On a 2009 Cadillac CTS-V, an ABS light is most often caused by a wheel speed sensor that has lost its signal, and GM's own diagnostic bulletin says the usual reason is metal debris stuck to the magnetic encoder ring on the wheel bearing, not a failed sensor. Read the code first, clean the encoder ring at the corner it points to, and only then buy parts. Your normal brakes still work with the ABS light on, but anti-lock, traction control and StabiliTrak may not.
How the ABS System Works on the 2009 CTS-V
Cadillac lists the 2009 CTS-V brake system as four-wheel disc with four-channel ABS, hydraulic brake assist and dynamic rear brake proportioning. StabiliTrak (four-channel, four mode), traction control and engine drag control were standard. Every one of those systems depends on the same four wheel speed signals, which is why one bad signal usually lights the ABS, Service Traction and Service StabiliTrak messages together.
The foundation brakes are Brembo: aluminum six-piston calipers in front and aluminum four-piston calipers in the rear, clamping vented rotors (Cadillac's published figures are 380 mm by 32 mm front and 373 mm by 28 mm rear). The car makes 550 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2L V-8, so the ABS and stability electronics are working hard every time you brake from speed.
The wheel speed sensors are active Hall-type sensors. Bosch, a major sensor supplier, explains that this type reads a rotating multipole magnetic ring without contact and sends the control module a square-wave current signal whose frequency rises with wheel speed. On GM cars of this era the magnetic ring is a brown magnetized rubber ring built into the inboard side of the wheel bearing hub, and GM notes the digital signal switches between about 7 mA and 14 mA. If anything disturbs that magnetic pattern, the module sees a wheel that is suddenly slowing or stopping when it is not, and it shuts the system down and turns on the light.
Symptoms and What They Tell You
- ABS light plus Service Traction / Service StabiliTrak message: the classic wheel speed sensor signal fault. The electronic control brake module (EBCM) has disabled the systems that rely on wheel speed.
- Brief click, ratchet or grind noise, or the ABS pump running, at parking-lot speeds: GM ties this to debris on the encoder ring making the module think a wheel is locking, so it cycles the ABS when it should not.
- Traction or StabiliTrak light flashing at low speed with no code stored: GM lists this as another debris symptom. The fault is intermittent and may not set a code.
- Red BRAKE warning light on as well: treat this differently. Cadillac's owner manual says the brake system might not be working properly when that light is on, and if it stays on after you pull over, the car should be towed for service. Check the brake fluid level and look for leaks before driving further.
Common Causes, in the Order to Check Them
| Cause | How it shows up | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Metal debris on the encoder ring | Code C0035, C0040, C0045 or C0050; noise or false ABS activation at low speed | Clean the ring with a dry nylon brush, then mild soap if needed |
| Damaged sensor wiring or connector | Code comes and goes over bumps or in the wet | Repair the harness or connector at that corner |
| Failed wheel speed sensor | Code returns after cleaning; no signal at all from that corner | Replace the sensor |
| Damaged encoder ring or worn hub bearing | Code returns, bearing noise or play, ring torn or scored | Replace the hub bearing assembly |
| Low brake fluid or hydraulic fault | Red BRAKE light, soft pedal | Find the leak, inspect pads, lines and hoses |
GM's preliminary information bulletin PIC5428F covers 2008-2014 Cadillac CTS and CTS-V for exactly this complaint. It maps the codes to corners: C0035 left front, C0040 right front, C0045 left rear and C0050 right rear, specifically with symptom bytes 18, 5A or 0F. GM's own wording is that most repairs can be done without replacing the bearing hub or the wheel speed sensor.
Where does the debris come from? Brake work is a common source. Machining or grinding near the hub, cutting off rusty hardware, or simply years of rotor and pad wear leave ferrous particles that the magnetic ring collects like a magnet collects filings.
The Fix: Cleaning the Encoder Ring Step by Step
- Scan for codes. A basic code reader often only sees engine codes. You need a scan tool that reads the EBCM (ABS module) to get the C-code and the corner.
- Go to that corner only. Lift the car safely, remove the wheel and look at the inboard side of the hub where the sensor tip sits. On some applications the hub bearing has to come off to reach the ring properly; the service manual procedure for your corner tells you if that is needed.
- Brush, do not scrape. GM specifies a dry nylon soft-bristle brush. If debris remains, wash the ring with a mild soap and wipe it dry.
- Never use a magnet. GM warns that a magnetic pickup tool can damage the encoder, and to take care not to damage the bearing's outer seal while cleaning.
- Clear the codes and road test. Clear the DTCs with the scan tool and confirm the light stays off through a drive that includes a few low-speed stops.
If the same code comes back after a proper cleaning, check the sensor wiring for chafing against suspension parts, then test the sensor. A torn or cracked encoder ring means the hub bearing assembly has to be replaced, because the ring is part of it.
What to Replace at the Same Time
If you already have the wheel off, or the hub out, it is the right moment to look at the rest of the corner. The large Brembo rotors on this car are expensive to ignore: measure them against the minimum thickness stamped on the rotor and check pad material. When you replace rotors, clean the hub face and encoder area before the new rotor goes on so you do not trap fresh debris.
- Rear rotors: this Hawk Talon drilled and slotted rear rotor set for the 2009 CTS-V with Brembo calipers fits the four-piston rear setup.
- Pads for either axle: browse performance and daily brake pads and match the pad to the Brembo caliper on each axle.
- Rotors for the front: see our brake rotor selection.
- If the red BRAKE light came on too: inspect and replace any seeping flexible brake hoses, and flush old fluid using the fluid type printed on the reservoir cap or in the owner's manual.
How Hard Is This Job?
Reading the code needs an ABS-capable scan tool; that is the only special equipment. Cleaning a front encoder ring with the ring visible is an easy driveway job. GM's warranty labor table in the bulletin rates the rear on rear-drive CTS models as longer than the front, because the rear hub is more involved to get at. Replacing a hub bearing is a moderate job that calls for the factory torque values from the service manual for the hub bolts, axle nut and caliper bracket; do not guess those on a 4,200-plus-pound, 550-horsepower car. If you are not comfortable torquing Brembo caliper brackets and hub hardware to spec, have a shop do the hub while you save on the diagnosis by pulling the code yourself.
One more thing to know: an ABS light alone does not mean you have lost your brakes. The base hydraulic system still stops the car. What you lose is anti-lock control, traction control and stability control, which matter most in rain, snow and hard emergency stops. Fix it promptly.

Is it safe to drive a 2009 CTS-V with the ABS light on?
The normal brakes still work, but anti-lock, traction and stability control are usually disabled, so the car can lock wheels or slide in a hard stop or on a wet road. Drive gently and get it diagnosed soon. If the red BRAKE light is also on, do not drive it; have it inspected or towed.
Which wheel does code C0045 point to?
GM's bulletin lists C0045 as the left rear corner. C0035 is left front, C0040 is right front and C0050 is right rear.
Do I need a new wheel speed sensor?
Not necessarily. GM states that most of these faults are fixed by cleaning debris off the magnetic encoder ring without replacing the sensor or the hub. Clean it first, clear the code and road test before buying parts.
Can new brake pads or rotors cause the ABS light?
They can if debris from the job lands on the encoder ring, or if a sensor wire gets stretched or pinched during the work. Keep the hub area clean and route the sensor harness back into its original clips.
Why did my Service StabiliTrak message come on with the ABS light?
StabiliTrak and traction control use the same wheel speed signals as the ABS. When the module loses one of those signals, it turns off all the systems that depend on it and shows every related message.
