2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox Brake Fluid Type and Flush Interval

DOT 3 brake fluid for the 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox

By Core Brake Parts Tech Team — Circleville, OH warehouse

The 2010-2017 Chevrolet Equinox uses DOT 3 brake fluid. GM prints the spec on the master cylinder reservoir cap, and every owner's manual in this generation that we checked calls for DOT 3 from a clean, sealed container. For the flush interval, the 2016 Equinox owner's manual maintenance schedule says to replace brake fluid every five years, under both normal and severe service.

Below is what the fluid does in this SUV, how to tell when it is past due, what to use, and what to check while the system is open.

Brake Fluid Spec for the 2010-2017 Equinox

This is the second-generation Equinox, sold with the 2.4L four-cylinder and V6 engines. The brake fluid spec did not change across the run. GM's own wording in the manuals is consistent: the reservoir is filled with DOT 3 brake fluid "as indicated on the reservoir cap."

Item What GM specifies Where it comes from
Fluid type DOT 3 hydraulic brake fluid 2010, 2013, 2014 and 2016 owner's manuals
GM part number listed 19299818 (Canada 19299819) 2016 manual, Recommended Fluids and Lubricants
Replacement interval Every five years 2016 manual maintenance schedule, footnote on brake fluid
Brake system inspection Listed in the regular maintenance schedule 2016 manual
Container New fluid from a clean, sealed container only 2010 and 2016 manuals

The 2010 manual text we reviewed covers fluid type and level but does not state a time interval in that section. If you own an early model, check the maintenance schedule pages of your own manual. Five years is a sensible ceiling either way, because the reason for the interval, moisture absorption, is the same on every year.

Why DOT 3 Needs Replacing: Moisture and Boiling Point

DOT 3 is a glycol-based fluid, and glycol fluids absorb water from the air through hoses, seals and the reservoir vent. GM's manual puts it plainly: brake fluid absorbs water over time, and it should be replaced at the specified interval to prevent increased stopping distance.

The federal standard for brake fluid, FMVSS No. 116, shows why that matters. It sets two minimum boiling points for each grade: a "dry" figure for fresh fluid and a "wet" figure for fluid that has picked up moisture.

Grade Minimum dry boiling point Minimum wet boiling point
DOT 3 205 C (401 F) 140 C (284 F)
DOT 4 230 C (446 F) 155 C (311 F)
DOT 5 260 C (500 F) 180 C (356 F)

The gap between the dry and wet numbers is the whole story. As water content rises, the boiling point drops. On a long downhill grade, while towing, or in hard stop-and-go driving, heat from the pads soaks into the caliper. If the fluid boils, it forms vapor bubbles, vapor compresses, and the pedal goes soft or sinks. Water in the fluid also promotes internal corrosion in calipers, lines and the ABS unit.

Can You Use DOT 4 or DOT 5 in an Equinox?

Stick with what GM specifies. The 2016 manual warns that the wrong or contaminated brake fluid can damage the brake system and could lead to loss of braking.

  • DOT 5 (silicone base): Do not use it. FMVSS 116 classifies it separately as "DOT 5 SILICONE BASE," and it is a different chemistry from the glycol fluid this system was built around. It is also required to be dyed purple, which makes it easy to spot.
  • DOT 5.1 (non-silicone): Glycol based like DOT 3, but it is not what GM lists for this vehicle.
  • DOT 4: Also glycol based with higher minimum boiling points. GM lists DOT 3 for the Equinox; if you want to deviate from that, confirm with your dealer first.

The safe move for a daily-driven Equinox is the fluid printed on the cap: fresh DOT 3 from a sealed bottle. Opened bottles on a shelf start absorbing moisture, which is why GM calls for a sealed container.

Symptoms of Old or Low Brake Fluid

  • Soft or spongy pedal, especially after repeated hard stops or a long descent. That points to moisture-laden fluid or air in the lines.
  • Pedal that sinks or does not return to normal height. GM's manual says to see a dealer if the pedal does not return to normal height or if pedal travel increases rapidly.
  • BRAKE FLUID LOW message or brake warning light. The 2016 Equinox displays a BRAKE FLUID LOW message and turns on the brake system warning light when the level falls too far.
  • Dark fluid. Fresh DOT 3 is colorless to amber. Dark brown fluid has aged and is due for a flush, though color alone does not measure water content.
  • More than five years since the last flush, regardless of mileage.

Low Fluid Usually Means Worn Pads or a Leak, Not a Top-Off

GM makes a point many owners miss: there are only two reasons the fluid level drops. One is normal pad wear. As pads wear, the caliper pistons move outward and fluid moves from the reservoir into the calipers. When new pads go in, the pistons are pushed back and the level rises again. The other reason is a leak, which needs to be repaired, because topping off does not fix it.

That is why the manual says do not top off the brake fluid. If you fill a low reservoir on worn pads, it can overflow when new pads are installed. GM also warns that spilled fluid can burn on a hot engine and will damage paint, so wash off any spill right away.

If your level is low, look at your pads first. Front pads for this generation are here: 2010-2017 Equinox and Terrain front ceramic brake pads. You can also browse all brake pads and brake rotors. If you find a wet spot at a wheel or along a line, see our brake hoses and brake calipers.

How a Flush Is Done and What to Replace at the Same Time

A flush pushes new fluid through the master cylinder, lines, ABS unit and each caliper until clean fluid comes out of every bleeder. It is a moderate DIY job with a helper or a one-person bleeder kit. Some ABS systems need a scan tool to cycle the modulator valves during a full flush, so if the pedal is still soft after a conventional bleed, have a shop finish it.

  1. Clean the reservoir cap and the area around it before opening it, as GM directs, so dirt does not fall in.
  2. Remove most of the old fluid from the reservoir and refill with fresh DOT 3.
  3. Bleed each wheel in the order given in the factory service information until the fluid runs clear and bubble free.
  4. Never let the reservoir run dry during bleeding, or you will pull air into the system.
  5. Set the final level between the MIN and MAX marks and confirm a firm pedal before driving.

A brake job is the best time to flush, because the system is already open. While you are there, check pads and rotors, look for cracked or swollen rubber hoses, and make sure caliper slides move freely. Fresh brake hardware kits are worth installing with new pads.

Frequently Asked Questions

What brake fluid does a 2010-2017 Chevy Equinox take?

DOT 3. It is printed on the master cylinder reservoir cap and specified in the owner's manual for this generation. Use new fluid from a sealed container.

How often should I flush the brake fluid on my Equinox?

The 2016 Equinox maintenance schedule calls for replacing the brake fluid every five years. If you tow or drive in the mountains, doing it sooner is reasonable.

Should I top off the fluid if the reservoir is low?

No. GM says not to top off. A low level means worn pads or a leak. Inspect the pads and look for leaks, then set the level correctly after the repair.

Can I mix DOT 3 and DOT 4?

Both are glycol based, but GM specifies DOT 3 for this vehicle. The cleanest approach is to use only DOT 3 and, if the history of the fluid is unknown, flush it all out.

Does the GMC Terrain use the same fluid?

The Terrain shares this platform and its brake parts, including the front pads linked above. Check the reservoir cap on your Terrain to confirm the fluid grade before adding anything.
