A brake job on a 2010-2016 Hyundai Genesis Coupe starts with one question: does your car have the standard single-piston brakes or the factory Brembo package? The two systems share almost no pads or rotors, so identify yours first, then replace pads and rotors as an axle set when the rotors are worn, grooved or below minimum thickness. The fronts usually wear first, but on this rear-drive coupe the rears deserve a look every time the wheels come off.
Two different brake systems on one car
Hyundai built the Genesis Coupe with two distinct brake packages, and every parts decision follows from which one you have. According to Hyundai's own 2011 specifications, the standard system uses 12.6-inch ventilated front rotors with a 60mm single-piston floating caliper, and 12.4-inch solid rear rotors with a 43mm single-piston floating caliper. The Brembo system, fitted to the R-Spec and 3.8 Track models that year, uses 13.4-inch ventilated front rotors with four-piston fixed calipers and 13.0-inch ventilated rear rotors with four-piston fixed calipers (32mm plus 28mm pistons). All of the Brembo calipers are painted red from the factory.
| Item | Standard brakes | Brembo package |
|---|---|---|
| Front rotor | 12.6 in, ventilated | 13.4 in (340 x 28 mm), ventilated |
| Front caliper | Single 60mm piston, floating | Four-piston fixed (42mm + 42mm) |
| Rear rotor | 12.4 in, solid | 13.0 in (330 x 20 mm), ventilated |
| Rear caliper | Single 43mm piston, floating | Four-piston fixed (32mm + 28mm) |
| How to spot it | Painted or bare single-piston caliper behind the wheel | Red caliper with Brembo lettering |
The Brembo package was offered on more trims over the years. In the 2016 model year, Hyundai's features sheet lists the Brembo braking system as standard on the 3.8 R-Spec and 3.8 Ultimate, and not available on the 3.8 Base. Because Genesis Coupes are popular for modification, do not assume a used car still has the brakes it left the factory with: look through the wheel spokes before ordering anything. Brembo's own replacement catalog for the Genesis Coupe lists separate pad and disc part numbers for different brake sizes on the same car, which is why the brake package matters more than the year when you shop.
Every Genesis Coupe has four-wheel disc brakes with four-channel ABS, Electronic Brake-force Distribution and Brake Assist, plus stability and traction control, so there are no rear drums to service.
Symptoms that the brakes are due
- Squealing from the wear indicator. A high-pitched squeal that comes and goes with light braking is often the pad wear tab touching the rotor. That is your warning to plan the job soon.
- Grinding. Metal-on-metal noise means the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting the rotor. At that point the rotors need replacing, not just the pads.
- Pulsation in the pedal or steering wheel. Usually uneven rotor thickness or pad material deposits on the rotor. On a car that sees spirited driving or track days, heat is the usual cause.
- Pulling to one side. On the standard single-piston brakes, a sticking slide pin or caliper piston is a common reason. On the Brembo fixed calipers there are no slide pins, so suspect a sticking piston or a collapsed hose instead.
- Soft or long pedal. Air or moisture in the fluid, a leak, or pads worn thin. Fluid that is dark or old should be flushed.
- ABS or brake warning light. A low fluid level can trigger the brake light as pads wear. An ABS light needs a scan, and on this car you should also check the recall described below.
Which parts wear and in what order
Front pads carry most of the braking load and usually wear out first. The rear-drive layout and the stability control system, which brakes individual wheels, mean the rears still wear at a steady rate, so measure them at every front job instead of assuming they are fine.
Rotors should be measured with a micrometer against the minimum thickness cast into the rotor or listed in the factory service manual. On the standard brakes the rear rotors are solid discs, which have less mass to absorb heat than the ventilated fronts and can warp or groove if pads are run to the backing plate. On the Brembo cars, the large ventilated rotors at both ends are expensive to ignore: a set of pads worn to metal can ruin a rotor that would otherwise have lasted another pad set.
Shop by package: brake pads for the front and rear axles, low-dust ceramic brake pads for daily drivers, and replacement brake rotors in the correct diameter for your system.
What to replace at the same time
- Rotors, as a pair. If the rotors are grooved, below minimum thickness, or causing pulsation, replace both on the axle. Fresh pads on a worn rotor bed in poorly and can return with noise.
- Hardware. Abutment clips, anti-rattle springs and pad pins lose tension with heat. A brake hardware kit is inexpensive insurance against noise, especially on the standard floating calipers.
- Slide pins and boots (standard brakes). Clean and re-lubricate with high-temperature brake grease. A torn boot lets water in and leads to a seized pin and uneven pad wear.
- Brake fluid. Fluid absorbs moisture over time, which lowers its boiling point. Use the fluid type printed on the reservoir cap or in the owner's manual, and flush on the schedule Hyundai lists in the maintenance section.
- Calipers, if needed. A torn piston boot, a leak or a piston that will not retract means the caliper needs service or replacement. Replacement units are in our brake calipers collection.
How hard is the job?
On the standard brakes this is a straightforward job for a home mechanic with jack stands, a torque wrench and a C-clamp or piston tool: remove the caliper slide bolts, swing or lift the caliper, remove the bracket if the rotor is being replaced, and reassemble with clean hardware. Torque every fastener to the value in the factory service manual.
The Brembo fixed calipers are different. Pads usually come out after removing the retaining pins and spring, without unbolting the caliper, so a pad-only swap can be quicker than on the standard brakes. Pistons on both sides must be pushed back evenly, and rotor replacement means removing the caliper from the knuckle. Take care not to twist or stretch the brake hose while the caliper is off, and never let a caliper hang on the hose.
After any brake job, pump the pedal until it is firm before moving the car, then bed in the new pads with a series of moderate stops from speed so the pads transfer an even layer onto the rotors. Performance pads for the Brembo cars often need a more deliberate bedding procedure, so follow the pad maker's instructions.
What drives the cost
Price depends on four things. First, the brake package: Brembo pads and the larger two-axle rotor set cost more than the standard parts. Second, pads only versus pads and rotors: a pad-only service is the cheapest option but only works if the rotors measure within spec and run true. Third, one axle or both. Fourth, labor, if you pay a shop, plus extras such as a fluid flush, hardware or a caliper. Doing both axles at once saves time because the car is already in the air.
Check the ABS recall before you work on the brakes
NHTSA recall 23V-651 covers 51,789 model year 2011-2015 Genesis Coupes. Hyundai reported that the ABS module can leak brake fluid internally past a motor shaft O-ring and cause an electrical short, which raises the risk of an engine compartment fire while parked or driving. Warning signs listed in the report are smoke from the engine bay, a burning or melting odor, and a check engine or ABS light. The remedy is a lower-amperage ABS fuse installed by a Hyundai dealer at no cost, and Hyundai recommended parking outside and away from structures until the remedy is done. Run your VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup before you start any brake work.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if my Genesis Coupe has Brembo brakes?
Look through the wheel spokes. The Brembo calipers are red four-piston fixed units with Brembo lettering at both ends of the car. The standard brakes use single-piston floating calipers. Check the car itself rather than the trim name, since used cars are often modified.
Do Brembo and standard Genesis Coupe brakes use the same pads?
No. The calipers and rotor sizes are different, so pads and rotors are specific to each system. Order parts by brake package, not only by year.
Can I just replace the pads and keep the rotors?
Yes, if the rotors are above minimum thickness, free of deep grooves, and not causing pulsation. If they are worn or warped, replace them as a pair on that axle.
Does the Genesis Coupe have rear drum brakes?
No. Every 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe has four-wheel disc brakes. Standard cars use solid rear rotors and Brembo cars use ventilated rear rotors.
Does the ABS recall affect a brake job?
The recall remedy is an ABS fuse change done by a dealer, not a brake part, but a 2011-2015 car with an open recall should have it done. An ABS light or burning smell is a reason to stop and get it inspected.
