so the new pads slide freely in the brackets.
If the brake fluid is dark or has not been changed in years, flush it while the brakes are apart. The 2013 owner guide specifies Motorcraft High Performance DOT 3 brake fluid (PM-1-C, meeting WSS-M6C62-A or WSS-M6C65-A1); check the specification page in your own year's guide before buying. Ford's brake fluid guidance warns never to add DOT 5 fluid to a vehicle that specifies DOT 3 or DOT 4.
How Hard Is the Job?
Reading codes, checking fuses, and cleaning a sensor are well within reach of a home mechanic with a scan tool. Replacing a wheel speed sensor is usually a moderate job: wheel off, remove the sensor, route the new harness exactly like the old one and secure it in every clip so it cannot touch the rotor or rub on the suspension. Rust can make an old sensor hard to pull out of its bore, so soak it with penetrant and work it out gently.
Hub bearing replacement is a bigger job that needs the right sockets and a torque wrench; tighten the axle nut and hub bolts to the values in the factory service manual. ABS module or hydraulic control unit replacement involves opening the brake lines and often programming and a special bleed procedure, so most owners leave that one to a shop with a factory-level tool.

Is it safe to drive a Ford Edge with the ABS light on?
If only the amber ABS light is on and the brakes feel normal, the base brakes still work, but you have no anti-lock or stability control help in a panic stop or on a slippery road. Drive gently, leave extra room, and get it scanned soon. If the red brake light is also on, have it inspected before driving.
Why are my ABS, traction control and AdvanceTrac lights all on at once?
All three systems use the same wheel speed sensor signals. When the ABS module sees a bad signal it shuts off anti-lock, traction control, and stability control together, so one sensor fault can light up the whole dash.
Can worn brake pads cause the ABS light?
Not directly. Worn pads lower the brake fluid level, which usually triggers the red brake warning light or a "Brake Fluid Level Low" message instead. Replace the pads before topping up fluid, or the reservoir will overflow when the pistons are pushed back.
My ABS light came on right after a brake job. What happened?
Most often a wheel speed sensor connector was left unplugged, the wire got pinched or stretched, or the sensor was damaged when the caliper or rotor came off. Check the harness at every wheel that was serviced.
Will disconnecting the battery clear the ABS light?
It may turn the light off for a moment, but if the fault is still there the module will set it again on the next drive. Fix the cause the code points to, then clear it with a scan tool.
