Most brake noise on a 2009 Lexus LS460 comes from one of three things: a front pad worn down to its wear indicator (a high squeal), metal-on-metal contact once the pad is gone (grinding), or uneven rotor surfaces that you feel as a pulsing pedal or steering wheel under light braking at highway speed. Lexus published a service bulletin for exactly that last complaint on 2007 to 2015 LS460 sedans, and the repair it calls for tells you a lot about how to fix this car properly.
How the Front Brakes Work on a 2009 LS460
The 2009 LS460 is the standard-brake car. Lexus did not offer the Brembo-equipped Sport Package until the 2010 model year, when it announced the package alongside the revised LS460 in October 2009. So unless your car has been converted, a 2009 LS460 runs the factory Lexus front calipers, not the Brembo Sport setup.
Lexus service bulletin L-SB-0036-15 lists the specifications for the standard 2WD LS460 front brakes, and they are the numbers you want in front of you when you diagnose noise:
| Item | Standard | Minimum |
|---|---|---|
| Front rotor diameter | 13.14 in | - |
| Front rotor thickness | 30.0 mm (1.181 in) | 27.0 mm (1.063 in) |
| Front pad thickness | 13.5 mm (0.532 in) | 1.0 mm (0.039 in) |
| Wheel lug nut torque | 140 N-m (103 ft-lbf), star pattern | Torque wrench only, no impact gun |
The caliper uses slide pins, M-shaped anti-rattle springs, a pad wear indicator retainer and a separate anti-rattle spring. Every one of those small parts has a job in keeping the pads quiet and square to the rotor, which is why the hardware matters as much as the pads.
Squeal: What It Usually Means
A steady high-pitched squeal that shows up during light braking, or even while driving and goes away with the pedal pressed, is usually the wear indicator touching the rotor. Pull a wheel and measure the pad. New is 13.5 mm; if you are close to the bottom, the pads are due.
If the pads are thick and the car still squeals, the noise is almost always vibration. Wagner's brake noise guidance says brake noise generally comes from rust, distorted or loose components, or worn and weakened original parts. On an LS460 the usual suspects are:
- Tired anti-rattle springs and clips. Wagner notes these lose their spring tempering from brake heat. A spring that no longer holds the pad firmly lets it chatter against the rotor.
- Corroded slide pins. A dragging pin holds the pad against the rotor unevenly, which causes noise and uneven wear.
- Rust on the pad contact points. Rust on the caliper abutments and piston face lets the pad sit crooked.
- Missing or wrong lubricant. Pads with bonded shims need the correct lubricant only where the pad maker specifies it. Some shim designs must stay dry.
- Glazed or poorly bedded pads. New pads that were never broken in properly can squeal until the pad and rotor surfaces match.
A note for owners who swapped in Brembo Sport calipers: the Lexus bulletin for 2010 to 2013 Sport Package cars (L-SB-0008-12) states that some squeal at low speed is an inherent characteristic of those high-performance pads. Lexus released an updated front pad kit, and it warns not to separate the bonded anti-squeal shims from the pads.
Grinding: Stop Driving on It
Grinding means metal is touching metal. Either the friction material is gone and the backing plate is cutting the rotor, or debris such as a stone or rust flake is trapped between the rotor and the caliper or dust shield. Debris usually makes a scraping noise that comes and goes. Worn-out pads grind on every stop and get worse.
Once a pad backing plate has touched the rotor, the rotor is usually scored too deeply to resurface without going under the 27.0 mm minimum. At that point it is a pad and rotor job. Grinding also heats the caliper and can damage the piston boot, so inspect the caliper while you are in there.
Pulsation: The Lexus Bulletin Fix
Lexus bulletin L-SB-0036-15 (revised December 2015) covers some 2007 to 2015 2WD LS460 standard models (not F Sport, not AWD) and LS460L vehicles with vibration or pulsation in the brake pedal or steering wheel when braking lightly at 65 to 75 mph. That describes a 2009 LS460 with factory brakes. The repair procedure is:
- Road test to confirm the vibration at highway speed under low brake pressure.
- Measure the front rotors. Below spec, replace them; within spec, resurface them smooth on an on-car lathe.
- Measure the pads and replace them if they are out of spec or show abnormal surface wear or streak marks.
- Install an additional M-spring (anti-rattle spring) so the caliper has springs on both the leading and trailing slide pins.
- Torque the lug nuts to 140 N-m (103 ft-lbf) with a torque wrench in a star pattern. Lexus specifically says not to use an impact gun.
That last step matters. Uneven lug torque can distort the rotor against the hub, and the rotor then wears unevenly. Power Stop explains that pulsation is usually not a heat-warped rotor but uneven pad material deposited on the rotor, and that only about 0.0007 inch of buildup is enough to feel. Holding the brake hard at a stop after hot braking can imprint pad material onto the rotor and start the same cycle.
So a lasting fix on this car is fresh or resurfaced rotors, pads with a clean surface, the dual M-spring hardware, clean hub faces, correct lug torque, and a proper bed-in.
Parts to Replace Together and How Hard the Job Is
For squeal or grinding with worn pads, replace pads and rotors as a set on the axle. Our brake rotors and ceramic brake pads collections are the place to start, and ceramic pads are generally the quieter, lower-dust choice for a luxury sedan like the LS. Add a brake hardware kit so the anti-rattle springs, clips and pin boots are new; reusing heat-tired springs is one of the most common reasons a fresh brake job comes back noisy.
If a slide pin is seized or a piston boot is torn, a replacement from our brake calipers collection is usually a better fix than fighting a corroded caliper.
The job itself is a moderate DIY for someone with a torque wrench and basic tools. The LS is heavy, so use proper jack stands, not the jack alone. Clean the hub face down to bare metal before the rotor goes on, lubricate only where the pad maker says to, and set every caliper fastener to the factory service manual value. Then bed the pads. Wagner's procedure is 20 slow-downs from 50 mph to 20 mph with light pressure, about 30 seconds apart. Power Stop recommends a series of firmer stops followed by a cool-down drive. Follow the instructions that come with your pads, and avoid holding the brake hard at a stop right after bedding.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do my LS460 brakes pulse only at highway speed?
At 65 to 75 mph the rotor spins fast enough that small thickness variations or pad deposits turn into a pulse you can feel. Lexus bulletin L-SB-0036-15 covers exactly this on 2007 to 2015 LS460 models and fixes it with rotor resurfacing or replacement, pad inspection, and an added anti-rattle spring.
Can I resurface my 2009 LS460 front rotors?
Only if they stay above the 27.0 mm minimum thickness after machining. New rotors are 30.0 mm thick. If the rotor is already close to the minimum or deeply scored from grinding, replace it.
Do Brembo Sport pads fit a 2009 LS460?
Not a factory 2009 car. The Brembo Sport Package started with the 2010 model year, and its pads fit the Brembo caliper. A 2009 LS460 takes pads for the standard front caliper, so match pads to your caliper, not just the model name.
Are squeaky brakes on an LS460 dangerous?
A light squeal from dry hardware is annoying but not an emergency. A squeal from the wear indicator means the pads are near the end, and grinding means they are gone. Check pad thickness as soon as you hear either.
Why did my brakes squeal again after a pad change?
The usual causes are reused anti-rattle springs, a sticking slide pin, rust left on the hub or caliper contact points, lubricant in the wrong place, or pads that were never bedded in. Replace the hardware and bed the pads properly.
